Sony- stick you at every opportunity- ZERO Stars
I paid $250 for a voice recorder and couldn't find the CD when I replaced my laptop. You'd think Sony would offer a download or replacement through support- but NO. You have to BUY the software all over again. The $250 recorder is now useless because of their proprietary format, but I'll be darned if they are getting another penny of my money, and they shouldn't get a penny of yours.

Not as advertised
This product was advertised to be able to take to a conference, meeting and be able to record the speaker. I can not record anything unless my mouth is right up against the mic. Piece of crap and I paid over a hundred dollars. I sure feel like a sucker. I could have purchased a cheap recorder and got better results. Too much background noise, even when there was no other noise in the room. Good only as a personal microphone.

GREAT UNIT--BUT NO SOFTWARE SUPPORT FOR NEWER OPERATING SYSTEMS--CHECK THE SITE BEFORE PURCHASING
this is a great unit BUT BE ADVISED---IF YOU BUY THIS UNIT --IT'S OLDER AND THEY DO NOT HAVE SOFTWARE TO WORK WITH NEWER OPERATING SYSTEMS LIKE WINDOWS 7 AND 8. You can't take files off this recorder (according to Sony) without the software. You can download copies of the Digital Voice Editor software, at the sony site, by plugging in your unit's number, but you CAN'T USE THIS DEVICE WITH NEWER OPERATING SYSTEMS.If my XP computer dies, my unit, which is working perfectly, will be useless unless I can find a 3rd party software that will work.I love this device, it's wonderful and It's great for lectures, doctor visits, note taking, you name it, and it's clear and you can save files in several formats and I have never had any problems with it. BUT IT'S AN OLDER UNIT NOW IN 2014

Learning to maximize
This Sony voice recorder can excel in recording music if certain changes are made. 1 - Record at the highest quality setting, 2 - Use a good external electret stereo mike like the Sony ECM-MS907. If miking at a distance for a larger group, use a small pre amp like the Archos. This combination will give you CD quality in a mini package.

Great recorder
Outstanding value with the included Dragon Naturally Speaking 8 software!Very clear playback sounds. Those who complain about its recording quality should definitely compare it with other portable voice recorders (i.e. Olympus), or they simply don't know how to properly operate this advanced product.

Mixed bag
Just for reference: I'm no expert and this is only my second experience with digital recorders.I have mixed feelings about the Sony ICDSX46VTP. I've been testing it out for a couple of weeks. The folders, recording, controls and software are all very good. But, I have these issues with this unit:The reviews about it picking up your touch thru the mic are not exaggerated. I was surprised (shouldn't have been) by this major disapointment. It would probably be impossible to capture an interview with any quality while holding this unit. The display is too dark to control it very well in dim situations. If I had to do it again, I'd try a different product.

Versatile!
The sony ICDSX46VTP digital voice recorder is very versatile. It is easy to use and the sound quality is great. I am able to record my lectures without adding an additional external microphone without having the teacher put it in their pocket. Transferring, editing, and converting files takes all of 30 seconds. It's a must have.
