Originally released in 2006, this two CD set contains a pair of previously unavailable albums recorded by Chris Robinson and the boys. Tall was recorded in 1993 and eventually morphed into their '94 release Amorica. There are early versions of songs that made that album as well as other tracks that remained unreleased until this double disc set was issued. The second album, Band, was recorded in 1997 after their album Three Snakes And One Charm. It is unknown why the album Band sat in the vaults for so long, since many fans rate it as one of The Black Crowes' best studio efforts to date!

The Best Black Crowes that you've never heard.
If you are a Black Crowes fan it is well worth your effort to find this recording (it is currently out of print). These recordings span pre-Amorica 1993 to 1997 before Marc Ford left the band and they are perhaps some of best material the Black Crowes have ever recorded. Everything is tight, vocals are great, guitars amazing, love the keys, possibly some of the most creative music of the 1990s. Definitely the Black Crowes at their best.

Know the Black Crowes for this lost material
Less committed listeners know the Black Crowes mainly for their cover version of "Hard to handle", which got heavy rotation on both mainstream and alternative stations in the 90's. That old Otis Redding tune (featured on their debut album and also released as a single) brought the Black Crowes quickly into the spotlight and established a fan base, a certain number of which were "Dead Heads" who knew the tune well since Pigpen used to sing killer versions of it with the Grateful Dead, but "Hard to Handle" does'nt really represent the Black Crowes at their best- if you really want to know the Black Crowes, get "The Lost Crowes" 2 CD set. I also liked the second album called "The southern harmony and musical companion" when it came out, I was not as impressed with their next few releases, but I have to say this 2 disc "lost" set containing the prototypes of several songs is some of the best Black Crowes I've heard. In some respects you could call this the Crowes "Exile on main street"- sessions haunted by the demons of excess and dissension. Their label would not release the "Band" sessions, and this line up of the crowes dissolved, leaving the group addled. As the booklet notes allude, these are some of the reasons this stuff did not see the light until much later. Viewed from a different perspective, it turns out the sessions stand as some of their better work. The influence of the Rolling Stones is clear- the raw, rootsy gospel tinged sound on some of these tracks owes something to Exile on main street, especially on tunes like "If it ever stops raining".These discs give you all the best qualities of the Black Crowes- the gravelly vocals of Chris Robinson, the dirty guitars, and Hammond organ all mixed together in a rock and roll stew. I don't know if you can give the Black Crowes a lot of points for being highly innovative but they were able to draw from bands that came before (like the Rolling stones, The Faces, and the Allman brothers) and create a distinctive sound. And at the time they hit the scene, they were a breath of fresh air. They are one of the better American rock and roll bands to emerge in the last 25 years. The Crowes do a lot of hard rockers here and also some very nice acoustic flavored numbers like "Wyoming and me". There is a rough character to the sessions at times, but that is what makes this set special, it works to enhance rather than detract from the music of the Black Crowes....this is the crowes at their dirty southern bluesy best. I suppose it comes down to whether you prefer a more polished/arranged crowes sound to the more live and raw sound heard here. In any case I don't think you need to be a long time Black Crowes fan to appreciate this release, nor is it somehow substandard to their other releases, as some of the other reviews suggest. Actually "Lost sessions" and "Southern harmony and musical companion" are my favorites CD's by them. The sound quality is overall well enough, but the cd mastering is on the loud/compressed side. I'd recommend this set to both dedicated Black Crowes fans and to "newbies".

A must-have for any fan
This set of recordings not only sounds great, but it's an excellent look at the earlier versions of songs from Amorica. Fans may recognize some of the previously unreleased songs on disc 1, since a few have been staples of the live show. It's great to hear recorded versions. All in all, new Crowes is good Crowes...even if the songs are 10 years old...

This is one of my favorite Black Crowes CD's and it sucks that it's out of print and kind of on the pricey side but well worth it for a Crowes fan.

Great Crowes Release - 4.5 Stars
Wow, what a treat for Crowes fans! Captured at their creative peak, these two albums are true gems. Amorica happens to be one of my top ten favorite albums of all time and "Tall" offers a blueprint into that great release. While Amorica is more polished and textured, "Tall" is by no means a weaker treatment. These classic songs are more intimate on this release and offer the listener a great midnight second helping of that great album."Band" is just plain and simple a smokin' old, new release. Why this sat on the shelf for ten years is beyond me. While it is very hard to single out favorites, the first two selections, "Paint an 8" and "Another Roadside Tragedy" are particularly great. A one half star hit from me for the Rhino effort. Strange codes where a song list should be on the disc. A minor issue as this is great American rock n' roll from a group of really talented musicians in their prime. What else could a fan want? Highly recommended.

Yep, great music from real musos...both good discs...i prefered `Band`, all new tracks. `Tall` is also good but most tracks are from `Amorica`, different earlier recordings, pretty tasty stuff all up! Should a Crowes fan buy this...Yep!
