Poor design but unfortunately necessary to use the GP-1.
Bottom Line: The GP-1 is a great piece of equipment for geotagging your photos. Unfortunately the GP-1 CA10 cable is the weak link in what would be a great product.I've owned 2 GP-1 units for years and use them for times that I'm shooting with 2 cameras. I used to have 2 Wolverine GPS units but both simply stopped working after 12 - 18 months so I've had some experience with various GPS camera devices.Problem: The weakest point in the cable is the end that connects to the GP-1 unit. I have gone through 3 of these cables over a few years and they all break at the exact same point. It's a design flaw. If Nikon actually cared about this issue the solution would be simple: Make a durable swivel joint for this end of the cable or make the stiff cable material both durable and more flexible. This is a known problem that Nikon seems to ignore probably because it makes them money. Every time the cable breaks you have to buy a replacement.Recommendations: Until Nikon decides to rectify the cable problem the best way to save money is by not having to purchase replacement cables in the first place. Here are some things you can do to prolong the cable's life.1) I've learned the hard way that when you put your camera in a case do not leave the GP-1 CA10 cable attached to the GP-1 or the camera body. Remove the cable completely and store it in a separate pocket. Even in a well protected bag when the cable is attached it gets pushed and bent which ultimately leads to fraying and breakage.2) For those times when you need to use your hot shoe but still want to geotag make sure to use the Nikon 27005 GP-1 CL1 Camera Strap Clip. This will keep you from having your GP-1 hanging by its fragile cable while you are shooting.

Perfect for Nikon D850
Allowed me to use my Nikon GP-1 from my D750 on my new D850. Perfect for adding GPS location into metadata.

Cable works, but design stinks
I have the Nikon GPS for my SLRs. The original cable covering has broken at each connection end, exposing the internal wires. This is because the design of this cable stinks. If you place your camera on its side, with the shutter release on the higher side, both ends of the cable are supporting the weight of the SLR, bending the connectors and causing the cable to wear and eventually break. Since it's not always possible or practical to keep an SLR horizontal, this is a huge design flaw for the cable. A few simple angle or design fixes could easily resolve this, but like so many other users, I am forced to buy a spare cable as a backup or replacement. Tip: wrap the cable in electrical tape at each connector to prolong the life of this poorly designed cable.

Redesign this thing please!!!
This is a money pit. The cable works just fine however if there were some neweer folks to design this cable we would all be better off. As other reviewers have stated. If the cable was at least oriented like this item RFN-4s Wireless Remote Shutter Release for Nikon DSLR with MC30 Type connection (Nikon D200, D300, D300s, D500, D700, D800, D800E, D810, D1, D2, D3, D3x, D3s, D4, D5) - Transmitter and Receiver Set Where the cable hugs the camera and goes into the connector then great. Also the cable doesn't have to be that long. Furthermore the GP-1 since it doesn't allow your flash to work once installed could be longer and include a flash shoe on the end of it so that you could still use your flash without having to remove the GP-1 and still use a flash. So that it looked more like a diving board with the gps unit in front of the flash. This would allow more wedding photographers to use it. The loss of flash is a big deal for a lot of people and the GP-1 prevents you from using both. The on-camera flash and a speed light. You can still have off-camera flash with some Yongou 603N's Yongnuo RF-603NII-N1 Wireless Flash Trigger Kit for Nikon D700 D800 D1 D2 D3 D4 but that isn't what the design is all about. I believe ideally the best design for this would be an Item that secured to the flashshoe as a passthrough and then allowed the user to connect it to the 10 pin with sturdy supports holding both and strong enough not to damage the unit or the camera in case of rocking around. With this your cable is going to break eventually.

Good Product
As I expected, the cable is too long for my D850.I knew the length of the cable is a issue. I have not tried GPS signal reception yet but it should be same functionality I used for D7000 with a different type cable. Thanks

Camera Connection Bends Downward
The design of this replacement cable is worse than the original. The original cable on the GP-1 has a bend at the connector to the camera so it angles upward and makes it easier to attach a camera with an L-bracket to a tripod in the vertical position. I am not talking about the right angle part of the connection. It is the part leading to the right angle connection, see photo. This cable has the bend in the opposite direction so it points downward and is in the way when attempting to use an L-bracket. On the original connector the cable was pointed up from the camera, but with this connector it is pointed downward. This looks to me to be an older design as it also has a different knob to screw in the connector. The design is obviously flawed, as I have had two cables break. One at the connector to the camera and one at the connection to the GP-1. The Gp-1 units have sustain some substantial blows and still work, but not the cables.
