I had the pleasure of owning an Airline Marine compass for the last 40 years. The liquid in it finally vanished after all this time. I have always used it on the dash of my older 4 wheeling trucks. It was great, until the fluid vanished. So I looked for a new one. My truck is very old now, I don't drive it as much any more, so I didn't want to spend a lot on a replacement compass. While this is certainly not the quality of the excellent Airline I had, this one is OK on the dash of my 2000 Ram. I can use the compensators to null out the dash and hood and get a fairly accurate heading out of it. You really got to fiddle with them for awhile, but it can be done. Also, the light doesn't work. I had my old Airline wired right into the radio's dimming circuit and that always worked until the light burned out. But this new one didn't even work from the get go. I thought it might be LED and be polarized, so I swapped the wires, to no avail. So I will probably have to find a new bulb for it, which is getting harder these days. Maybe, I'll retrofit it with a cool, colored LED car bulb. I used my old Airline mount for this, which it fit into perfectly, I like the aircraft aluminum design of the Airline mount so much better, it's a cool design when compared against the one shipped with this new compass. For those who complain about it being big, it's meant for big vehicles. Yes, it's going to look out of place in a dinky car. Boats and big trucks and RV's are going to the the appropriate customer for something this big. For older eyes, the larger dial is more legible than the small compasses are. Although, I think the size and style of font and the stenciling of my old Airline was much easier to read than this new one is. In any case, for the price, this is what you're going to get. I didn't expect top drawer, just a good enough compass to get by accurately, and this one fills the bill just fine. At this price, I can afford to replace it with something better later if I so choose, it's no big deal. Considering my Airline was a $100 compass back in the 80's, I think I'm doing OK with this one. If I get 5 to 10 years out of it, I'm doing fine. It'll probably last until I finally have to junk the truck. It works.

Used the non magnetic screws to mount and it was reasonably easy to get it dialed into being a useful device. I did not hook up the light so don't know or care. I put it into my motorhome and it does match the electric compass in the vehicle now. Also matched true magnetic north on my other devices. Good for when there is no sun to cast shadows to get your bearings when everything is turned off! Good for selecting a location for the starlink to see open northern sky.

JJunk! I was initially optimistic that this was going to be a good match for use in my side-by-side. However, after the first drive, which was not very rough the compass dial is permanently tilted and no longer functional. Do not buy!

First one I ordered was great. Worked well and lasted a long time. Light was convenient. All good. Eventually I had to replace it due to a wire getting pulled out (not the fault of the product). But-- the next one I ordered had a big bubble of air inside the compass. While this might not seem like a problem at first, after a couple waves that bubble gets partially under the floating part of the compass, tilting it to one side and keeping it from spinning easily as it should. Figured this was a fluke, returned it, bought another replacement, and encountered the same problem. Grrr. Ended up using the top part of my old bubble-free compass and the bottom portion of the new one to make a single functional one. Does the job again, but this shouldn't have been an issue.

Why did you pick this product vs others?: Great little compass. Does as it describes. Was even surprice it has a built in light.

Works great on our fishing boat as supplemental guidance while trolling. Easy to install and has not dislodge even in wavy/bumpy rides!!

I have mounted it in my Toyota Fortuner, a little big in size but practical, usable and accurate, I understood how to calibrate this device using the given tool and checked with my phone it is very precise. Please make sure you will not keep close to the speakers as it has a magnetic field.

As a fairly novice boatie, I'm keen to have redundancies and backups where possible. This was an easy to install, low-tech and fairly cheap option to mount on the console to give me peace of mind. I've checked it against the Garmin echomap, and my cheap GPS speedo gauge, and it's reading the same, so it's money well spent. I haven't wired up the lights as yet, and I don't know if I will, but it's only two wires, so it's easy if I do. Instructions are straight forward to install and it sits nice and sturdy when mounted. I'm happy with it.
