Can you use this motor vertically?

I would say no. Reason is, there is nothing that "locks" the spit rod into the motor. With the motor at the top, the rod would fall out, and if it was at the bottom, all the juices would run into the motor.

What is the weight capacity for the motor and rod?

Holds up to 20 pounds capacity.
