Product Description The entire first series of Channel 4's controversial drama is collected together on two videos. Stuart Jones (Aidan Gillen) and Vince Tyler (Craig Kelly) are gay friends living in Manchester. Both 29 years of age, they are beginning to question the direction their lives are taking when they meet wild 15-year-old Nathan Maloney (Charlie Hunnam), who shakes up their world with his arrival on the scene. desertcart.co.uk Review Television has become so much a part of our lives that it rarely surprises us anymore, so when a series like Queer as Folk comes along--truly shocking and genuinely touching--it's an event to be remembered. Originally broadcast as eight half-hour episodes on Channel 4, QAF follows the lives of three men through life, love and all the travails of such in Manchester. That the protagonists are all gay--and Nathan (Charlie Hunnam) is just 15 years old--is treated as matter of course, and were it not for the fact that every character who is introduced is so vividly realised, it would be the only point. The ultimate triumph of QAF is not that the explicit, explosive subject matter is handled (mostly) tastefully, or that it made it on screen at all--it's that the characters are so intriguing that the unflinching looks at sex and relationships almost fade completely into the background. The series certainly starts with a bang: in the first episode, young Nathan is deflowered, Stuart (Aiden Gillen) becomes a father and Vince (Craig Kelly) pines away with an unrequited love that quickly establishes itself as the series' main theme. (That Vince spends half of QAF with a boyfriend complicates the situation some.) Nathan has already come to terms with his sexuality by the time the series starts, but that doens't mean that the rest of his family--or his fellow students--have; Stuart, the biggest (or, at least, busiest) stud in town, and QAF's approaches 30 and starts to re-examine his life; and Vince has to live with the rest of them. The parents, families, friends and co-workers of all involved get plenty of screen time, and occasionally steal the scenes themselves--especially Denise Black (hairdresser Denise Osbourne from Coronation Street). The DVD includes a Photo Gallery and a handful of interviews, which add little to the package. --Randy Silver Review: massive improvement on prior QAF DVD release versions - 5 reasons why this 2006 "Definitive Collectors Edition" Queer As Folk is a vast improvement on the original DVD release versions and a necessary purchase for anyone who appreciates that this series was a landmark event in gay visibility, as well as one of the most compelling and engaging drama series ever produced. Reason #1: The original DVD of Series 2 was 16:9 anamorphic (as was stated on the cover), however the original DVD's of Series 1 were not 16:9 anamorphic, but the noticeably inferior 4:3 letterboxed - which not only meant that you were getting 25% less detail, but that the DVD's would not automatically display in the correct ratio on some widescreen systems (e.g. my LG portable cannot display it correctly at all). The 2006 version is true 16:9 anamorphic for both series. Reason #2: The originals had no commentary, but the 2006 version has relevant commentary for every episode - and for some of the extras - which is both entertaining and historically vital. Reason #3: All of the extras from the original DVD versions, plus a couple more, are here on the 4th disc - leaving space for maximum video quality for the series episodes on the other 3 discs. Reason #4: The 2006 version includes a superb 32 page "introductory book" with text by Russell T Davies complemented by lovely photos, and the scenes are clearly indexed where you first unfold the case. Each of the original DVD series only included a single slip with a scene index. Reason #5: The packaging is ultimately practical and stylish - including the label designs for the discs. The only improvement would have been to mention somewhere what each disc contains (which is Disc 1: Series 1 parts 1-4, Disc 2: Series 1 parts 5-8, Disc 3: Series 2 which is a 2 parter, Disc 4: all of the extra deleted scenes, documentaries, interviews, etc.) Review: queer as folk - brilliant series by c4, showing real life gay people ,except too much drugs in it, at least 95 % or more do not use drugs at all. also too much camp in it . a lot of gays are camp but as usual with tv and films ( all gays are queens ) . for every gay queen you see or now, there are at least 5 or more gays you don't know or suspect. the young boy was a scandal for the public but again it is somewhat true to life. there are many young gays that know they are gay but are too scared to tell parents or friends because of the nasty reactions a lot of them get also ieads to anyone older than them, even by a year is labelled a paedophile. I was surprised to notice JASON MERRELLS in it ( DECLAN from EMMERDALE ) who plays PHIL who dies early on of a drug overdose, but there are many more so called straight people who die of drugs overdose. and ANTONY COTTON in it from CORONATION STREET. but he played the stereo type gay who is a "screaming queen" as most people think of the normal gay person. That is why i liked BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN where the 2 main characters were shown as normal guys in life, not the queens usually portrayed in the media.

Fantastic Series - both 1 & 2 are a must watch
Can highly recommend both the first and second series of Queer As Folk. I've just bought both series on DVD as I first bought it, many years ago after watching it on tv, on video tape!! So as it's been many years seen I watched the series due to no video player I decided it was time to replace by videos and have a Queer As Folk series fest in the next few weekends. The music in both series it brilliant and I'm totally amazed it's not had a rerun on tv. Great actors, some of which have gone on to do greater things. If cheeky banter, great music, brilliant storyline and a bit of steamy sex is your thing then you won't be disappointed.

Simply a Must
This is really a must, you have no excuse why you have not seen it yet. So: If you are gay you probably have it already. If you don't just get one asap. You will wonder why on Earth you did not buy it earlier and ask for more. Fortunately, there is one more season waiting for you and the US version as well. If you aren't gay the best solution is to order it as a gift for a gay friend (if you think you haven't got any gay friends you probably have been lying to yourself since you turned 15 or some of your friends have been lying to you which is even worse but this series may help you understand why and change your ways) and have a sneak preview for one. A word of warning! You may want to keep it afterwards but don't worry. Your gay friend most probably has it already anyway.

Original British edition of this iconic queer drama series. Edgier than the later America version, with beautiful acting. Interesting to compare the two versions and reflect on Transatlantic cultural differences.

Assolutamente consigliato.

Die weltberühmte Serie auf DVD

This DVD contains the first series - 4 hours on two discs - of *Queer as Folk* as it was originally seen on television in the U.K. I hesitated for awhile, wondering whether it was worth the rather steep price for two discs. (Actually, I didn't know how many discs there were -- search as you might, I dare you to find that information here). Plus, I wasn't crazy about the what I saw of the U.S. version. Finally, I'm always scared by films and television from the U.K. because the regional accents are often indecipherable to my Yankee ear. Anyway, I bought it and I'm glad I did. First, I had no problem with the accents or the regional idioms. All the "shagging" and "wanking" wore off on me a bit, actually. ("Do you think ov'im when you av'a wank? No? Then ee's your Boyfriend alright.") The teleplay is flawless. Other reviewers are better at synopsis than I am. The point is, it's how the story's told that really sells this. The ensemble cast, led by Aiden Gillen, Craig Kelly, and Charlie Hunnam is terrific. Where the U.S. show had guys who really looked good but weren't very interesting, this show has more or less normal, but still good looking guys who look better and better as you get to know them. As Stuart, Aiden Gillen, for example, plays a character who "doesn't even have to work for it." But it's not so much that he's a god, physically, it's rather his attitude, which is so much more complicated than the voracious party boy he pretends to be. Craig Kelly broke my heart as Vince, Stuart's best friend, who apparently has been smitten by Stuart since they were both 12. And Charlie Hunnam swipes every scene he's in as Nathan, the 15 year old who starts out as a victim-waiting-to-happen, and ends up a hero, both to himself and to his adopted community. The setting is realistic too: straight people who run the gamut from insane homophobes to fellow-travelers; and gay people who have carved for themselves a community, but who have also found out that the world isn't "Will and Grace" and liberation is an inside job. This show never panders to those who want easy or politically correct answers, or who want everything to be tied up nicely in a bow. Instead, it overflows with insight. Inthe U.S. version, this seems mere melodrama. Here, it works on so many dramatic levels. One of the best things to be said about it is that it truly is "made for t.v." Which is to say that it totally exploits and expands the medium. I could no more imagine this on the big screen than on the stage. It does, in other words, everything that T.V. should do and none of the things it shouldn't. There's a lot of sex in the show, some of it more steamy than most U.S. viewers have ever seen on the tube (not counting HBO), but it's never played for shock value. It propels the story. It's honest. And yes, it's erotic. So the bottom line is, this is a very fine show, and you're not likely to see it if you don't buy it. So if you *can* afford it, you probably should.

Acteurs merveilleux, rythme, humour.... Quel bonheur!
