Great read
I love the JD Robb books. I have read them all at least 3 times each. I enjoy reading a good mystery.

Read it twice, it is better the second time
Gang wars? Eve Dallas usually has more serious cases than gang wars. I was not thrilled at first that this was about gangs. If I had rated it after the first time I read it, I would have given it 4 stars. Fortunately, I decided to read it again before reviewing it, this time reading the hardback (paper version) instead of digital versions (ebook/audio). I seem to pay much better attention to what I am reading when the words are on paper pages than on a digital screen. I pay much better attention to something I have read than to something I have listened to (A bad listener? Perhaps.).It was reading it on paper that I finally figured out what the title meant, the Connections part. It does not leap out at you, the reader, if you read the book too fast. A common meaning of he word connections is family members, usually distantly related. Another meaning is about people one knows through business deals and partnerships. Those both come into play in this novel. Some of the gang members in this novel speak of their gang being their family (usually the most despicable members of the gang, rather than the ones who were dragged into gang life against their wills). But the gangs are not family at all, just bad connections.I never belonged to a gang when I was young (they existed at my high school but they left me alone). No one in my biological family ever became a gang member. I never really thought much about gangs but I can see now why law enforcement has so many concerns about them.Lyle Pickering, an ex member of the Bangers gang, had turned his life around while in prison, something that Eve, as well as others, find very unusual (It is). Yet he is killed by members of his old gang, very sloppily, made to look like an OD. The gang members who did it are morons. As Eve digs into this murder as a favor to Crack, two more even slipped murders are committed. She finds more connections and the case grows bigger. Through much of this novel, Eve is sad, dad at the waste, dad at the damaged lives, sad that so few people who end up in prison are ever rehabilitated. This is a much more mature and adult Eve than we have ever since before. When I read it the second time, that is what but me. She is so much more than she was at the start of the In Death series. And so is Roarke. Even Summerset. Even Baxter! There are some interesting new characters introduced in this novel. I hope we are more of Detective Marley (she who nicknames Roarke "Dreamcake"). I really like the two strippers, Eldeena and her friend Lisa. Maybe they will show up again in a future novel, hopefully not as dead bodies. Lastly, there were so many wonderful lines in this novel, most funny, some thoughtful.Overall, after reading it twice, this was a 5 star for me. I need to go back and dig out those good lines for my quotes from books file. I will definitely be reading this one a third time in the near future and a fourth time farther into the future. Not an all time favorite, but a darn good read, even if Eve is sad.P.S. Some good and memorable lines from APA Cher Reo. I love her character!

Not one of her best
I’m not sure what happened with this book, but it felt too much like a formula and the characters were not endearing in any way. There was no one to root for. Usually I love this series, and have read them all to this point. This is the first one I didn’t care if I completed. I’m almost afraid to read the next one. This used to be one of my favorite series, hoping this was a exception.

much better than the last one...
...but it still felt a little hollow to me.On the up side:Plot was much more interesting this round, though I do wish we’d heard more about Rochelle and Crack along the way. Roarke was much better used, instead of just being Eve’s easily accessed Civilian Financial Researcher/B & E/Electronics Expert. Eve and Roarke also felt more like a team in this book, people who shared reasons for doing what they do, and that deepened the relationship between them. We also learn much more about why Roarke finds helping Eve so satisfying that he gives up a lot of time for his own work to do it, and that was a welcome step forward.Too many times recently Roarke has felt like a convenience for Eve, rather than a necessity. Partly that’s because she no longer has so many flashbacks and nightmares, so the stories are missing those opportunities for him to take care of her and challenge who they are together.Another part is that they’d fallen into a relationship rut—Roarke’s major interactions with Eve had become limited to having sex with her and being helpful in her job, whether by:1. accompanying her to a crime scene2. pitching in with ESS on a criminal’s electronics3. doing research on someone or4. choosing her outfitsbut otherwise they really didn’t interact much. That’s a smaller box than Roarke belongs in, and it’s been limiting who each person is in their marriage. So breaking through that rut in this story was freeing and I hope Robb continues to open them even wider.Humor (or the lack of it) continues to be a problem for me. Eve’s confusion about common English expressions is usually very amusing, but it felt stiff and somewhat contrived here instead. The Peabody/Dallas relationship in this book also didn’t ring for me. Peabody’s constant repetition of “Loose pants” was neither funny nor interesting, and there was none of the usual repartee between Peabody and Dallas. In fact, Peabody as a character is losing what I first liked about her. She seems much less shaped by her Free-ager background, something that had made her special. Then too, her relationship with Dallas lost the hero-worship, which was fine, but now it seems to be losing much of the evident friendship. They don’t talk about anything but work, and their current interactions sound like Dallas’s conversations with any other cop in her unit. That’s a real loss to the series, as Peabody was very human and had much different personality and background than Eve did, making the stories so much more interesting. There also wasn’t much Mavis, just a tiny cameo at the beginning, and that was bad, as Mavis is both Eve’s other female support and comic relief.I wish Robb would do something more with the goddess figure Peabody’s mother gave Eve and why it went to Eve rather than Peabody, as well as expand on Robb’s previous hints that Eve has some form of ESP making her so good at deciphering crime scenes and getting into people’s heads.A better book than the last one by far, with further yet to travel.

As good as always
Eve Dallas is yet to become boring or repetitive. Not to mention How consistent the narrative stays throughout the whole series What in itself is worth applause. The story develops fast and It is entrancing with a gaggle of caracteres that move all over the plot and none ofthem unnecessary, It shows the experience and creativity of its writer. It is another success and Very Well reserves the tive status I give It.

not bad at all, but not as good as the previous books in this series
This time Eve and her team have to find a murderer among gang members.A good story, as always, but some parts put me a bit off, they were told - I would nearly like to say: indifferently. Take Eve's day off right at the beginning in the first chapter: she did this, she "banged" Roarke, let herself be "banged", went to her gym and beat up a droid. Used to be, the actions were narrated in more detail, with humour and an insight into Eve's and Roarke's thoughts, this was just a a one - paragraph summary of a day.On the whole, however, the book did not disappoint, though it did not reach the tension, suspension and pull-the-reader-in as the first few books in this series.

Von j.d.robb geschrieben? Niemals!
