Historically Correct
Historically correct however should have sex warning not suitable for all ages. Very intense and emotionally crushing ending. But I do highly recommend

I bought this DVD because I liked the king's banquet song??? Seriously, loved the whole thing but really wish a different ending. Like an A - B version?

Unique
(SPOILERS AHEAD) This is a fascinating film. It almost defies description. The King is gay and decides that a young boy who will eventually become his soldier will also be his lover. This is great until the King is forced to marry and the Queen must produce an heir. But the King is single-mindedly in love with his young soldier and has no interest in women. So, the Solider is pushed into service to father the Queen's child. What neither the Soldier nor Queen anticipate is falling in love. And that's a big problem for the King... even though the Queen eventually conceives a child via the Soldier. That is essentially the story, without giving away the ending. Although it's lit a bit too brightly, it's sumptuous viewing, from the costumes, to the food, to the interiors. And there are a number of hot sex scenes, mainly between the Soldier and the Queen, but definitely at least one between the Soldier and the King, just to make it perfectly clear that indeed these men were lovers. There is a lot of "palace intrigue" and back-stabbing, and lots of great choreographed sword fights. This was clearly an expensive production and bold, considering its subject matter. This is not a great film and one viewing is enough, but there are tons of unique, scary, sexy, shocking moments and on that basis, it rates as entertainment.

A Bittersweet Story of Love
A Bittersweet love triangle that involves the king at the end of the Goryeo Era in Korea who is politically under the thumb of the Yuan Dynasty (Mongolian) in China. The Yuan Dynasty wants to replace him with one of their own since he has no heir. The King has his wife the Queen and the Chief - Hong Lim - of his personal guard called the Kunryongwe. He is in in love with Hong Lim. Hong Lim is in Love with him. The King needs an heir and has no interest in producing one to save the kingdom. He "suggests" heavily that Hong Lim do the deed to give him an heir because he will want his son to look as fair" as Hong. Hong falls in love with the Queen, The Queen falls in love with him. In additional there is much political intrigue and bloodshed. The story is really about Hong-Lim and his conflicts with his loyalty and love of the King and his growing feeling for the Queen. The bittersweet scene is when they look upon each other for the last time. The film is extremely well done and worth having as part of your collection. I give it a five plus.

Wow!
This movie was beautiful and crafted so well I went from renting it to buying it! If it didn't win an award from the film industry in Korea, that would be a shame. Honestly, it was that good. There are some bedroom scenes that might raise a few eyebrows (definitely not for children), but they too were done with consideration and care. I highly recommend it for people who love movies that are finely crafted. I have watched a lot of movies lately, but I can confidently say this one was the best I have seen in a long time.

A story about lust
The characters weren't that intriguing, probably because their relationships seemed empty. The queen & the guard do not really fall in love; they are simply sex-starved, and their relationship doesn't develop beyond physical lust. The king & the guard, for all they've been through together, ultimately had a superficial relationship consisting of lust and obligation. The costumes, settings, & cinematography were good. There are some mildly graphic sex scenes.

Beautiful bittersweet love
This film is my all time favorite of all Korean films. The fictional king who "raises" 36 boys to be his loyal guard is the definition of a pedifile. He chooses Hong to be his right hand and lover. I was a history education major so the plot was especially interesting to me. Jo In Sung is a fine actor in this and his other dramas. He was perfectly cast as loyal Hong. The haunting and beautiful soundtrack with the sad cello solo during their love scenes broke my heart and the Queen's song, a Goryeo folk song, Gashiri is a personal favorite. Most memorable line: "You lead me to love, and I couldn't be more grateful."

Love it!!
If you are sexually prudent or homophobic this is not the film for you. If you are open minded, love beautiful cinematography and lavish settings, not to mention amazing acting then this is the perfect film for you. The story is a fictionalized version about a historic king and his love for his private guard chief. Meanwhile he has a beautiful and lonely Queen who is in the sad position of having to provide an heir to the throne. The King is incapable of having sex with a woman so he orders his lover and the Queen to consummate in order to provide this heir. What ensues leaves the king feeling suspicious, betrayed, and vengeful. The sword fights are amazing, the emotions are raw, the violence and graphics are stunningly believable. I watched this movie online in parts and decided I just have to own it!
