Better than Dove - a gentle moisturizing soap that's great for eczema
I found Luxo Banho Milk Creme soap after a long search for a gentle soap to replace the new Dove for the treatment of eczema. Luxo is by far the best soap we have used - the milk-rich, emollient formula is very mild, cleans well, leaves skin fresh and gently moisturized. We buy the 12.5 oz bar - it is quite large but lasts about two months for a family of five and is less expensive overall than buying the smaller bars.As a reference, the ingredients in Luxo Bahno soap in the yellow/ purple packaging (previously sold in the US) are as follows: vegetable base (sodium palmate and sodium cocoate), glycerine, sweet almond oil, powdered milk, water, tetra sodium EDTAm, palm acid, titanium dioxide. It is manufactured in Europe and imported to the US by the Kala Corporation. It is mildly scented but has no added fragrance - it smells so nice I store it in my linen closet.UPDATE: As of May 2016 the Luxo Bahno soap being shipped directly from Portugal by the seller Best of Portugal is the "Classic Ach.Brito" one in the traditional white and blue European packaging. The ingredients differ from the US-distributed one as follows: sodium palmate, aqua, sodium palm kernelelate, palm acid, palm kernel acid, sodium chloride, parfum (fragrance), sweet almond oil, glycerin, tetrasodium EDTA, tetrasodium etidronate, CI 77891 (titanium dioxide), sodium Thiosulfate, Linalool, Limonene, Geraniol, Citronellol. This one does not contain powdered milk. This one has a wonderful fragrance and we haven't had issues with it even with sensitive skin - we actually prefer it to the US version distributed by Kala and are glad it's being offered again on amazon.WHY LUXO BAHNO IS BETTER THAN THE NEW DOVEWhy did we switch from Dove? Because Dove's formula changed and its detergent base is now triggering eczema-like symptoms is some people, including us.Our daughter started suffering from either dermatitis or eczema when she was a year old - just a red bumpy rash - and Dove Bar Soap, Sensitive Skin Unscented, 4 Ounce, 16 Count was recommended by the pediatrician, pediatric dermatologist, and allergist. Unfortunately, they didn't know the manufacturer had changed the product formula. We really wish they had - it would have saved her a year of terrible itching Dove's new formula caused.A change in baby formula to Similac Expert Care Alimentum Infant Formula with Iron, Powder, 1 Pound (Pack of 6) (Packaging May Vary) resulted in dramatic improvement after a milk allergy was diagnosed. However, small raised red patches and intense itching that caused frantic scratching to the point of bleeding soon became major issues; we visited a second dermatologist - atypical eczema was diagnosed.Treatment until had been warm daily baths and unscented Dove, along with hydrocortisone 1% on spots and Cetaphil Fragrance Free Moisturizing Cream, 16 Ounce Jars (Pack of 3) cream all over. Children's Zyrtec did not seem to alleviate the itching, although it did help her sleep. A prescription for Calcitrene did not help either. Only a physical barrier - footed PJs with both zippers and snaps, kept her from picking at her skin constantly.Quite by accident I used unscented Dove. I suddenly found myself having intense itching as well. Could it be that my daughter was allergic to Dove? It did make sense as Dove was used directly on her exposed areas, arms and torso, and she had her most intense and frantic itching episodes after her bath. We discontinued Dove immediately and her intense itching subsided overnight. What I didn't understand was why I was suddenly was allergic to the new bars. After doing some research it turns out that Dove has discontinued the old Dove unscented bar along with the Dove for sensitive skin (the one with sweet almond oil - itself an allergen) and combined them into one bar, Dove Unscented for Sensitive Skin. In so doing, it's changed its main surfuctant and other ingredients - in other words, the Dove doctors have been recommending for years is no longer the same product. An online search revealed complaints about itchiness and the new Dove. One website site in particular on the treatment of eczema has an enormous amount of information on detergents, soap and their effects on eczema - especially the change in Dove soap. It no longer recommends it for eczema and instead, after trying dozens of soaps, recommends Luxo Banho Milk Creme Bar Soap, 12.5 oz . Please see the comments section for more information.Interestingly, itchiness and redness with the new formulation was brought up by a customer in Dove's own website and no solution is given other than Customer Service's phone number.I've also found some mentions of another Dove ingredient, "Sodium tallowate" - tallow, sometimes derived from cattle - as sometimes causing a reaction in people with milk allergies, causing flare ups in acne and eczema. Whether this too caused an allergic reaction in our daughter, I don't know. We thought our case was isolated. However, it's possible that the skin problems related to the new Dove may be more widespread. I hope this information helps as this change was done quietly by the manufacturer. We also found sweet almond oil in the Cetaphil cream she was prescribed - an allergen for anyone with a tree nut allergy. We stopped using it later and the remaining red raised patches she had also disappeared, even though my daughter is not allergic to sweet almond oil (it must have been another ingredient in it). Other changes that were recommended including a change to Tide HE Liquid Laundry Detergent, Free and Gentle, 100 Fl Oz - it didn't help my daughter but it healed my red, cracked hands, the result of doing laundry 2-3x a day with All Liquid Laundry Detergent, Free & Clear, 50 oz, 32 loads .Granted, individual reactions to products vary but the new ingredients in unscented Dove may be causing allergies rather than helping them. None of the three doctors consulted knew of the formula change in Dove nor realized that the "Dove + cetaphil" combo they were recommending were causing the very symptoms (itching and rash) they were trying to treat. It's possible parents may just assume it's ongoing eczema, just like they did. It may not be.WHY DETERGENT-BASED (SULFATE) SOAPS SHOULD BE AVOIDEDAs noted in my review above the allergen that caused my daughter's eczema was detergent - in this case, the surfuctants in Dove. We then found out that exposure to other sulfates, such as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (the main ingredient in Johnson's Baby Bath Head to Toe Baby Wash) are huge triggers for eczema in general - not just my child (why don't doctors know this?!). They may also contribute to scalp eczema - important to know as most shampoos contain SLS.The solution is simple - avoid anything with detergents and/ or sulfates and switch mostly to soap-based products. These are way milder than what we've been led to believe by advertising. Please see comments section for alternatives to Dove and baby washes with SLS.

I can't use regular soap anymore!
I was gifted a few bars of Luxo Banho a few years ago and. I needed to find more, I found Francisco and found a new friend from Portugal as well. Since this soap is the real deal, I only need a few bars a year. Stellar product and a great Seller!

too big
This is my second review on this bar of soap. It's good soap and smells great but it's too big. I tried cutting it in half and couldn't do it. I still struggle with holding the soap in the shower. I gave it 2 stars because it's TOO BIG. Great for giant people with giant hands. It will last me for 5 years. Honestly. What were they thinking.

Revised review...
The product I ordered is a very large, white, oval bar of LUXHO BANHO CREME OVAL SOAP, not what is displayed above. The photo of the soap at the time I ordered was the signature white, purple and yellow package with the flower in the center, and it's a whole different scent , not the same soap as pictured above this smells awful compared to what I remember using for 27 years, I STAND by the review of something I used everyday for 27 years! The one you sent me is not the same soap at all..

Strongly recommend for stubborn eczema
We have been using this soap for a few weeks now, and my daughter's eczema finally seems to be under control. We have tried multiple sensitive skin and fragrance free bathing products and this soap is heads above anything else we've tried. So happy we found this product! Working so well, I just bought two more bars.
