The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Collection Volume Two

Great, complete and restored SHERLOCK HOLMES radio shows from the 1940s!
This review would be for any of the three volume sets of the Basil Rathbone - Nigel Bruce SHERLOCK HOLMES radio show series that from 1939 through 1946. Sadly, many of these shows are lost, although some of the "lost" ones are not available due to issues with the Edith Meiser Estate, etc. Many of us Sherlock Holmes fans would love to hear the five-episode "Hound of the Baskervilles" story from about 1941 for example. Some old-time radio fans have told me that poor copies of one or two of the episodes do exist, but I've yet to hear them. While it's sad that so many of the shows are unavailable, it's good that we have these in very good condition to listen to and enjoy with our families and friends.A good story never goes out of the style and wartime references may "date" the shows - as they do many of the WWII-era movies, but it's good that younger listeners may question and wonder what the world was like when my parents (or perhaps your grandparents) were young. These shows are great, and we can only hope that more shows can be made available and restored!

whole series is great
I'm a fan of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, so it doesn't bother me at all that most of these stories were not written by Conan Doyle. The stories are pretty good quality, the acting is good, and listening to it during my commute is a pleasant way to travel. It is nice that they left the commercials for Petri Wine in place. They are so old fashioned and innocent! Why by Petri wine? Because its "good wine." That's all. They found some of the original actors and directors of the show to give color commentary. This is quite interesting oral history. In my old car, the sound quality is such that I miss a few words here and there. But its from very old tapes, I presume, so we're lucky to hear them at all.I have also enjoyed many other readings of original Conan Doyle stories, My favorite ishttp://www.amazon.com/Sherlock-Holmes-Baker-Street-Dozen/dp/1598879162/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372015745&sr=1-1&keywords=a+bakers+street+dozen

Fun!
Love these CDs. I listen to them a lot. I have all of them 1, 2 and 3. The Petri commercials get old after hearing them over and over but it's Ok.

The Nw Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Volume 2
I am a great fan of Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce and their portrayals of Holmes and Watson respectively. If you are also, then you will want to have this CD. It includes the obviously dated commercials for Petri wine and also includes interesting reminiscences of individuals who were involved in those radio productions of 1945-46. The anthology presented here is entertaining and represents adaptations of original Conan Doyle stories abbreviated and usually re-titled for radio. Like the other programs in this CD series, this CD is worth buying if you are a fan of old time radio and of the Rathbone-Bruce interpretations of Holmes and Watson.

These are better as they have a few of the original show's ...
Second set of the"New" Adventures I have purchased. These are better as they have a few of the original show's announcers, writer/director types doing a preliminary lead in to the episode before the oridnary Dr. Watson lead in. Some interesting behind the scenes insights from them on various things.Good quality, clean sound, nice cases to protect the discs... cardboard, but not overly tight and no glue to be found. Enjoy!

Riveting listening!
Generally a refreshing and beautiful treatment of Conan Doyle's works, these delightful recordings preserve the essence of the author's intent chiefly through the presence of the iconic actors (Rathbone and Bruce) who also brought the characters to the screen. Rathbone's voice and Bruce's endearing mannerisms represent the gold standard of the Holmes and Watson team.

Is there a Collection Volumeone?
I give these a 3 rateing because the first cd dose not have the full story of [THE Case of the Out of Date Murder.]The Waltz of Death had the whole story so I'm not sure if this collection is just that way.The cd's come in a small cardborad box. Another thing is the wine commercials, after just one cd I wanted a bottle of wine!Well I bought this for a trip and hope to enjoy the rest of the collection.I will give an update after the trip.

I have really enjoyed this series
I have really enjoyed this series. I drive a great deal and also work in my shop a lot. These DVDs are sometimes my best friends. The talent that these actors is unparralleled, it is their ability to transport someone into another era of time and another country simply by voice. I look forward to listening to these for many more times.

Poor storylines, outdated production and annoying adverts
I bought this series expecting the same outstanding quality of storyline, production and acting enjoyed in the immaculate films. To say that I was disappointed on the first two points is an understatement. The acting is as good as ever, although Bruce does tend to mumble incoherently at times. The storylines are weak and the production is annoying. The longer storylines and accessible clues of the films are displaced by extremely short episodes, few decent clues and 'surprise' solutions. The guilty party can sometimes be identified with ridiculous ease by a process of elimination from the sparse number of characters, rather than Holmesian logic. As for the quality of production, we should accept that tastes have changed, but 'dramatic' bursts of organ music and endlessly repeated wine adverts could surely be edited out completely to spare the cringing and annoyance of a modern audience.

Made up mostly of adverts rather than story. A waste of time. Threw it in the bin
one short story and twenty adverts - extremely disappointing
