Beautiful lock - very secure, butโฆ
Ok, so - this vintage-style mortise lock is *beautiful*, and a very nice improvement to both the look and security of my apartment door. It is heavy, impressive, and quality-built. Itโs not inexpensive, so you do pay for all that gorgeousness.๐There are some other things to be aware of: this is *not* an exact replacement for all the brass mortise locks that are so prevalent in very old NYC buildings - the hole pattern for the new interior face plate is 2 holes vs 4 holes in my original lock. Why does this matter? Because if youโre replacing this kind of lock, you most likely have a steel-clad door - and drilling new mounting holes requires both a higher level of expertise *and* steel drill / bore bits, not necessarily things that a โreplacementโ shopper hasโฆ So make sure you check your face-plate hole pattern, and if youโre able to, check the bore-hole as well... I had to pay my super some cash to get all new holes drilled for this (see my first photo), which for me was preferable to the annoying product-return-and-start-over process.๐Also not cheap is the time and expense of getting key copies made. It only comes with two keys, so most people will want a couple more. (Your super should not get one of the branded brass originals, at least not until you move.) The key for this lock requires key blank #95 to copy, which apparently is not a common blank, and therefore more expensive. Who knew, right? I found this out *after* I paid my super to drill all-new holes and install the new lock. One reproduction at Loweโs would have been $12 minimum if it had been in stock. It was not. It was also not in stock at Home Depot. A month later, I still havenโt gotten my copies made, so the extent of this whole production is a bit frustrating.By the time you factor in the possible additional costs of installing the new lock on your door and copying the key, youโre committing to a fairly expensive โreplacementโ - way too much for most renters. (I personally couldnโt stomach living in a pre-war apartment with the original lock that literally hundreds of keys are probably still floating around for. You cannot just change the cylinder on a mortise lock.)SUGGESTIONS FOR MARKS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Provide three keys with a new lock. Provide a couple MARKS-branded #95 brass blanks that can be taken for cutting to a home-improvement/hardware store. Offer a reasonably-priced mail service to order more MARKS-branded brass keys by serial number.๐๐ป

Defective item!!!!
I purchased the lockset back in October. And from the beginning it gave problems with closing.... just about 2 weeks ago. And this is with the ORIGINAL key I was able to open the door but it did not come out.. and the day before it had difficulty trying to come out as well. I was trying for about 30 minutes out in the cold to remove the key until I just gave up and clipped off. I went several days without a bottom lock. So if you do not want be locked out outside of your house choose another lockset.

Not all parts fit
I have a new door latch set without a key that works. The new keyed spindle was not the proper length. I should have sent it back but needed to shut my door. So the old spindle was inserted in the new apparatus.
