Epic, Beautiful Darkness
This is a daring, impressive work of art: 100pages of monochrome, gritty fantasy. Besides the introduction (a page of beautiful, epic text), those pages average ~one word /page. Adrian Smith relies on his graphic skills to tell the story and does admirably. In short, Mother Earth is defiled and is bound beneath the ground; humanity falls from any grace it may have had. Men enslave other men, and a brutal Tyrant rules over many. Mother Earth's spirit engages Worm, the protagonist, who is tasked to free her [or bring back her power somehow]. Her magic has seeped into vegetation since her demise, so sentient fungi and roots play a role. She transforms or communicates to Worm as a white butterfly too.Adrian Smith's illustrations are generally splendid. If you ever looked into any Warhammer/Games Workshop art (which Adrian has made many) and wished you could immerse yourself in a similar world (this is not part of Warhammer's TM Olde World), this is your chance.Enjoying/understanding this took some concentration and rereading of the prologue, which may turn off some but I found enjoyable. If I understood this correctly, Worm is out to find a key to unlock Mother Earth's chains/cage. Regardless of the low-text approach, I expected to have a better understanding of what to expect in the second volume by the time I reached the end. The number and motivations of the different, conflicting factions is still unclear. Vol. #2 promises to develop this more, which will prompt a reread of this. I plan to purchase the next as soon as it is available.

Rarely does the expectation meet the realization.
2 years ago during Comic Con I was in a room admiring various works of Frank Frazzetta. I stood at each painting mesmerized, intrigued; admiring how each stroke brings the paintings to life.Fast forward two years later, and here I am again at Comic Con 2014, but this time at the Top Cow! panel and a trailer for Chronicles of Hate plays. Once again I am mesmerized, and intrigued. Now here comes the anticipation!Rarely does the expectation meet the realization. The world that Adrian Smith brings to us via his work in Chronicles of Hate is one I do not wish to be a part of. It is dark, terrifying, and cruel. Yet, with each stroke ( digitally ;) ) that Adrian Smith makes; it brings this world to life, and you can't help but be transported to it. Such incredible work in this book!Excellent work and I highly recommend this book to anybody that appreciates the hard work artists bring to comics. Can't wait for Book 2.

Honestly wish it was longer
Was good, but idk... I feel like I had more of a sense of "what the heck is going on? Oh that's what's going on. (Turn page) what the heck is going on? Oh gotcha... (Turn page)" instead of the feeling I'm watching a heavy metal song given ink.

This is a very finely drawn comic with very interesting story, but I'm giving it 4 stars because it is black and white and the printing made the tones very dark. Lots of midtones are lost and so the details in the panels. Aside from this - it was a pleasure reading the story.

Amazing visual novela
Amazing visual novela. Only thing what i dislike is small picture sizes and really dark images. Many things are just invisible.

5 Stars for Art
I honestly don't even know that the story is really reviewable but the art in this book would stand the test of time alongside artists like Albrecht Durher.

most of the story telling is done through Adrian Smith's fantastic black and white illustrations
Very little writing, most of the story telling is done through Adrian Smith's fantastic black and white illustrations. It is interesting on its own but if you are a fan of Adrian Smith then it is a huge collection of amazing artwork as well.

Every page looked like a story board
Every page looked like a story board, a very wonderfully illustrated story board, of an epic yet to be made movie. I can't wait for Vol 2!

4 stars and a great fantasy world
It is dark and takes you into a new realm, which is what you want. But it seems to be shallow in depth of the world. Do not get me wrong, 4 stars and a great fantasy world, but something extra is needed. Extremely overpriced but it is hardback which is great. But the thing about cost is that if it is worth it, you pay it, this is maybe not worth the cost but that does not make it bad, just means it should be about 60% the price. I agree with the other reviewer, there seems to be blurring in some art, which appears to be done on purpose which is baffling, whether I am correct or not, it does seem off for some reason. If you have the cash, you love his work and fantasy a short trip into the unknown and a lifetime of looking over dark images. Get it.

Dark fantasy at its finest.
Visually stunning. A rich and imaginative dark fantasy graphic novel that's low on words and big on atmosphere.
