If you use a standard oil or water block type stone and are used to them and are consistent at holding the correct angle, by all means stick with them. If you like consistency in angle, sharpness, and speeding up the sharpening process with no loss but a gain in quality for your blades, buy the Lansky system. There are a quite a few in which to choose so you'll have no problem suiting your needs. Yes I sound like an advertiser or that I'm paid to say these upbeat things. Not so. I appreciate a good product from a good company.

Does exactly what you want it to do if you have the Lansky Set
If you have the Lansky knife sharpening set you will love this. Exactly what it says it will do. only thing i know about it is not to over tighten. it can break at the connection to the rod that you use to guide it.

I think it's a good piece of equipment, but I'm still on a learning curve!
I'm glad I purchased it. It's giving me good results. I had no prior experience and I'm definitely not an expert, but I can make a few observations about what I have found: - It took me several tries and several hours before I began to produce a good edge. There is some real technique involved. - I found the frame/holder to be difficult to grasp, and I get better results when I gently clamp the "handle" into a vise. - I get better results when I use one hand on the stone, and the other to steady the guide rod (it tends to flop around in its guide slot) - Make sure the guide rod thumb screw doesn't come loose while you're sharpening. The angle changes and messes everything up. - Sometimes I get an amazing (almost scary) edge and think I finally got it figured out. Then the next one won't cut a banana skin!

Not sure what is going on with Lansky these day, The stone break real easy and the clamp threads stripped out, I still think Lansky is one of the best systems for a razors edge, Just not the same quality as they were in the 80's and 90's.
