Very good electronics & app - highly recommend
This review is based on using the FileHub RP-WD01 for accessing/managing files on external storage (USB or SD card) from a mobile device (tablet). I did not (yet) try using it to charge a cell phone or tablet, etc. I did not try to play movies from the FileHub. I did not try using a browser-based application to access the FileHub (supposedly can do this, such as with a laptop), only the free Apple & Kindle apps. This seems very well made & substantial, not cheap & flimsy (like a similar Kingston product I tried--MobileLite, which didn't even work--wouldn't read my USB). You open the box and immediately think, "wow, this is a decent piece of electronics," not "what junk." It was also packaged well in its sturdy box, and came with a short microUSB-to-USB cord for charging.I have used this with an iPad and two Kindles (Fire HD and Fire HDX), and the free FileHub apps for both are very good (& very similar). I could easily access files from my external USB and SD card storage, and on my devices. I could xfer files between the two external storage devices or between external storage and my tablets. The app lets you select one, select all, or select many files (or even an entire folder) to manipulate. You can also just view/open files or delete files. In the app, you must get into "manage" mode to transfer or delete, but then get out of that mode to view. It took a few minutes to get used to that. You can switch between working with files on the FileHub (those on your external storage devices) or files on your host device (e.g., iPad). The apps are much, much better than the app for the somewhat similar Kingston MobileLite. Remember that the FileHub lets you access/manage your files; your mobile device and whatever apps you use on it are the ones actually opening/viewing/running files.I connected my Kindle and iPad to the FileHub simultaneously, and both were able to access the files on my external storage. You cannot xfer files directly between the mobile devices (tablets/phones) using FileHub (they don't "see" each other), but I could xfer from one mobile device to my USB drive and then from the USB drive to the other device. In the past, I've had to e-mail files to get them from one mobile device to another, or connect each device to my PC and move files that way (from iPad to PC, from PC to Kindle), using two separate interfaces, and it's a real pain. I'm cautious about security, so I don't use "cloud" storage, and this product makes it much easier to share/move files. But speaking of security...I LOVE that the wireless network the FileHub creates to talk to your device(s) has a password. So, someone else nearby in a hotel or coffee shop can't just connect to it and view the files on your USB or SD storage. I worried about that with a device like this, so I was very happy about the password. Theoretically, if someone saw "FileHub" in a list of wireless networks, they might use the app & try to access your file storage. But, they'd need the password. You can (and should!) change the password and the FileHub device name for security. (The Kingston MobileLite does not seem to have any security.)"Normal" operation is that you connect your mobile device to the FileHub via your wireless settings--you select the FileHub from the list of available wireless networks, instead of connecting your mobile device to an Internet wireless network. This lets your device communicate with FileHub, but not with the Internet. But, you can also then connect the FileHub to a regular WiFi network, so that your iPad (or whatever) can talk to the FileHub and access the Internet at the same time via the FileHub. That works fine. The wireless range was bigger than I expected. I went all over my house & never got out of range. (This makes me doubly glad for the password security.)This has decent documentation (unlike similar devices), for what it is. Not great, but much better than most these days. There are a few errors (e.g., a mislabeled diagram), but it was easy to figure it out. The device arrived charged, but the documentation actually explains how to charge it (you have to have your own "universal" USB wall charger, like for a cell phone or some tablets, or you can charge it via your PC's USB port, which would be slower). RAVPower also has more documentation on their Web site. The only problem I've had is that the power button is easy to accidentally press & shut the device off. It just took a few minutes to get used to holding the device in a way that I wouldn't do that. The FileHub WD01 is similar to RAVPower's WD02, but the WD02 has a microSD slot, not an SD slot, and the WD02 also let's you connect by Ethernet cable (RJ45) to a wired modem/router to set up your own little WiFi network to provide Internet access to several devices wireless. My review of the WD02 is very similar to this--both are very good, depending on your needs.By the way, RAVPower customer service has been quick & helpful. I had several questions before I bought any device, and they responded quickly. After using their FileHub, I had another question. It turned out to be an iPad issue, but they still quickly responded & told me exactly how to solve my problem.I highly recommend this.---- Update 9/24/14 ----I used the FileHub to back up photos recently while traveling, and discovered a deficiency with the app. Every day, I wanted to back up photos from my 2 camera SD cards onto a USB memory stick. The FileHub app does have a "select all" feature, which is great, to copy everything at once. If you have dozens of files (or more!), you don't want to have to click on every one you want to copy. However, if you "select all" and are copying many files that have already been copied, there's no "batch" way to either skip duplicates or overwrite/replace them. The app required me to individually click to skip the file copy or replace the already-copied file. After a few days, with many files on my SD card, this got very tedious. I either had to individually select the new files to copy, or individually select the previously-copied files to skip. The easy way I worked around this was to just create a new folder on the USB stick every day and copy all files from the SD to the new folder. I had a large capacity USB stick, so that was OK, but it wasn't great. I was hoping for a feature more like the iPad's photo import, which easily lets you "import all" from the SD card, keep all the files on the card, and "skip all" duplicates. Another drawback that I discovered in real-world use was that the app wanted to display thumbnails of all the photos as I used the "manage" function, but it was quite slow in doing this when I had dozens and then hundreds of files. I also didn't see a way to display the date/timestamp on a file (e.g., list files with name/date, not just show a thumbnail), so trying to find just the photos from a specific day to copy them was difficult and slow.Overall, I was still happy with the FileHub, and it allowed me to travel without a laptop and just use a small Kindle and/or iPad to back up all my precious photos (onto both the Kindle/iPad and the USB stick), which was great. But, after using it, I can see some improvements they could make to the app. Since the app is used by multiple RAVPower products, such improvements should greatly enhance other products, too. (The FileHub app is still SO much better than the app for the Kingston MobileLite, but it could be improved.)

MUST HAVE companion to any smart phone/tablet user!! Just use N Player app instead of native app
Discovering this device was a game changer for me. I can't tell you how happy I was to find it and to have it arrive and be just as cool as advertised! First, I want to tell you why I knocked off one star (which would be just half a star if I could do that) and then get on to the ways I use it and what's great about it. The only thing that is less than desirable about this device is the app it "comes with". If you plan to stream video content from a flash card to your iPhone or iPad (or whatever smart device you use) like I do, I HIGHLY recommend downloading an app called N Player instead. It's a paid app but it's incredible and totally worth it! The native app for this device sort of works I guess, but it wouldn't play every video file type I had on my flash card, which is where N Player comes in. It can handle MKV, AVI, MP4, videos with subtitles, coded with Dolby Digital Surround Sound, you name it! Enough about that though, back to this device...The first thing I love is the size and weight. It weighs less than my iPhone 6 and is about the same size (a little shorter and wider). It doesn't come with a case, so I bought one of those Amazon Basics cases meant for external hard drives and it fits perfectly in there along with a variety of cables and extra flash cards etc. See pics. Second, with the right app and files, this is SO easy to use! You may be intimidated the first time you set it up, but trust me, it's not that complicated and once you have it set up, you just turn it on, your devices will remember it and connect automatically, then you just push play and go!While there are a lot of uses for this devices, the main (and so far only) thing I use it for is to stream video content to my iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2. I keep all my videos (movies, TV shows, documentaries) on a 128GB flash card (well they don't all fit on one but I have a few cards) which I just leave in here all the time. Once it is turned on and my device connects, I just access the content on the flash card and press play! The playback is completely SEAMLESS. No buffering, no pixelation, no choppy sound. It's perfect! Even when it is several yards away from my device, it's perfect. I'm not sure how far away it can play back seamlessly as I haven't tested the limits, but I would imagine pretty far. It can also stream different content to up to 6 devices at a time (assuming they have the app installed and have been granted access by the main user). That's impressive! I've only tried this with two devices at once and it works! When I first bought this, I had all my content on a WD external drive and would plug that into this via USB and play from that, but not only is it one more thing to carry around, but the external drive draws power from the RAV to spin, so it decreases the battery life of the the RAV. So, before leaving on a trip for China (15 hour flight) I started using this with flash cards only to save battery life. I charged it in flight with one of my portable USB charger battery things (check out my reviews for those too). The best part about this thing is that it creates its own private WIFI signal for just you or anyone you allow to access it, so you don't need Internet to use it, which is why I bought it for travel. This is seriously one of my very favorite gadgets of everything I own and goes almost everywhere with me! The two times I use it most are on planes and in airports and hotels while traveling and in the gym. I bring it with me and leave it on the floor next to the treadmill and watch episodes of my favorite TV shows on my iPhone while jogging for an hour instead of watching whatever captioned crap the gym decides to have on those TVs. It's awesome! I can see people looking at me wondering, "Wait, what is THAT thing!? How does it work??"In short, if you own a smart phone and or tablet, this is a MUST HAVE accessory device for you. I use it almost every day at the gym and have taken it to China, Germany, The Netherlands and Puerto Rico with me already and have it in my backpack at all times. It still works like new! I really can't say enough about this device, especially for such a low price! Buy it now. One for yourself and 5 more to give as gifts to people you really like. Seriously, it would make the best gift ever. I hope this has been helpful for someone else! And for the record, I did NOT receive this product free or at a discount. I paid full price for it and am writing this review just to help other people who pay full price for stuff too!
