What is the purpose of that trim switch buttons module wired box

Not sure what you mean by module wired box, but the trim button on the side of the port throttle control raises and lowers the engines (outboards) together. The trim buttons on the front of the controls raises and lowers the outboards individually.

Will this unit replace a 2001 unit ?

Yes but it will require gen 2 cables

I used for 2 mercury 115 efi 2004 and it works great. I am not sure if it works in a 250, maybe crowley marine can tell you, they are very good answeringtechnical questions
