Great value for money (only 2 stars due to faulty refurb unit as explained in review)
This is a great device at it's normal price and even better at refurbished prices, knowing there is still a 12 month warranty.I should stress though, this is the second tablet we received as the first was not working (screen would not turn on). I'm not sure how a refurbished unit could miss such an obvious problem which raises questions. Also trying to order a return and replacement was quite difficult as the customer services individual kept asking me to run things on the tablet even though I kept stressing that the screen DID NOT WORK!!

Fire OS (Amazon version of Android) is a disaster
Great price not bad but Fire OS (Amazon's mucked around with a version of Android)is a pain. 1st half the apps even on amazon's own store don't work properly (try the trainline for instance). Even Facebook misbehaves. Loads of apps are jsut "missing" (e.g. many of the MS office 365 ones). Some can be dwonload from the google store (plenty of instructions on how to dothat) but it's a lottery whether they work (ironically not much worse than the Amazon store).I know they want to seel Amazon services but I think they'd do better to charge a bit more and just use Android neat. they could still provide their own launcher.Diifuclt one to recommened if you might want to do anythign other than watch prime and buy amazon services.

Basic Tablet. Good for Amazon services
I have had the amazon fire hd 8 ( refurbished model ) for a few days, and it is what I expected. I bought it so that I could read The Times online, while we are in lockdown. I have found it good for: reading, watching movies, and listening to music. I installed Google Play Store, and that has enabled me to use chrome, work on my documents in Drive, and access my google photos account. There are instructions on how to install it on the web, and this makes it a lot more useful. I have kept the Amazon launcher, as it is simple. Overall this is a cheap tablet, that works quite well, but comes with restrictions, that when overcome makes it a useable device.

Not all features work as well as my (5th gen) Will definitely buy brand new next time though.
I had one of these before, loved it, old one not working properly. It was 5 years old! Cannot complain. The new one works just as well but minus the two buttons that go to your history & straight back to main screen. This is annoying, not as quick to respond as my old one. Now I have to go the long way around to do anything.

Don't be too put off by lack of Google
I've been looking for a replacement tablet for ages now but was always put off the Kindle Fire by the fact you can't download Google Play apps. I was under the impression many common apps such as Youtube were not available to use on the Kindle Fire, unless you went through some convoluted fiddling with software and programming and stuff. Eventually, I decided my son's old tablet was useless so I bought a Kindle Fire for myself and gave him my own Samsung tablet which he loves.I have to say I'm very impressed with the Fire! I was able to download Youtube with no issues as it's in Amazon's own app store, and the same with Spotify. Since those are the two apps I really needed I was very happy. Kindle, Audible and shopping on Amazon are here of course, and it all works very nicely, as indeed does the "Fire Unlimited For Kids" which is excellent value allowing my son to read lots of Mr Men books and stuff.Yes, there's some apps that are NOT available, like Reddit, but the Silk browser (replacement for Chrome) lets me get onto Reddit and browse everything I would on my old Samsung. The screen is okay but I find it gets dark unless you are holding it directly up in front of your eyes. I assume the glass is very thick and it means even at the highest brightness setting things are kinda gloomy. But overall I am very, very pleased to get such a nice tablet for such a small price. It feels well made, works perfectly and allows me to do everything I did on my old Samsung tablet and more!EDIT - had this for about a month now and actually, it's not as good as I thought. Cannot download Microsoft Word on it which means it's useless for working on. The whole Kids parental control thing is also pretty much a disaster, only letting my son use certain things but not others (he can't watch any Prime Video content for example unless we come OUT of Kids Unlimited but I can't do that because then he has access to my Amazon account so can buy things!).Overall, still a good buy for the money but severely limited thanks to the poor way it's set up and the fact you can't use Word (yet you can use Outlook and OneDrive?!)

Best thing around for the money
It's no iPad but we've got two for our kids (7 & 9). This was the 2nd unit we've had to buy but the originals lasted nearly 3 years before the screens cracked. Considering the use/abuse they've had I'm surprised they lasted that long. They're definitely robust. I'd recommend getting the adult case, the kids case is very bulky. You get a reasonably decent screen, the sound and camera are no great shakes and it can be a bit slow but for £90 (or less during Black Friday) I've not seen anything remotely close. The parental controls in particular are very comprehensive so you can lock it down pretty tightly on what the kids can do/see. Also we subscribe to the Family service which gets you loads of "free" games and content, all age appropriate. If you get the 16Gb version you won't have a lot of space for apps. We've got 128Gb MicroSD cards in them. The new version handles this much better than the old one and just presents as one large disk, rather than separate internal and external storage.

Mainly good
It's OK but difficult to hold. Needs some form of handle to be able to hold comfortably., particularly when reading in bed. The stand promoted alongside the Kindle is totally useless. I had to buy a generic stand from a market stall. The "swipe" to open usually does not respond. I open the camera app to able to access the main screen. A wee bit annoying. Other than that it seems fine. Battery is quick to charge and last's well.
