Shure SM58 Pro Dynamic Vocal Microphone with 25-ft XLR Cable | Cardioid dynamic vocal mic for studio, live performance, podcasting and recording; includes 25-ft XLR cable

I bought this microphone to record audiobooks and podcasts. I also have a cheap USB mic, so this was my first foray into professional equipment. I plug it into my Behringer U-PHORIA UM2 Audiophile 2x2 USB Audio Interface with XENYX Mic Preamplifier and get the signal into my laptop via a USB cable. The difference between my new Shure mic and my old USB mic is like night and day. I have a naturally flat voice, and the SM58 gives it more volume and substance. With additional post-recording processing in Audacity my voice sounds almost professional :)I am impressed by the ability of the SM58 to reject outside noise and concentrate on my voice. I place it close to my mouth (about 2 inches away) at an angle so it won't pick up the plosives. I used to hide in my walk-in closet for recordings, but now I don't have to do that. I can simply sit in my room on a comfortable chair and record. I can't comment on the durability since I've only owned it for less than a month, but the overall impression is this: it's sturdy, heavy, and made of metal. Yes, it's more expensive than the cheap USB microphones, but you can't really compare. I think it's totally worth the price. I'm an instant fan. Great job, Shure!

Troubling experience with the last SM58 microphone (Mic head loose, no holder, insert, box was taped)Review/Opinion:Based on a coworker's opinion and my own research, I found this microphone and gave it a try for my instrument recordings. Being a third of what my coworker paid for his mic, not the SM58, is what attracted me in the beginning. I was looking at a SM57 initially until I found information stating that the SM58 could be a better device for saxophone recordings. I found a site that tested various microphones to see how the SM58 sounds. Based on that intel, affordability, and what my coworker thought about those tests, I jumped into the pool of microphone setup and purchased this mic with the XLR cable combo. I have been very happy with the recordings, both in a partial acoustic foamed environment and a fully foamed environment. Obviously, the fully foamed environment recordings are more clear and distinct. For both locations though, at an arm's length away, no clipping or distortion was experienced.The second microphone I purchased from a 3rd party:I have a similarly bad experience with an audio interface purchased through a 3rd party. i strongly suggest going through the mfr if possible. So he package was taped up, holder and insert missing, however, luckily, the XLR cable and microphone were still there! I did a mini-check on the cable and mic, which both seemed to be fine. I found later that the microphone head was loose!?! This microphone was in heavy bubble wrap when it came and the box was not damaged, but had two pieces of large white button-tape affixed. So far, this microphone has not been an issue for recording the sax and hopefully it will not be an issue in the future.Setup:The mic has an XLR port and hooks directly up to an XLR cable. In my setup, the XLR cable hooks into the audio interface, MXV2U which is power by the laptop/computer through a usb-c cable supplied by Shure's MXV2U. I am using Audacity as a DAW on a lightweight Linux OS. No issues have been experienced during my ~10 - 20 recordings.Ease of Use:Its a microphone with an XLR port. Hook it up, set it up where you need it, make sure it registers on the recording software, make some noise on a test recording, play it back and adjust the software where you want it. done. lol. As a note, I have experienced no issues with either mic, both sound great for my needs.Overall experience:This microphone MIGHT be a bit soft when it comes to speaking during sessions-- I have not experimented enough with placement yet. Research tends toward the mic being 6" to 12" away at max for normal voice recording, since I am more interested in the tonal quality of the instrument, but my voice does comes in a close second as i can learn from previous perceptions, mistakes, habits, or etc from any spoken portion or outburst, lol. Usually, the mic is about an arm's length away, which is a greater distance than recommendations. This can be corrected by either better placement or louder speech though.I suggest using the MFR, if possible, for any purchases due to experiences with one of these mics and one of the MXV2U audio interfaces have issues. The connectivity cannot be simpler, hook up the XLR cable, the sensitivity of the mic seems great, at least to my ear, it seems to pick up the instrument's sounds cleanly, it is affordable compared to other options, and I am happy overall with the purchase regardless of the oversight? of the 3rd party. Yep, five stars.

Lives up to its name. Use this for my YouTube channel audio recording, and it sounds great. Genuinely blown away by the audio quality and ease of setup and use. Connects via xlr, but you can also pair this thing with a xlr to usb c adaptor which makes this a low power mic on the go for laptops.

I think this is a superb microphone and unfortunately, though I have all the microphones and this is more of an impulse by, but I will highly recommend recommended to anybody

I am going to give this microphone a solid five star rating. Here’s why first it does not color your voice. It doesn’t pick up what’s around you and it also can stand impact very well. One downside though is you have to add it to an audio interface or another speaker set up due to the fact that it is a dynamic mic, which isn’t a microphone I just used for it volume

The Shure SM58 is absolutely legendary for a reason. The sound quality is incredibly clear and warm, and it does an amazing job of isolating vocals while rejecting background noise. Amazing microphone for such a price. Got it on a lightning deal for 6.7k which is a steal. I really appreciate Amazon for selling it at such a price. I had been waiting on the edge to buy it, but didn't really see any advantage to getting a dynamic mic as I already owned AT2020 and MXL990 and 991. But these are condenser microphones and they really need a lot of acoustic treatment for the room. This mic SM58 on the other hand absolutely sounds phenomenal and we don't need to worry about the room acoustics because it rejects everything else and only picks up the sound from in front of the mic.Pros:1. Obviously it's legendary build quality. I didn't think it would be 300gm! It's like a tank. You can hammer nails with this.2. Beautifully tuned for vocals and other woodwind instruments (I play the flute and it records it brilliantly) Almost all artists use this live and it gives the flute a nice natural sound. A condenser microphone actually needs you to be more precise in your breathing and even picks up the small noises while playing. But this microphone rejects all that and only picks up the direct sound. I'm amazed at how well this mic has been designed in a cardioid pickup pattern. I usually have trouble extending the bass flute sounds, but with this mic, it actually accentuates the bass flute sound!3. It has warm and rich bass sound.4. Almost all classical live performances and a lot of the bollywood songs are recorded on this mic. The sound signature of this mic is familiar to everyone and hence it sounds so good.Cons:1. It needs a lot of gain to get a usable signal. And if you don't have a powerful and good quality amp, it'll introduce noise (although you could reduce it in post production). On a scarlett 2i2, this thing needs 75% gain and it is sufficiently loud without any self noise. On a Zoom H5 recorder, it gets by at level 5.5 to 6 gain. So zoom recorder's amps are a little more powerful I believe. I believe this high gain requirement was because it was designed in the late 60s where the equipment was all analog and needed a lot of voltage for the sound mixing boards to work with.What you get in the box1. Mic (duh!)2. Mic stand adapter (I thought there was a 3/8th inch adapter but I didn't see it in my box. May be Indian version doesn't have it)3. Faux leather zippered pouch4. Cable tie5. StickersThe microphone has a "Shure - Distributed in India" hologram plastered on it's body. I had made the mistake of peeling it (as I thought it ruined the look of the microphone!) and as soon as I peeled it, the sticker left out a residue in letters saying "void void void". So I think I just voided my warranty! So DO NOT remove the hologram sticker. I believe I got the original and not fake microphone. It had all the signs of an original Shure mic.Overall I'm extremely satisfied with the product. I don't think I'll ever be needing my Condenser microphones with such an amazing and well built dynamic mic is available.Note: People who want to run it off their PC or Mac.Don't! .... Get an audio interface as this mic needs good pre-amplification.
