Teach Yourself Bluegrass Mandolin - Book/Online Audio

great book for musicians who want to add mandolin
If you play other instruments, and want to quickly learn high level mandolin playing in the bluegrass style from a genius, Andy Statman teaches through classic tunes with satisfying arrangements. It is probably too fast for people with no other instrument background, but if you already play guitar/violin/banjo, you will rapidly feel that you now also play mandolin. Good chord chart in the back as well, and the downloadable mp3s are essential. Pairs nicely with the suprisingly good "mandolin for dummies" (very different from other books in that series) which has a bit more background info for earlier beginners but also has some nice arrangements.

Great songs to learn, not the best teaching
THe songs in this book are a great collection of things that are great to learn. Each song has two ways to play it: the melody and a solo-type version. I have found that you can go through it and learn the melody parts then probably go back and be ready for the harder solo version. The reference CD has great playing on it, but it is a bit fast, and could be discouraging for the true beginner. Buy this book to learn with. Hold off on using the CD until you are really getting the stuff under your fingers.

Useful
I bought this for my boyfriend for Valentine's Day and he says it's very helpful with figuring out particular tricks and techniques to get just the right sound. He also said the CD was nice because it allows you to hear how the song is supposed to be played.

Great book and music - Should be labeled Intermediate
This should be considered an intermediate book. This would be pretty far advanced for any beginner. There is no oral instruction at all. Getting into Bluegrass Mandolin from Mel Bay is a much better book for beginners and intermediate players.

fine book n CD
Big range of skill from basic stuff right through to double stops at a finger knotting speed.Good tunes too and little intro and outro licks.

A Mixed Effort
The introductory material in the book is rather brief for my tastes. There are short pieces on how to hold the mandolin, how to pick, how to tune, an introduction to the musical notation used in the book, and some scales. I would have liked more exercises given to build up to playing actual tunesAround a third of the book is taken up with song tabs, with instruction on how to play them being a little sparse. However, the tab is very clear, and they really come into their own with the excellent CD that accompanies the book. Each song features on the CD twice - once with the mandolin piece, to help you understand how it should be played, and once with only the backing (banjo, fiddle, guitar) so that you can play along.Without the CD, I'd rate this book at two stars. With the CD, it gets a fantastic 4.
