Useful expansion of Garage Lighting via the opener and internet gateway
We bought a new house in February. The builder included a "MyQ" link garage door opener made by LiftMaster. Excellent installation choice, one less thing to buy and install when we move in.Hit the garage door opener, two lights came on and I had to squint to see what was going on out in the garage. The garage door opener lights were dimmed due to the frosted plastic lamp shields on the opener. Making matters worse, the builder included just one (yes "1") garage light overhead. Great. If I want more light, I had to come up with something as an alternative.Searching high and low, the Chamberlin/LiftMaster (all the same company with the same accessories), I saw this remote light switch. Gasping at the $36.00 price tag, I bit the bullet based on reviews and purchased it. Very glad I did. Replaced the wall switch with the LiftMaster switch and programmed it to come on when the garage door opens and closes. Further, the one bulb lamp was partially replaced with two (2) electrical outlet screw in adapter and installed 2 - 4" LED Feit shop lights to illuminate the garage when the door is openedWhat I like:* Three ways to program this switch1) Using the learn function on the garage door opener remote to an open line on the remote,2) Program this switch as a second accessory to the control head/motor (the option I chose)3) Internet Gateway access pairing this switch to the gateway (extra cost with limited benefit)* 300 watts of power control for incandescent or LED lighting* 2.5 Amps for CFL lighting options* You can program up to eight (8) other MyQ components to this switch to expand usefulness* The switch can be operated manually so you do not have to open the door to turn on the garage ceiling lights* The installation instructions were clear - must be sure the hot side (line and load wires) are wired to the switch properly* Per the instruction, you have to wait about 10 minutes for the new switch to activate before programming* Programming was simple - learn button on the switch first. Press the Learn button* Next, press the Learn button on the garage door motor* DONE!* Total installation time - 20 minutes including switch startupCould have been better:* The antenna wire is about 5" long. We had to stuff the wire around the switch and push it back to put the switch plate cover back on* Very tight fit inside my switch box* There is about a 1/2 to 1 second delay from pushing the door opener button and the motor lights coming and the switch activating the lights* This is a one way switch - you cannot use it as a 3 or 4 way switch* The manual light switch must be in the off position before it will automatically work with the opener if used with the garage door opener to activate the switch like meAll told, now I have five (5) lights coming on when we open the garage door, not just the two in the motor unit. One final point - make sure you color balance your light bulbs. The small CFL's twist bulbs are a warm white color and the LED shop lights are a natural white color. Looked weird inside the garage when the lights came on at night. Replacing the CFL bulbs with natural light color and everything looks good at night. If you have the same problem I had and own a MyQ garage door opener, check this switch out. It greatly expands your garage lighting options.*******03/17/2016 - UpdateOne year later. This switch works just as good today as the day installed it. Got use to the manual switching of the garage lights on and off. The only downside to manual control, it doesn't turn on the two garage door motor head lights. They only come on when you open or close the garage door with the remote or wall switch. Not a real negative, but a deficient observation.Would I buy this switch again? Unquestionably -- YES. Now, let's see how long it will last.*******03/29/2017 - UpdateAnother year has passed and this switch continues to work flawlessly.Recently, I purchased a MyQ Internet Gateway to use with my garage door and lights. My wife left home for a few days and forgot to turn the light off in the garage. Needless to say, I was not happy about that. I've wanted to do this upgrade for a while and now I had the reason to do so.Following the directions, added the devices on-line on the Liftmaster site and "bang", this switch paired right up with my new gateway. My light can now be:1) turns on and off remotely through the internet gateway and2) opening and closing of my garage door by either the remote or with the Liftmaster app.Just one more reason to purchase this switch if you have a MyQ Liftmaster/Chamberlain garage door opener.*******08/21/2018 - UpdateAnother year and a half had gone by. Almost 3½ years since I installed this switch. In short -- it works just like the day installed this switch. Still paired up with both the garage door opener and MyQ Internet Gateway. Unlike some internet controlled devices, this one actually remains connected. My recommendation remains unchanged.*******3/07/2019 - Final UpdateReckoning day has arrived.Today this switch failed totally. The internet link to the gateway cannot be established. The motor head to switch cannot be established. Manual operation of this switch fails. Even rebooting (turning off the current at the fuse box and turning it back on after 5 minutes) failed to restart this switch back into full operation. This is true even operating the switch manually. The wife and I talked about it. We agreed not to spend another $40.00 for another switch that may or may not last another four (4) years. We decided to go with a passive Motion Detection switch as a replacement. The life expectancy is not there. When it worked, it worked great. Guess all good things come to an end.Keep in mind the life expectancy of this switch when you purchase. A WiFi switch may do you better at a lower cost.

Replaced an Old X10 System
I should have done this about 5 years ago when I replaced my Genie Door Opener with a Liftmaster.I installed a Leviton X10 Flash Transmitter wired to a dry switch on the door itself and installed a matching Leviton X10 wall switch. I was using this set-up to turn on/off my (4) 60-watt ceiling lights so that the garage would fill with light whenever the door was opened. The system worked great when it worked, but I have had to replace (5) Flash Transmitters and (2) door switches over the past 20 years - total cost of about $300 in replacement parts. The X10 Wall Switch always worked, but they cannot build a transmitter that will last.I started searching for another solution last week when the transmitter started working sporadically again. I had forgotten that Liftmaster offered something like this for the MyQ unit I had installed 5 years ago. WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT! I installed it tonight and it was effortless. I was able to trash all the X10 gear and wiring. I don't know how this differs from X10, but it worked instantly after I installed it.Now whenever the garage door opens, all my garage lights come on. When the door closes, all my garage lights go out at the same time the opener light switches off. I can override with the wall switch manually at any time.If you have a MyQ - this appears to be the way to go (if it lasts)!

Easier Than You Might Think
I bought two of these, and they work great, although I have only used them for a week, so I can't address the issue of longevity. But what I am most pleased with is that this switch doesn't require all the special internet gateway hardware and special aps that the descriptions at Amazon and the Liftmaster web page imply you need to buy.You can pair the garage door remote directly to the switch without all the extra enhancements. If you really want to open the door and turn on other lights with your smart phone or from some computer terminal thousands of miles from your home, you will need to buy the extra gateway hardware, but they aren't necessary for just basic operation. And the pairing process is easy. I use only one button on my remote, which opens the door, which then relays signals to the switches that turn on the porch lights and the rest of the garage lights for 12 minutes in sync with the light on the opener overhead. If you will be working in the garage at night for a few hours, the switches can be activated normally like regular switches, and the lights will stay on until you turn them off. The same thing if you want to leave the porch lights on if you are expecting visitors.

Grossly Inadaquate
Works fine for minimal lighting. For some stupid reason it can only handle 300 Watts. This is only 1/6 of the capacity of a normal switch. A regular light switch is good for up to 1800 Watts. Why on earth would they design a switch that can't adaquately replace an existing switch? I wanted to put the switch in for the basement of my barn where we always forget to turn the lights off. It has 480 watts of flourescent tubes so my great idea won't work.

Great!
I installed 2 of these switches in our garage about a month ago. We are using them to control the front and back lights of the building. They work everytime from my android phone with very little delay.

I've seen the light
So I have a dumb old school liftmaster/chamberlain (Non myq or non myq2) garage door opener.Upon reading the manual, it stated you either needed a myq garage door opener OR internet gateway. Unfortunately if you pair the switch with the internet gateway, you would need your phone to turn the light on and off. I wanted the exterior lights to turn on when the garage was opened. When I tried to pair the light using the learn button on the garage door opener it didn't work. Fortunately when I added the internet gateway, I also replaced the door opener button 888LM. So long story short the manual doesn't mention that it will work, but it does. All you have to do is press the learn button on the door opener button (not the garage door motor), and then press the learn button on the light switch. Now when I open the garage with the remote fob, it turns on the garage exterior lights, which is exactly what I wanted it to do. There is a microsecond delay between the garage opening, and the light coming on but it is not a big deal. We have a detached garage that is in a dark alley so this helps a lot. I know if the garage is opening when we are approaching from a distance. The light will stay on for as long as you have the interior garage light set (it is adjustable between 1 min 30 seconds to 4 mins and 30 seconds). To adjust the light duration (press and hold the lock button for at least 10 seconds until the interior garage door light blinks (one blink is for 90 seconds, two blinks is for 2 mins, 30 seconds, and so on up to 4 mins and 30 seconds). The only down side is that the sensor doesn't know if it is sunny, and will always turn the light on. I have a smart home lighting bridge made by another company, but it doesn't allow you to have the light turn off after as set amount of time from turning on (you can only schedule it to turn on and off at set times, or turn on using the geofence feature). If it continues to operate as expected, I will replace the exterior light under my door to the house.

HomeLink compatible, can work outside
I have a carport not a garage, so no garage door, and I didn't want a motion-sensor on the light switch because that’s hostile to dog-walkers and so on. So I wanted a light I could turn on from the HomeLink garage-door switch in my car. The trouble there are no HomeLink light switches designed for outdoor. But my electrician said “no problem, I’ll just put it in this special plastic outdoor-shield thing.” You can snap it open if you want to use the switch physically. I was worried the substantial plastic would interfere with the remote signal, but no problemo; I can turn it back off with the remote from my kitchen 40 feet away.Only downside is, this isn’t compatible with a 3-way switch setup. So I have to keep the remote right by the back door of the house that’s closest to the carport.
