While on your horse hold down LB to bring up the item wheel (keep holding it until you find what you want to use). Use RT to cycle over to horse items (the 3rd group of items). Use your L-thumbstick to select the food and release LB.

Is free roam in story mode limited?

Once you're done with the intro, that takes a 2-4 hours to complete depending on the player, and you get to the first main camp you can basically go anywhere but Armadillo which opens up at the endgame.

Is there a difference between rated m and rated 18 on the cover?

Yes. M IS categorized as 17 and up. 18 is 18 and up. Now what has to be in a game to make that distinction? I have no idea.
