Breakthrough Rapid Reading
Its crazy but the book is working better than I had expected. With the first lesson I have increased my reading 30% and my retention and understanding of it is much better as well. I am reading through new material (fiction) much faster and with better clarity in the first few lessons. I am kicking myself as I wanted to learn how to read faster for years and I put it off. I can not imagine all the extra time spent struggling to get through things that I was reading slowly. I am very much enjoying this book and with each lesson I seem to be improving in some fashion. It has also help my studies (anatomy and physiology) as well yet due to the vocabulary it has, my speed in this subject has not increased as much as it has for fiction. The book addressed this in the last lesson I did and its just that the limit of a persons vocabulary will also limit speed for a time. Once the understanding of the words comes then the speed will increase along with it.I do the practice drills in the book and I am putting for the effort to read more when not drilling. Just like anything else, you will get what you put into this. Book is very easy to read as its straight and to the point without any "fluff". Lessons are fairly short but you will repeat them a few times. The main concept as I understand it is to use your finger as a pacer for which your eyes can follow. Works just find for books in print yet reading on a computer that way is not as comfortable. I would imaging doing that on a tablet would be near impossible. Now do not be fooled as the book does not just say use your finger and you will read faster. It explains everything in detail as to why the finger pacer works and logically it makes complete sense to me.I recommend this book to anyone as it really has helped me and did it FAST. If someone gets this book and does not improve I will promise you it is because they did not give it a fair chance! Its worth the purchase and will pay big returns in the end!

An Excellent Home-Study Course
This is probably the best book that I've read on speed reading. In an earlier review, I suggested that Zorn's book, "Speed Reading," was the best. It is indeed a fine book. Kump's book, however, give a more realistic idea of the kind of work it takes to boost your reading speed. Other books give a smattering of exercises--often very good ones--without emphasizing the kind of practice that is necessary, or even that you won't necessarily be able to maintain high speeds across all types of reading material.Kump uses familiar reading exercises, and variations on them. The lessons are brief, and each lesson contains short (10-15 minutes) exercises; at the end of each lesson, you are instructed to do a series of drills. Kump wants you to spend about a week on each series of drills, and to repeat them every day. They can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour or more a day, depending on how much time you are willing to spend. I've found most--but not all--drills useful. The ones that were not useful to me drilled on skills I already had (recognizing levels of specificity within paragraphs, for instance). Here's an example of one particularly useful drill. Kump has you read for 2 minutes, as fast as you can with comprehension. Then you read the same material again, trying to read a little faster, and a little further, in the same amount of time. And again. You do this four times. A variation of this is to read for 1 minute, then a little faster for another minute, and then to "practice read" (i.e., move your eyes quickly across the words, without worrying about comprehension) twice the longest passage in the same amount of time. Then you practice read three times the original (that is, the longest of the first two 1-minute drills) in one minute. One REALLY nice thing about this book is that Kump has you use your own reading material, your own books. Other books include selections for you to practice with, most of which are tedious, simplistic, or just too brief. Kump's exercises work, and you can read your own books while you practice.

Like all good things, this too comes with time.
I've been using a speed reading program for several years now and I'd read Buzan's Study Skills: Mind Maps, Memory Techniques, Speed Reading and More! (Mind Set) and The Speed Reading Book (Mind Set) . Both were borrowed from my colleges library. All these things have helped me dramatically since I'd have had reading issues. But nothing out of the ordinary, well not for sustained periods of time. I did use a fair bit of the information given but the bigger Speed reading book didn't provide much practical advice as far as I was concerned. Nothing that I found pragmatic anyway. With breakthrough reading however, I've been keeping up at a fairly good pace without much procrastination in between and I've been following the exercises to the dot without any skipping or dithering. I have seen some noticeable improvement in reading. And I mean in daily use, like reading a paper at work or other routine stuff. I wouldn't say it's dramatic, but it's not undramatic either. It's noticeable. It's somewhat satisfying and definable progress which I can feel is working. Even though I haven't been properly reading something for pleasure or otherwise at the moment. It's usually websites or at the moment, articles for my thesis. This book isn't a magic bullet, nor does it promise to be. But it has been delivering to my satisfaction and with constant use and practice I'm sure I will get to astonishing speed. On a side note it has helped me improve my utility of my speed reading program. Buzan's Study Skills: Mind Maps, Memory Techniques, Speed Reading and More! (Mind Set)The Speed Reading Book (Mind Set)
