Great BUT - When plugged in to a USB port, it often blocks the ports on both sides.
This thumb drive rocks. It has massive storage capacity. It's fast. It has a nice protective cap which snaps onto the opposite end during use. I love it. At least until I try to plug another USB drive into a port right next to this one. This drive overlaps the ports on both sides by at least half. It is the width of two standard thumb drives, making it a pain to attach in tight spaces. The only workaround I've found is to use a short USB extension cable between this drive and the port. If you can live with that limitation, it's a really great drive.[UPDATE]I've been using this drive for a couple of months now, so I thought I'd give an update. Many folks are mentioning that the cap loses its ability to stay on after a short while. Mine still stays on, but it is definitely looser than it was at the beginning. When it first started losing its grip a bit, (@ ~3 weeks) I stopped snapping it onto the rear of the thumb drive, hoping that change would extend the life of the cap. Since I stopped snapping it onto the rear of the drive, it seems to be staying the same, which is only slightly loose. Who knows how long this will last. So I recommend that you still keep in mind that the cap getting loose is still a common issue. The other negative is that I'm still finding the width of the thumb drive to be annoying, particularly on my Surface Book 2 laptop. If I plug it directly into the laptop, it covers half of the port next to it. To work around this issue, I use a short extension cable. Honestly, it looks pretty stupid having this fat thumb drive laying on the desk next to the laptop with a little cable running to the port.Regarding the performance: Like every other thumb drive, it varies greatly. If copying large files to the drive from a really fast motherboard-mounted NVMe SSD, it's crazy fast. When copying thousands of tiny files from the same SSD drive, the speed drops substantially. If you are copying a ton of small files from a mechanical drive, your hope of getting anything close to high speeds is pretty much eliminated. I have above average hardware and I've seen copy speeds ranging from 240+MBs to 18MBs depending on the source drive, the machine specs, the file sizes, and myriad other factors. Keep in mind that the widely varying speed isn't a problem that is specific to this drive. That's been the case with every other thumb drive I've tried, as well. Overall, this drive has been the fastest or second fastest in fairly equivalent file copy comparisons I've performed. As an example, I have attached a picture of the copy speed going from a microSD card to this 512GB thumb drive using my Surface Book 2. You can see from the copy speed, that the microSD is the limiting factor in this example. It is rated for 90MBs read speed.Bottom line: After a couple months of using it, I'm still pretty happy with this drive. The annoyances aren't bad enough to take away a whole star, but if I could rate it 4 1/2 stars, I would.

Super small, light weight, mobile and fast!
Patriot Memory Supersonic Magnum 128 GB Flash Drive. Ultra small, light, mobile, and no moving parts. For maximum mobility. My set up is as follows:HP folio 13 ultra thin notebook. Light weight, gets the job done admirably.Iomega eGo Portable Hard Drive, SuperSpeed USB 3.0, 1TB, Ruby Red. My main storage drive for over one year, but it is nearly full. For that reason, I will switch it from primary to backup.Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1.5 TB USB 3.0 Ultra-Portable External Hard Drive. Bought a larger drive recently, but haven't fully implemented it. My plan is to make this my main storage drive, because it has greater capacity than the eGo, and switch eGo to backup drive. Non-essential elements will not be backed up, due to storage limitations on the eGo.Patriot Memory Supersonic Magnum 128 GB Flash Drive. Ultra small, light, mobile, and no moving parts. For maximum mobility.StarTech 6-Feet SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Extension Cable. For use with the Patriot flash drive.Uspeed USB 3.0 7 Port Hub with 3ft USB 3.0 Cable and Power Adapter. Connects my external storage devices. I do not need 7 ports, but chose this drive over a 4 port because the ports are too close together. I use ports 1, 3, 5, and 7. The 7 port hub is very light weight.Anker® Astro3 10000mAh Multi-voltage 5V / 9V / 12V 2A External Battery Pack. I travel to many places with occasional power outages. Whenever I use the USB 3 hub, I plug it into the Anker Astro3, and plug the Anker into the wall. IMPORTANT: The 7 port hub has a 12 Volt input, which works with this Anker. Most hubs are 5 Volts, and the connections to the spare battery pack do NOT work. Use this recommended combination for maximum reliability and functionality!Instapark MP3450E 13,500 mAh External Battery Pack. I use this battery pack as backup for my laptop. The laptop battery lasts about 4 hours; the Instapark adds about another three to four hours of power. For even more juice, you can add a second battery to the Instapark pack, doubling the capacity to 27,000 mAh. I have not done this, simply because I don't need so much back up power and do not want to double the battery weight.C. Crane US3 Super USB Wifi Antenna 3. Long range, high power USB wifi antenna. When I stay in hotels, I normally choose the room farthest from the reception, and therefore farthest from the wifi router. This antenna makes fast wifi connection possible.Tripp Lite U026-016 USB2.0 16-Feet Certified Active Extension Cable. This cable has a built-in signal amplifier, for best results with USB modems & wifi antennas.Otherwise, I use a fast Microsoft mouse, with wired USB connection, and a portable Philips speaker.I have been living in different places around the world for 17 years, and the above is what my mobile office suite has evolved into. My current abode is in a boat-only access area, with power outages more frequent than I'd like during the rainy season. I have reliable backups on all my data, in case of loss or damage. I have a 4G USB modem from the local phone company, which is powered from my notebook. I have about seven hours of power supply; so far, the most I've needed has been five... and everything worked like a charm.

Save your money
This thing is built quite solidly and the cap can attach to the end so you don't loose it. Based on the description you would think that this is actually fast. Unfortunately the write speed and access times are horrible. Definitely misleading. Not useful as a boot drive or to run virtual machine images off of. Could be useful for storing media files since the read speeds are ok. If you are actually looking for fast portable storage go with the Corsair Flash Voyager GTX 256GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive (CMFVYGTX3B-256GB)

Very fast, huge storage, a bit large
There is only one real competitor for this flash drive if you are looking for usb 3.0 and 128gb of storage, and that is a kingston drive that is about $50 more. This kingston drive also comes in at 256gb, but costs around $450 at the moment and is certainly not worth it.This drive is study, insanely fast on USB 3.0, and well priced. However, it is somewhat of an eyesore due to its coloring and huge size. The huge size also makes it difficult to work with on laptops. On one side of my retina macbook it blocks one of two thunderbolt ports, and on the other it fits awkwardly due to the case. This is an issue I've never had with a flash drive, but I can look past that for the huge storage and incredible speed.Long story short, the only downsize of this flash drive is the size. If you want a smaller one, there are more expensive options that honestly aren't worth it at the moment. Until there's a smaller flash drive with identical specs, this is the way to go.

and I always got more than the advertised speeds pretty consistently all the time with the previous generation Patriot ...
I am a long time user of Patriot Magnum series USB pens. I found the Patriot Magnum series to be among the fastest drives on the market when compared to other performance drives. I already own a draw full of competing USB drives including the last three generations of these Patriot Magnum series pens in different sizes which I bought over the last 5 years or so. The previous generation Magnum series pens are fast and advertise read/write speeds of 200MB/s read and 120MB/s write - see the below link, and I always got more than the advertised speeds pretty consistently all the time with the previous generation Patriot pens.https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004ZNA3UA/ref=twister_B01DEY3J8I?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1Anyway I needed a bigger drive and came to Amazon looking for the latest Magnum series pen, unfortunately I couldn't find a 512GB in this Magnum series, so I bought this 256GB model. Patriot do another model called the Patriot "Mega" Series which is more value for money and are available in various sizes including 512gb, however it is a value series model and is a lot slower in comparison to this performance series Magnum drive, and I wanted the fastest write speeds possible. So here's a summary of the pros and cons of this 256gb Magnum drive.Pros:- Ridiculously fast write speeds in real life use, over twice as fast than the previous generation which I linked above. I get Initial bursts of around 450MB/s Writes and it settles down at around 305MB/s Write, consistently on large file transfers. This is slightly above the advertised speeds. I didn't do any real life Read speed tests, as Read speeds are generally always faster than writes, and I primarily use my pen drives to copy over large video files from my PC to the USB pen to watch on a media player box.- Metal casing. Solid build quality.- Lanyard - can attached it to a key ring and carry it around.- Doesn't get too hot, metal housing acts as a heat spreader.Cons:- Slightly larger than "traditional" usb pens - but isn't an issue if your PC has enough space to accommodate 2 usb pens plugged in at the same time.- Slightly slower than competing performance drives when you are using it to write a high volume of very small file sizes. If anyone asks me to recommend them the fastest USB pen drive, first choice is this Patriot Magnum series, second choice is the Kingston HyperX Savage. Sorry for the long review.
