It ACTUALLY works! Updated... It didn't work...
I am so excited! Have you ever had a dog so yappy and aggressive that it woke you up all hours of the night barking and growling at other members of the household who were just getting up to use the restroom or getting a drink? I have! I have been contemplating rehoming my dog because she never let's me sleep at night. I decided I'd give this a try. It's only day one and it's working SO well. My house is at peace! I'm not EVEN joking! I used the training button to stop the growling and after two growls and two button pushes, my dog has not growled since! My sons were never allowed to enter my home without her going ballistic and if they had friends over, she wouldn't stop barking until they left, even if they stayed the night! My son had a friend over today, she did two barks. That's it. Later My girlfriend came home and Luna did a bark and a half. Usually she goes psycho when she sees my girlfriend. I am in LOVE with this device. I've never seen my dog so quiet and calm. I even take it outside with me when I walk her since she literally starts acting like a psycho the moment her foot crosses the threshold from inside the house to outside the house. Thank you so much for restoring peace in my home. I might actually start to love her all again. The struggle has been real. I'm a mom of 4, a student, and working. I need my sleep! I'm looking forward to sleeping through the night tonight. This quit working after a couple of weeks. I sent it back and got a replacement, it did the same thing. Worked for a couple weeks and then quit working. It would go off over little noises, but not actually produce a sound. The sound can be heard by younger kids by the way. I couldn't hear it, but my kids would get annoyed by it.

Less than 1 week and we don't even need this anymore! I love it.
Reviews were a hit or miss, so I decided to at least give it a try for only $20. It worked out for me and I'm so pleased! I have 2 dogs. A Lhasa-chon and Shorkie. LC has used a citronella collar and it works..when its on, but its a bit heavy and I felt bad putting it on all the time. The weight would be too much for S so I looked into collarless options. I've only had this for 1 week now and we are only 10% reliant on it now (when UPS comes by). For some background, there are at least 3 dogs immediately surrounding our backyard. 2 directly across (little angry barkers) and one big old gentle dog that likes to look over our fence. The yappers are our dogs mortal enemies. On a larger range, there's about 5 other dogs that we can hear barking that will set off our dogs or neighbor dogs, which in turn set off our dogs. Going out to potty would more than 50% of the time result in crazed barking, and both neighbors and I calling them back in or picking them up. Within the first day, that has never occured again. The neighbor dog would run to the fence and bark, our dogs ran over and barked and worked themselves up, then the sound went off and our dogs immediately stopped and moved away. I felt like I was witnessing the parting of the red sea. That happened one more time and that was the end of that. Now my dogs just notice the neighbor dogs and might run around but never bark or go into wild fits. Sometimes my dog will look at the barking dog, then look at the petsafe box and repeat a few times. Now we don't even take it outside and we still get the results. Everytime they go outside and don't bark back, I reward them with praise or treats and they've responded wonderfully. When my husband comes home and the garage door opens, it used to be a mess of barking as well. 3 times it went off and again, don't even need this anymore. They gather at the door and wait silently. Honestly, it's exceeded my expectations. I purchased this as an experiment with the plan to buy 2 more if it worked (to cover entry, outdoors and upstairs) but I don't even need to anymore. We only keep it by the door now for package delivery, which still pisses off the dogs slightly. The risk is a $20 purchase that doesn't work on your dogs. The payoff of calm quiet dogs that don't work themselves up into a frenzy is worth so much more to me than that. I can't guarantee this will work on your furry companions but it is absolutely worth trying.

Just OK.
I was a little bit skeptical at first since some reviewers said this was not ideal for homes with multiple dogs but I decided to give it a shot anyway and I'm very glad that I did. I have two 15 pound dogs. One of them is much more likely to bark than the other. We live in a townhome in an area that has lots of people (and their dogs) walking by at a fairly constant rate. We also have a 7-month-old baby at home. Needless to say, when it is nap time, it is IMPERATIVE that the dogs don't bark and wake up the baby. We also don't have air conditioning, and in So Cal it is nice to be able to leave your front door open (and screen door closed and locked) to allow some air flow. We were at our wit's end until we found this handy dandy little device. About 30 minutes after I put it out by the front door, one of our dogs started barking and running towards the door like she does anytime somebody walks by (and puts our lives in danger I'm sure) and after about three or four barks she abruptly stopped and walked back to me looking very guilty indeed! The only negative I would have for this is that you need a 9 volt battery for it and it doesn't come with it. I had to run to the store for the battery when I realized I didn't have one as it is not as common as say AA or AAA batteries. But for $20 I can't complain too much, especially since it worked so well for me! Edit: It worked really well for like 2 days. After that the dogs just ignored it. :(

Didn't work for us
We bought this product with great hopes of having a little freedom without fear of upsetting the neighbours. We have two dogs: a 9-year-old Coton du Tuléar and an 18-month-old Miniature Schnauzer. The problem is, our Coton will bark at anything: a leaf floating by, a low-flying bird spotted from the window, the loo gurgling...etc. Her bark is acceptable and not very loud. Bailey's however is another story. His bark never "dropped" and he gives out a high-pitched, deafening whinny and then there's a feed-off-each-other barkfest. We went out ONCE in 18 months for dinner over at a friend's and when we came home, the neighbour politely notified us that she couldn't sleep as Bailey went on and on and she was worried he would have a heart attack. We set the unit up at dog level by the back door. Just to give you some idea of how insane it is when the postman comes, he wears EARPLUGS to deliver our mail. We have tried every training trick imaginable to quieten Bailey as soon as the postman comes, to no avail, so one of us has to pick him up and rush him out of the kitchen while the other signs for packages etc. While this is going on, the postman assures us that he has never met a dog like this, that there are some very good training programs etc. in the vicinity - you get the picture. So five minutes after setting this up, a bee buzzes past and Candy woofs. Bailey then begins the whinnying. Candy stops, head on one side, listens to the sound for a second or two, then carries on. Bailey follows suit while the unit flashes red to let US know it is working. This scenario repeated approximately 20 times before we decided to send the unit back. We are happy that it worked for some pooches and are now desperately trying to find some other, non-shocking or squirting device to help out.

Not effective for a young lab with SA
After reading so many great reviews for this product, I was very excited to give it a try. Our 11 month old Labrador Retriever has separation anxiety and will bark constantly when crated. He is crate trained, sleeping in his kennel every night which he is perfectly fine with because people are home with him. But, he has emotional melt downs whenever he can't be right by our side during the day. Having flexible hybrid work schedules, someone is always able to be home with the dog, but in the rare instance that we both have to be out of the house or if we go out to dinner, we have to crate him for a short time. We leave a Nest camera on the kennel and have confirmed that he is anxious and barks non-stop the entire time we're gone (as long as 2 hours). I had high hopes that this device would help stop the barking and get him to settle down and relax. Well, we tried going out to dinner one night after getting this delivered. I put in the battery, gave the button a test try and the dog perked up and was very concerned, so I confirmed it was working. We put the dog in his crate, set the device a few feet away facing him and set up the camera to monitor him. He barked the entire time we were out....this device, although functioning as it should, was completely ineffective for our dog. There's no question that he could hear it, but the sound obviously is not offensive enough to get him to stop barking, particularly when he is in such an anxious state. This was a last ditch effort to address this behavioral issue and sadly, we were let down. The device is very easy to use, small, affordable and returnable, so it's worth a try for your dog!

OMGosh! Ahh!
We have a year and a half old (21.5 lb.) Cockapoo and were just about to get a new 7 wk old puppy of the same breed. Our Cockapoo barked a bit more than we'd like-especially at the very busy coming and goings at our neighbors' home across the street from us. Our neighbor is a preacher and there are guests coming and going at his home every single day, many times a day especially on weekends. Our attempts to curb our dog's barking seemed to be falling on deaf ears. We tried shutting our blinds ( I hated blocking the natural light and view, but he could still see plenty through the cracks in and around the blinds anyway). I tried the simple "time out" by saying "no barking" and putting him into his pen for a few minutes but that was not very effective (even though he could not see out the front of our home while in his pen). I really didn't want to try a shock collar and wasn't terribly interested about the spray collars either. Our dog is typically quite friendly and curious, but at times can be non-aggressively timid. I worried that a behavior correction device might make him fearful or more timid. I was hesitant to try this device based on its' lukewarm ratings, but I figured, "If this thing works for us and costs less than $30, it will be amazing!" When I first tried the device during a barking episode I very calmly said, "No barking" and turned it on. My dog stopped dead in his tracks and looked toward me (I stood right next to the unit on the high kitchen counter) and had the expression of "What in the HECK was that?!?" He showed no fear or worry (thank goodness), just literally like "Holy smokes, WHAT WAS THAT?!?" and then he walked over to his favorite spot on the couch and quietly laid down. I have used the device about at least 6 more times (over a two week period) and almost every time he does the same thing, stops barking and goes and lays down on the couch. He shows no sign of stress or freaking out. I have continued to very calmly say "No barking" right before I turn on the unit during his barking episodes. I have noticed a dramatic decline in his barking, sometimes he'll stop with just my voice command, or sometimes he won't bark anymore, but rather uses a very hushed gentle "woof-woof" which I think sounds cute and sweet. I didn't want him to teach our new puppy to do excessive barking or have the two of them feed off each other and exacerbate the episodes. I also don't expect to have silent dogs and do not use this device all the time or when they are playing and just being regular dogs. As a matter of fact, I use the device much less often and for very short durations (literally a minute or two) because it has proven to be so successful in our home. I know that everyone's success rate will vary, as dogs are all individuals, but I am so very thankful that I went ahead and decided to just try this thing out. I can not hear anything when it goes off. The blinking green light lets you know it's on and working, when the red light flashes you know that a two second ultrasonic sound is being emitted. I gave this unit 4 stars instead of 5 only because it does not have an on/off switch-if the battery is in, it's always on and to make it so that it doesn't "alarm" you must remove the battery. For me, this means the battery sits on the counter next to the unit with the battery door laying on the counter beside it, and I have to connect and disconnect the battery each time I want to use the device. Having an on/off switch would be SO much more user friendly, but it works and I'm keeping it!! I try to be very gentle with the battery wire adapter so as not to short out the wires. As per the directions, if you have more than one dog and any one of them barks when this thing is on, they are all going to hear the "correction sound"-something to consider for you and yours. I am so glad there are options other than shock and spray collars. I really like that I can control when this thing is on and off and that my dog does not need to wear an additional collar device. Two big thumbs up!! March 6, 2013 update. So we've had this device for over a year now. It continues to work as I described above. I wanted to mention that I do NOT leave the unit "on" hardly at all. I still basically just plug the battery in when they start barking away for ambient noise or alarming sights (to them, which is almost anything and anybody) outside or a knock at our door. Perhaps because of the "mostly off/only on when I want barking to stop" manner of using this device has a lot to do with my continued success. They still seem to not like the sound, but have not "gotten used to it, or desensitized" and they also have not developed any adverse or fearful behavior because of the sound. About half the time all I have to do is hold up the device so they can see it and say, "no barking" and I don't even need to put the battery in. My dogs seem much more easily set off now that we have two of them; if one has any "alarm" trigger the second jumps in immediately as back up. I can't say that I didn't expect this however. I'm still on my original battery. Occasionally another sharp, loud sound will trigger the device to emit it's sound, but I do not find the device to be overly sensitive. I can see how people who leave the device on all the time would have trouble with their pet becoming desensitized, fearful, and probably confused about the sound emitting when they didn't bark. My house is silent now and my cell phone just rang (volume on highest) as it sat literally 3" from the "on" unit and the unit did not emit a signal. The phone scared me and made me jump, but the device did not trigger! Sharp noises seem to trigger it, like a clap of hands or slapping your hand on a table or counter, or a yell. A cough or sneeze has not set it off. Based on the reviews, you're still going to take a gamble whether this device "works" on your dog(s), but if it does then I think you will find the benefits very much worth the price.

It’s not foolproof but it works!
Like most dog training devices, you can’t just turn this on and expect it to do all the work. That being said, it has worked amazingly for us! Our 10m old puppy was getting in a bad habit of barking in her crate while my husband and I were working so I decided to give it a go. I placed it next to her crate and we happen to have a camera facing her crate so I can look back and see when it has given correction. The good: When it emits the sound the light flashes red so I kept an eye on it to see how it did when she barked and watched her response. It works perfectly, even sometimes when she is clear across the house in another room or outside. She responds by visibly flinching and immediately quiets down. I’d say within a day her bad barking habit was gone. The bad: it occasionally picks up aberrant noises as barking. Since I already knew her response when it goes off I noticed a few times her flinching when we were cleaning or I was playing piano loudly on low keys. Sure enough it had gone off inappropriately. So now if we’re doing something really loud or if I’m playing the piano I unplug the battery (it would be really nice if it had an off switch, but it doesn’t) to avoid her being inappropriately corrected. I imagine if I didn’t take the time to do this, and she was unfairly corrected, she would either stop responding or be a very unhappy pup! To sum up, I’m really pleased with this product. But you do have to put some work in. I hope nobody is torturing their dogs with it expecting it to be foolproof.

It distracts dogs, it doesnt stop the barking
When i first favorited this item, it had more than 4 stars. But when i finally decided to go ahead and buy it, since i dont like the idea of shock collars, the item was at 3 stars. I should have listened to some of the reviews. While this item is not expensive at all, it was a TOTAL waste of money. My mom has 4 small dogs, a shih tzu pure breed and THREE shih tzu/apsalapsa mixed breeds. They are all small, about the size of normal sized house cats. Well when i visit her on the weekends, all i hear are their barking from when they play with each other. They dont do it all day but when they do, its rampant and can go on for an hour, at random parts of the day. I bought this hoping it will shut them up. I was dead wrong. When i first got the device. I tested it. The dogs would be in their little gated playpen and i would sneak up near them while they were just looking around aimlessly and i would press the device's manual button. Their reaction was just a surprised, wondered look. You know how dogs tilt their head at an angle if they see or hear a funny sound. Well thats all the bark control is good for, to make your dog make weird face angles. I thought maybe i should just wait til they actually bark, because thats what this is meant for. So i placed the device next to the couch, which is literally 6 feet from their little play pen. And before you know it, they still barked and the device didnt phase them AT ALL. Its like i took the battery out of the damn thing. All 4 of them just barking away at each other, or when someone rings the door bell. They just barked and barked like nothing is wrong. I told my mom this is seriouly bad and they need to be trained otherwise they'll never stop barking. So we're thinking about getting those shock collars afterall. Word of advice, DONT buy this unless you have probably ONE dog that occasionally barks, but you want him/her to stop barking when it is really not necessary.

Don’t Try It, It Will Terrorize Your Dog
Despite some shaky reviews I bought this because I have a Petsafe collar that works great. Unfortunately this unit is absolutely not functional due to being much, much too sensitive. I have a quiet house in a rural area, and even when I was trying to tiptoe around, this bark deterrent unit was constantly going off for no reason. It is useless as a training tool because of this, and will just confuse and upset your dog. I returned it. Don’t buy it. I’m going to get a manually activated one instead, which I was hoping to avoid. Also as other reviews have mentioned there is no off switch, and it’s really hard to disconnect the battery. Not that it really matters since there’s effectively no time it can reasonably be left on.
