Easy to install - backwards.
Very easy to install, but very easy to install backwards. Since I did not see it prior to wearing out, I put the flap on the wrong side of the stop. A couple of weeks later, the skimmer basket was still empty and my pool looked terrible with stuff floating on top of the pool. Further investigation revealed the culprit. The flap was on the wrong side of the stop and blocking everything from coming in. I reversed it but it kept floating while I tried to install it so I got a five pound weight that held it in place while I screwed the two stainless screws in. Works great now. To be clear, the flap will bend towards the skimmer basket while the pump is on and float up to contact the stop when the pump is off. Picture is with the pump running. Get a stubby Phillips head screwdriver if you don’t have one.

Installation Tip
Never having replaced a skimmer door before on our in-ground pool it would have been nice to receive some specific instructions on how to install this item. Installation (at least for me) was quite easy once I figured out how to do it. Here's MY instructions, hoping they might help. This unit has two basic parts: a large door and a small (about 1 inch) hinge strip. These parts are molded into a single piece so they are NOT something you could or should separate. The hinge strip is installed vertically while the door ends up floating on a more horizontal plane depending on your water level. The hinge strip has several holes in it, apparently for screws. However, it turned out the skimmer door I was replacing (same exact part number) was installed using only one screw, using the hole in the middle of hinge. The hinge strip portion of this unit is installed vertically inside the skimmer housing. It slides down behind very small plastic posts that help hold the unit in place. Once you've positioned this correctly you then install a screw to hold the unit in place. Without the screw the unit will simply float up and out of the slot you've placed it in...so at least one screw is absolutely necessary. My installation only used one screw and it seems to work fine.Removing the old door and hinge strip prior to installing the new unit was as simple as removing the one screw and then lifting up the hinge strip. Lifting up is the key, since the strip sits in a slot behind the above mentioned plastic posts. I'm calling these plastic barrier pieces "posts" for lack of a better term, but they're simply very small pieces that help hold the hinge piece in place. One other final note. If you're new to this (like me) you need to know you do not have to lower the water level in your pool to install the new unit. While that might make this a lot easier I found I was able to do the installation without lowering the water level at all. Yes, it was challenging getting that one screw out and back in while working under water...but it can be done. To put the screw in I ended up taping the screw to the tip of my screw driver, screwing the screw in, and then pulling the screw driver and tape away.Hope that helps! Once I got mine installed it worked great.

Trim them off before installing
What I found was that these were a good quality replacement but required trimming some of the flashing [where the pieces were fit together]. I installed the first one and could not figure out why it would not freely move in the weir. Looking at the other one I saw the plastic edges were protruding. All I did was to take a razor and trim the excess, removed the first one and trimmed that one and reinstalled. Everything is a go now!

The solution
This ended up being perfect. The installation took less than 10 minutes. Going back to the beginning, when the flap came off the only pool supply store in the region wanted to sell me the entire skimmer. I finally figured out the flap was called a weir. Then I became very confused because all the info I had from the pool installation 20 years ago said "Totally Hayward." My old flap measurements didn't match the Hayward dimensions. An 8650-4 ended up being a Pentair product.Installation was easy. The weir and hinge slid into place from the top. I used the old screws. The person who used the paper washers to hold the screws in place was genius. A shorty screw driver is a must. The product is designed so that it is installed with the weir attached to the hinge. It fit perfectly. As I was working with this I discovered my problem was not the pins on the weir, but that the old hinge had warped.

Perfect fit in my Pentair/SwimQuip skimmer
This skimmer weir was an exact fit for my U-3 skimmer. I wasn't sure if this was going to fit because I wasn't sure of the exact model skimmer we have in the pool that came with the house we bought recently. All I knew was that the weir door was missing. As it turned out, this was an exact fit replacement part. The old hinge bracket was still in the skimmer and was attached with one screw in the middle and slid into grooves on each side. The hinge bracket on this assembly was the exact same part as the old one, right down to the SwimQuip "SQ" logo and part number molded in. I was able to install the new part through the skimmer cover by sliding the hinge bracket down between the slots and re-installing the single center screw by feel--you can't see it while you are doing it. I've noticed much better skimming action with this weir installed, since junk can't get out once it goes in.
