I would give the book itself two stars but I'm adding two more out of fairness to the entire experience of the transaction. So, two stars for Schaefer and more stars for Amazon.This textbook was required for my Sociology class so I was stuck with having to buy it. I decided to get it in kindle version so I didn't have to schlepp a textbook around. There were many things about the book itself that I did not like. I did not find the book to be objective. To me, the book was more biased than a textbook for a course should be. I feel that Schaefer presents too many of his opinions and viewpoints as hard factual information. At one point he cited his own book as a reference.That being said, if you are forced to get this book for required reading, Amazon is Amazon - reliable through and through. If you can work and study comfortably with e-books I would definitely recommed renting it. Shell out as little money as possible because you probably won't care to add this book to your permanent collection. I wasn't good at studying from the kindle book format so I ended up having to get a paper version as well. If you are like me and need a tangible book for highlighting and taking notes in the margins and such, I was able to get an unbound version with the holes for a 3-ring binder from my University's bookstore. I was able to take out the chapters that I was working with and put them in a skinny binder so I didn't have to cart around a textbook. The unbound version was about one-third of the price of the text. The pages were a bit thinner than the pages in a hardcover textbook but not enough to matter. Just don't go whipping the pages around or the holes will rip. I am done with my semester and only accidently ripped three or four pages.Good Luck!

I was required to read this book for a sociology course and now use it to teach a dual-credit course in high school. I love how it covers both the sociological and legal aspects to the various areas of diversity. The title can be a little misleading b/c it covers many aspects of diversity and not simply racial and ethnic groups. Highly recommend for anyone in the diversity, equity and inclusion work!

This book is essentially a collection of the major events in the hardships of minority people in the US, with some snippets about their cultures. There's very little focus on sociological theory, possibly because it's written from a very moderate multicultural perspective, but this negatively impacted my class performance as I didn't know how to relate the anecdotes in the book to, say, Symbolic-Interactionism. The only parts I wasn't already familiar with were smaller factoids. I don't think my teacher even read it, because whenever I'd say something from the book she'd say I was wrong. Or if I started to quote a statistic from the book, it was unimportant. And when we read it in class, she was very upset that the book "didn't criticize Booker T. Washington enough". So, not the best book for every teacher or class.It's an almost tabloid style of writing, although I enjoyed reading it. It's not the worst sociology book I've had. It was much easier to understand than my other homework, but possibly because I already knew the subjects being covered.

The book arrived in good condition. The content and structure of the book, however, is terrible. There are a ridiculous amount of editorial and grammatical mistakes

It's a textbook so that, overall, information is fairly predictable. However, organization, sourcing and presentation are excellent. I've had other texts that were less than commendable this way. The content also is not so basic that one would feel they are reading a remedial text while at the same time, it is not overly done for an introductory class on the subject.

Needed for school. Great quality. Like new. Highly recommend renting from here!
