VAUGHAN Ball Pein Hammer, 16 Oz, Striking Tool, Assembled in the USA

Whenever possible, I try to buy American - with the proviso that the quality is there. Recently I needed to buy and replace metal working hammers - two ball pein in different sizes, cross pein, and a heavy mallet. (Sometimes these are called blacksmith, machinist or engineer hammers - all mean the same thing in this context). I had ordered an 8oz Craftsman hoping to match a vintage hammer I had restored, but truly the quality was really lacking. Without disparaging other brands, let's say I looked at pretty much everything made in the USA but had forgotten about Vaughan. The quality available was so poor, I turned to German options like Gedore or Stahwille, but they were 3x more expensive. Then I remembered this company, and have since purchased several hammers. Vaughan is now my first choice go-to for most types of hammers. Kudos to them for standing tall on quality! Specifically, the heads are forged with the correct hardness for each type. Particularly the ball heads are just that: spherically shaped. Cheaper hammers have a non-spherical shape, and anyone who really does metal work or restoration knows this is really important. They are professionally finished including any grinding, deburring, sanding and polishing - as well as their signature blue paint and a final coat of clear finish - I'd guess shellac. This greatly reduces any risk of rusting. The handles are top quality tight and straight grained hickory and correctly fitted to the head. Everything is balanced, and they are a pleasure to use!

For $14.24 I got an amazing 8 oz. ball pein hammer with high carbon steel and solid hickory handle. The size, weight, balance, shape, and feel are ideal. I bought it to use and keep for a lifetime. This is the kind of hand tool that you hand down to your kids someday.

Made in the USA and real hickory, mine has really straight grain. Way too many stickers. I would like to have Vaughan insignia cast in the head so we will know who made it 100 years ago. I like hammers.

Great tool

Typically I prefer to hand select one from the store but it seems as is no one locally has this size. The grain orientation isn’t exactly great the machining is a little rough (under the paint) compared to my other Vaughan hammers and the sticker is way off to the side but other than that it’ll last me a life time I’m sure. I’m just trying to pick it apart really All I’m saying is if this was on the shelf it wouldn’t be my first choice but for 13 bucks I can’t complain much. Also I really wish they would stamp the size in not laser etch it. Seems much cheaper and if my kids ever try to restore one of my old hammers they won’t know if it’s harbor freight China or real deal America steel.

Nice hammer. Comfortable to grip, looks nice, made in USA. Feels like it will last a nice, long while. Will buy Vaughan made in USA products again in the future.

Wanted a replacement ball pein hammer for a while, local hardware stores didn't carry them, so this was a great buy for me. Nice looking, quick delivery, just what i needed.

Just the size I was looking for. Made in the USA as labels shown. In the specifications it said made in China. Nothing on the hammer suggests China. Good balance and pleased with the quality. The only negative is the 5 minutes to remove labels and glue from labels. Highly recommended if looking for small hammer.
