Nice Collection of Bach Excerpts but Could be Better
Playing Bach is a vital part of learning baroque repertory and collections like this certainly help. Two things could have made the book much better. First, listing the source of each piece on the page and not just in the table of contents. Going through the book, you have page after page of gigue and page after page of allegro and you have to go back to the contents page to figure our where they came from. It feels like a big pile of excerpts. The second improvement would have been, as another reviewer observed, to spiral bind the book. You must beat the book into submission to the point that you damage it in order to get it to sit on the stand.

A treasure for flutists who yearn for more Bach.
This is an absolute gem for we flutists who cannot get enough Bach. The transcriptions by Robert Stallman are exemplary. My only frustration is in the binding. It is nearly impossible to keep this volume open on my music stand since it is so tightly bound. The publisher is Carl Fischer. It may be this company’s responsibility. I doubt that it is Stallman’s.

Won't Stay Open on a Music Stand
Mr. Stallman did an outstanding job transposing the works for flute and the product description is completely accurate. One wishes however, that he'd insisted on a spiral binding by Carl Fisher Publishing so that the volume would open flat on a music stand. It's 113 pages long in a tight paperback binding which, even after bending it back on itself and breaking it's spine, tends to spring shut. So, 5 stars for the work itself, and 3 for the binding.

Great book
Amazing collection. Inspires you to just play for hours and hours. Categorizing them by type of work — i.e. Preludes, Sarabandes, Gigues, Bourrees — really allows you to appreciate the wide range of music Bach wrote.

This is without question a great book but the print is simply too small for many flutists' eyes including mine.

A Treasury of Old and "New" Works for Solo Flute by J. S. Bach
I and my students are now exploring Robert Stallman's remarkable new book, "The Well-Tempered Flutist: 101 Pieces for Solo Flute by J. S. Bach." Remarkable and invaluable! Without doubt, this vast collection of pieces for solo flute, drawn from all corners of J. S. Bach's oeuvre, will soon become an indispensable part of the library of every serious flutist. It contains numerous movements from Bach's flute works - such as the Flute Sonatas, the A minor Partita and the Trio Sonatas - all edited by Stallman. However, the vast majority of the 101 pieces are Stallman's superb transcriptions for solo flute of movements from the Well-Tempered Clavier, the French Suites, the English Suites, the Cello Suites, the Harpsichord Partitas, the Violin Sonatas, the "Goldberg" Variations, the Organ Trio Sonatas and the Lute Sonatas. As the title suggests, this book is intended to provide an all-encompassing technical and musical education for flutists, just as J. S. Bach intended his Well-Tempered Clavier to provide an all-encompassing technical and musical education for keyboard players. Stallman's transcriptions may come as a revelation to flutists whose repertoire is limited to the Flute Sonatas and the A minor Solo Partita. Here is a wealth of great music originally conceived for other instruments - all rendered in this volume eminently playable on the flute. In addition to providing a workbook for both students and professionals, Stallman has assembled a collection that will offer years of pleasure to all flutists.Isabelle ChapuisPrincipal Flute, Orchestra of Opera San JoseSenior Lecturer in Flute (retired); School of Music and Dance; San Jose State University
