Hazari Prasad (Anupam Kher) is a miser who dreams of finding a rich young woman for his only son, Raja (Aamir Khan), to marry. However, Raja is a spendthrift who is only interested in spending his father's money on wild parties. One day as Raja is walking to his college, a passing jeep douses him with mud and the rude response of the beautiful Madhu (Madhuri Dixit) who is driving enrages Raja. He tricks Madhu into thinking that he is blind and then mocks her when the truth is revealed. The two quickly become enemies and play different pranks on each other: Raja causes Madhu to trip during a dance rehearsal, and she forces him into a fight with the school's champion boxer Shakti (Adi Irani)(which Raja wins).Meanwhile, Hazari is looking for a bride with a large dowry for Raja, only to find that his involvement in the waste paper business makes his son a less than stellar marriage prospect. While visiting a lavish hotel, Hazari accidentally runs into a rich man, Mr. Mehra, who has only one daughter. Hazari hires actors to pretend to be his staff and gives beggars large quantities of counterfeit money to masquerade as a wealthy industrialist. He quickly becomes friends with Mr. Mehra and the two agree to marry their children to each other. However, when Raja meets his prospective bride, she turns out to be Madhu and the two refuse to consider the possibility of marriage.

Happy ending...eventually
if I had known this had been a melodrama and not a "corny 80s romantic comedy" as one reviewer described it, I would have been up for the long, long, ride full of typical Bollywood plot features. This movie was at times ridiculous, frustrating, and unsettling. NOT a feel good romantic comedy. - user's daughter, long time bollywood fan. . . but not of this one.

Magical Love Story
Magical love story on the order of those love stories I love from Hrithrik Roshan. Sacrifical love story far above other love stories I have seen from Bollywood. Aamir Khan is magical!

Aamir! Madhuri!
Okay, it's corny. It's also addictive. The music and dancing is wonderful, and it's a treat to see a young Aamir and a young Madhuri together...they are both so beautiful and believable. The plot goes from silly to serious, way over the top, but if you are a fan, you won't get tired of watching it.

My earliest DVD of a Bollywood film, and I truly love the chemistry of Aamir Khan and Madhuri Dixit
I first discover both the amazing talent of Aamir Khan and the appeal of Bollywood films when I first saw "Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India" which is a fantastic film from 2003. And then, it wasn't long before a saw a song video of the dance talent and beauty of Madhuri Dixit from the film "Sailaab" from 1990. The song was call "Humko Aaj Kal Hai".I bought "Dil" almost right away when I knew these two beautiful people were together in the same film. I started to hang around Indian video stores alot as I started to learn more about Bollywood, and I have discovered so many beautiful Bollywood actresses. Before I knew it, I was watching Bollywood films and/or song/video collections from Bollywood nearly every day for many years. This film isn't in the best for sound or video quality, so I had to learn to look passed that and enjoy the beautiful people and to tolerate having to read English sub-titles, and I had to allow myself to get totally engrossed into a story that, in many cases, is nearly three hours long. But, as this story goes, Raja (Aamir Khan) lives a poor lifestyle along with his dad, Hazari Prasad (Anapam Kher) and mom. He attends college where he has several run-ins with wealthy fellow-collegian, Madhu Mehra (Madhuri Dixit). Matters escalate to such an extent that she accuses him of sexually molesting her. When his dad comes to know, he decides to seize this chance to get rich quickly, masquerades as a wealthy businessman, approaches Mr. Mehra, and arranges for their children to get married. Murphy's law prevails at the time of the engagement - changing everyone's lives forever.Hazari Prasad is a waste-material vendor, who lives with his young son, Raja, who studies at a Prestigious College and his wife. Hazari is a miser who values money the most and always had big dreams of getting his son married to a rich-man daughter; so that he can demand huge sums of money as dowry. His encounters lead him to meet up with wealthy Mr. Mehra; and he decides to masquerade as a wealthy industrialist to fool Mehra, luck favors him and he does succeed in his endeavor, and the engagement of Raja and Madhu is set. But Raja had many upping at the college with Madhu until she accuse him of sexually molesting her, an angry Raja carried off Madhu to make her realize what she had done to him and both end up falling in love and the engagement is celebrated with pomp and ceremony only to break off when Mehra exposes Hazari, publicly humiliates him and cancel the engagement. It is at this point Hazari and Mehra will realize how they will have to pay a heavy price for there children's happiness. With all the flaws this DVD has, it is still a worthy story. And I have about a hundred Bollywood DVD's, and about 25 Bollywood Blu-ray (which look and sound phenomenal! And I have a personal love for over 40 different Bollywood actresses. I keep an eye out for new blu-ray releases of Bollywood films with a hope that some of my older DVD favorites can be upgraded in quality.

Lagaan *****2. Fanaa *****3. Mann *****4. The Rising *****5.
