OWC Superslim USB 2.0 Enclosure for Apple SuperDrive from MacBook and MacBook Pro Unibody Models.

A thin, slightly flimsy, but not cheap feeling case that works well and at the right price (I bought mine for about 1/2 the price that OWC normally sells it on their site) is an excellent deal. While it's hardly industrial grade (that's putting it mildly), it's doesn't have the low-quality, stop working immediately feel that most cheap, off-brand, direct-from-the-Chinese-factory electronics have. Since the shell is thin plastic sometimes I have to flex the opening a little to get DVDs to get sucked in properly, but then the drive operates flawlessly.If it were the normal, higher price, I'd be deeply annoyed and probably give it three stars. But for the $33 dollars I paid, it's well worth it.

I had removed the optical drive from my old MBP from 2010 to put in more storage and it just sat around in a drawer for ages. New computer and the disappearance of all optical drives from all of the computers in the house meant something had to be done. This was it and it works great. It's only as good as the drive that's in it of course, but the drive fit as it was supposed to. The materials are hardly inspiring, being very lightweight, but I don't really care much about that, honestly.

Solid build quality, although it is made of plastic. Does exactly what it says it does. I did exactly what OWC is expecting you to use this for (using a Data Doubler to replace your SuperDrive with another hard drive in a MacBook Pro) and I've been very happy with this. It does require two USB ports in order to work which is a big bummer for me, although it does have a power input if you need to free up another USB (this wasn't an issue because I have a 7-port Anker USB hub). Using this drive with my MacBook has worked flawlessly, plug-and-play worked immediately and it does exactly what it says it does! Installation took 30 seconds and I couldn't be happier.

This thing is great! I was wary of buying it after reading the negative reviews, but couldn't find anything that looked like it'd be better, so decided to go for it. Glad I did! It's a perfect housing for the Apple SuperDrive I pulled from my MacBook Pro to make room for an extra hard drive. Sure it's plastic not machined aluminum like the MacBook Pro body, but what do you want for $40? BTW, it's not JUST two pieces of plastic as another reviewer claims; there's circuitry built-in to allow the SATA drive to connect to your USB port. Works great, and is a nice sleek package that'll fit nicely in your computer bag should you choose to take it with you on the road.ONE NOTE: If your optical drive doesn't seem to have holes that line up with the mounting locations that this case uses, look more closely. My SuperDrive had holes in the right places, but they were covered up with a thin foil that looks like part of the metal body. Cut the foil away with an X-Acto knife and you're good-to-go.

I have a Blu-ray slot drive I used to have inside a 2011 MBP. After the AMD GPU overheated and fried my computer, I kept both the original DVD drive and the after-market Blu-ray one. Other enclosures didn't fit right, but this one is perfect. The three drive mounting screws included with this enclosure aren't really necessary, as SATA slot drives are all the same size and fit snugly.Just slide open the case and insert your drive into the SATA plug. Slide the lid back into place, then insert and gently tighten the fully threaded screw into the one open foot. Lastly, stick on the one missing foot.The USB cord includes a second wire and plug to insert into an external USB power supply if needed. (External power supply not included). Modern computers with USB 3 have plenty of power using only the one plug. Some computers with only USB 2 don't have sufficient power by themselves.It would be nice if the case were aluminum to match Apple products. This one is made of cheap looking plastic. I don't believe there are any metal cases available for sale though. Just black plastic like this one, and even cheaper ones painted silver.The screws and foot are delivered inside the case. It would be better to have all the parts plainly visible outside the case IMO. That way it's easy to tell all the parts are present without opening the case. The three mounting screws are different than the case screw, but are packed together and look almost identical. They're not interchangeable though, so it would be better if they were easier to tell apart, or packed separately. I would also stick on a little removable arrow to show how to open the case for the first time. It's little touches which differentiate quality products from the rest.

When the is installed, it places enough down pressure on the flimsy aluminum top of the superdrive that a DVD is not allowed to spin. I tried running it without the cover and every few minutes, it goes offline and my MacBook Pro has to reacquire it. I even tried a different cord. No change. As I mentioned in the title, utter garbage.

This enclosure was exactly what I was looking for. I had rescued an optical drive from an older MacBook Pro that was headed for the salvage yard, and I was most interested in using the drive with my Mac Mini, which doesn't have one. This product has allowed me to utilize this drive as an external, and the performance has been perfect. Installation instructions are clear and detailed. The only potential issue that some may have is removal of the cover - just persist and it will come off. Love it.

Product did not fit my late 2009 IMAC superdrive although Vendor did specifically indicate that it did.
