How dark does the room have to be?

The room does not need to be dark, you actually need light in the room to make it work. You just need a normal well lit room.

Using the photo projector, how do you adjust for a smaller (than 12x18) reflected image?

You can make the reflect image smaller by lowering the height of the head. We have in depth instructional videos at LUCYhelp.com

Can I order just the lucy photo enlarger alone?

Yes, but you have to buy direct from DrawLUCY.com

Is this for Left handed as well as right handed people? Is the support arm stable or subject to moving around?

Yes, it works for both left and right handed people, can easily switch back and forth. And yes, the flex arm is stable. But remember a camera lucida creates a virtual image, so if you move your head the image will move as well. But it's easy to keep the image lined up, and easy to line it back up if you need to take a break.
