2004 Volvo XC90
This kit which was the cheapest price I found for both together on the net. Great price and they offered free shipping!Took about 5 days to get the hitch and wiring kit to me...reasonable amount of time, I think.Friday night my husband and I opened the packaging. This is the third hitch/wiring set that we have put on our vehicles. Why pay $300-$400 or more just for labor when it is easy to do yourselves? Volvo wanted $1000 or some nonsense to put it in....we did it ourselves for $170. Our Honda Pilot was a cinch. Literally 30-40 minutes for both the hitch and wiring. Plug and play wiring, hitch went right in. This one....not so much.FIrst off, the hitch sucked to put on. We had to drop the spare, drop the muffler, etc. We thought we had it aligned, but no. The rear most hole was half a hole off. Nice. I called the Manufacturers 800 number on the instruction sheet but since it was Friday night, no answer. (It is now Wednesday and we still haven't received a response btw...) I remembered I had read a review for the same thing happening to someone else with this hitch so I googled the reviews for the 13559 Hitch and sure enough, on Amazon I found other reviewers that had this same issue. We used a vise-grips and mallet and bent it back into place. Check. Instead of taking us 30 mins like the Honda, this took us approx. 3 hours (That is including the beverage break we had while debating what to do about the bent hitch. Ha!). If you receive a non-bent one, it would probably take closer to an hour. Hint- use the tow straps for the muffler...otherwise your arms will get super worn out.***Watch e-trailer.com videos to figure out how to do both the hitch and wiring. Seriously...it walks you through everything step-by-step!!!!! I didn't buy from them but I did use their videos. I literally couldn't have done it without them!!! I brought the iPad right out to the car and watched and paused at every step. ***The wiring was a pain. Well, compared to the plug and play for the Pilot it was a pain. With the video from e-trailers it was a breeze...time consuming, but super easy once you got comfortable pulling the taillights off and finding the wires. FYI...It wasn't the exact same part number or brand in the video, but the same module. Just google 2004 XC90 Trailer Wiring Video and it will pop up. It was like 5:41 minutes or something. I would add a link but I am not sure if that is allowed. I didn't have a wire tester to see which was the left blinker, right, etc... but I did what they said on the video and my lights were perfect.Wiring took me hours...seriously HOURS.... But, I did have to run to Best Buy to their installation dept twice for parts that weren't included in this kit.**** If the seller reads this, PLEASE PLEASE send an extra 2 feet of green wire and a few extra Yellow connectors to future buyers. It is necessary on the XC90 *********In the video it says that this kit will be short on the green wire...and sure enough it was. I first ran to best buy to get the green wire. Came home and realized that now I needed extra connectors for the splice. DANG. Ran back again to Best Buy.The wiring took me hours (including my trips to Best Buy), but the e-trailer video's were awesome and walk you through every step. Without the trips to Best Buy, it probably would have taken me an hour or 2. I had never done the wire splicing stuff before so I was watching everything twice on the videos before actually doing it. If I did a friends XC90 this week, it would probably take me half hour total. I was just super slow and cautious.Hooked up my trailer and it worked first time. Yippee!!Not sure why Volvo didn't account for trailer wiring on the early models. I heard on the 2005 and up they have the plug-in wiring.Bottom line: Good product at good price. Saved alot of money doing it ourselves...and it felt good to do it ourselves. Watch the videos and cross your fingers that you don't get a bent hitch and you can breeze through it.
