Merriam-Webster’s Vocabulary Builder - Perfect for prepping for SAT, ACT, TOEFL, & TOEIC

This book has thoughtfully separated vocabulary words into related batches (independently sectioned into chapters). Each chapter has meaningful subsections, with short quizzes at the end to reinforce reading. The end of the chapter then has a review, very useful in triggering the realization you have not yet mastered certain words, giving you insight into which words you may want to emphasize (if you are interested in really expanding your vocabulary). My favorite part of each word entry is the background paragraphs that not only give context, but are also well written. The author's tone and frame of mind come forward, you can really imagine an instructor there with you as you learn these words, really trying to help you understand their meaning and encouraging you to think forward to their future use in your day to day life.

I am on a journey of self improvement and being more eloquent is one of my goal for 2026. The vocabulary builder is designed to introduce new words to your vocabulary as well as how to use them. So far I have been introduced to some new words and there is a comprehension to assess if you understood the words and an answer sheet at the back of the book. Issue 1: I wish the book had part of speech similar to dictionary. This can be deduced from reading the examples but I still wish it was there from the beginning. Issue 2: if your vocabulary is already extensive, this may not be the book for you since alot of the words may already be in your everyday vocabulary.

It is another wonderful vocabulary book by Webster Merriam. I dont know if its just me, but I am really impressed by and enamored with this vocabulary builder and I really enjoy reading it. Its organized and presented in a very fascinating way that once you start reading it you don't want to stop. It turned the tedious, boring and yet unyielding process of memorizing words into a highly productive and yet fun and enjoyable one. To be more specific, the Latin or Greek roots help to “dig the root up” so that you start having a rough and basic idea of the meaning of the following words that consist of the particular root in one way or another. The definition given is brief but always to the point. The sample sentence that follows immediately throw the word into the context where it may appear while the paragraph right below the sentence help learners with the collocation and usage. The quizzes are really conducive to testing your understanding and marking your progress. I had finished one UNIT per day and I felt amazingly inspired and confident in this interesting path of learning. I took out one star because the book is tiny which is easy to carry around but the words are too small not good for eyes. Anyway,Its still a wonderful book. Highly Recommend!
