A wonderful must read book in the series
I love this series. Its not flashy or obvious like western novels and styles of writing. In this book we get to experience yet another side of D. I enjoyed the fact the tale was different from the others. Here D is escorting 4 people across a desert and the foe they face is fascinating and sad at the same time.I loved the fact the girl in this book wasn't after D but had her own troubles to contend with. She had been captured 8 years ago and was a servant serving in a nobel house. It is hinted at that D's father was either a visitor or lived at the same house and that there was contact between the two.I loved that fact that this book fits in with others in the series, namely book 2 in looking at the obsession that D's father had with creating a superior being. A hybred between Nobel and man with all of the strengths and very few of the weaknesses. D was his only success. This book explores more of that side of the nobel history and where it stands at the present time this book is set.The treads running through all the novels a drawing together IMO. But there are still questions. Why does D hunt Nobels. Is it really because he isn't fit for anything else? Is it vengence on his father?Spoiler - we also find out in this novel that a dhampirs child will also be a dhampir which I didn't know before. Soooooo if D ever breaks down and sires a child on a woman it will be the same as he is and his fathers wish for creating a new race of super beings would be furfilled. Makes me think this is one of the main reasons D keeps his distance from the ladies. If a new race of beings like D were to spread with all of the strengths of the nobels and none of the weakness then the nobels would rise again. Or at least I think so.Im not sure where Hideyuki Kikuchi is going with this series but Im glad that at least with this novel we get to see a bit further into the mystery that is D.

An Exploration of Non-carbon Life
During my most recent re-read of this title I found that the most interesting parts of this story had to do more with the cultural insights of the reality of being a dhampir in this world. You get to see a little of what it's like to be a parent of a dhampir as well as the experiences of one that does not follow the path of a hunter. The anecdotal interludes really help shape more of the mystery that is D.I found the conclusion more baffling than mysterious and a touch unsatisfying. Another volume that left you with unfinished business and questions that will likely never get answered.

My favorite D novel so far
My favorite D novel so far. Coolest characters and best plot so far in my opinion. The translation, to me, is a lot smoother than previous novels. D still didn't have much development, and I hope that changes in future volumes. The villain of the novel was more interesting to me that the others so far in the series.

First time a land mass is a Vampire
Hideyuki definitely went in another direction with this installment. A sentient desert that traps victims within its endless sand dunes. A small cast of characters and the near absence of vampires had me wondering with this one. It seems that D might be the one who is hunted here.Aside from the typical left hand snide comments and the very limited dialogue that is expected of D, the story was a fresh take on character development for a change. Not nearly as much action as the other novels. Which is funny because Hideyuki coined the term Action Horror genre in his postscript, labeling his work as such.If you like vampire hunting stories, check out my trilogy.4 out of 5 starsF. D. Gross

I love this series
I love this series. It is good if you like Mythology and Scifi mixed into one. Although, I will say there is a lot of misogyny, that is kind of annoying...which is uncomfortable when you recommend it to female friends.

Storia Piacevole
Consigliato.

Talk to the Hand!
Vampire Hunter D ist ein echter "Page-Turner". Echtes Crack in Papierform. Wenn man einmal angefangen hat, kann man - fast - nicht mehr aufhören. Nur leider gibt es nicht viel neues in den Romanen. Ab Roman Nr. 4 war das Thema grundsätzlich ausgereizt. Dennoch: Gut! Man weiß, was man bekommt.
