Perspective compression effect that draws even greater attention to subjects This super performance (SP) tele-zoom has everything to satisfy the desires of nature or sport photographers. Distant and elusive wildlife, birding, team sports, motorsports and surveillance are just a few of the photographic conditions that demand both zoom versatility and extreme telephoto power. APS-C-sensor photographers will enjoy super-telephoto magnification, with a picture angle range approximating a 310-775mm lens on a 35mm film or full-frame DSLR. Featuring LD (Low Dispersion Glass) to combat chromatic aberrations and an Internal Focus mechanism that maintains a fixed barrel length when focusing, the SP 200-500mm provides high telephoto magnification accompanied by the sought-after perspective compression effect that draws even greater attention to subjects. The extreme tele-end lets you bring your far away subjects up close and allows you to capture the images in a frame-filling format. The power to bring your subject nearer makes for interesting image compositions, and extends the photographic and creative horizon substantially. Furthermore, the lens offers fantastic image quality thanks to the application of modern design principles and high-quality glass. The SP 200-500mm is an easy choice for outdoor enthusiasts who often must hike great distances with their gear, in search of their subjects. Tamron lenses bearing the SP designation feature impressive and innovative designs Super Performance for Discriminating Shooters (SP)Tamron SP (Super Performance) series is a line of ultra-high-performance lenses designed and manufactured to the exacting specifications demanded by professionals and others who require the highest possible image quality. In creating SP lenses Tamron’s optical designers put their foremost priority on achieving superior performance parameters—they are all designed to a higher standard.Di LensesTamron Di lenses are performance optimised for digital SLR cameras and usable with DSLRs featuring sensors commonly referred to as APS-C, measuring approximately 24mm x 16mm, as well as larger full frame (36mm x 24mm) sensors and 35mm film SLRs. Internal Focusing System (IF)Internal focusing (IF) provides numerous practical benefits to photographers, including a non-rotating front filter ring that facilitates the positioning of polarising and graduated filters, and more predictable handling as the lens length does not change during focusing. Crucially, Tamron’s Internal Focusing (IF) system provides a close minimum focusing distance (MFD) throughout its entire focusing range. Also, IF improves optical performance by minimising illumination loss at the corners of the image field, and helps to suppress other aberrations that become more troublesome at different focusing positions.FEC (Filter Effect Control) Function Enhances Operational Ease of Polarising Filter UseThe Filter Effect Control is designed to rotate the filter to the desired position while the hood is attached. This is accomplished by turning the FEC ring that in turn rotates the portion of the filter mount where the filter is mounted. Low dispersion glass reduces chromatic aberration Low Dispersion (LD) Glass for Greater Lens SharpnessLow dispersion (LD) glass elements in a lens help reduce chromatic aberration, i.e. the tendency of light of different colours to come to different points of focus at the image plane. Chromatic aberration reduces the sharpness of an image, but glass with an extremely low dispersion index, has less of a tendency to separate (diffract) a ray of light into a rainbow of colours. This characteristic allows the lens designer to effectively compensate for chromatic aberration at the centre of the field (on axis), a particular problem at long focal lengths (the telephoto end of the zoom range), and for lateral chromatic aberration (towards the edges of the field) that often occurs at short focal lengths (the wide-angle end of the zoom range.)

Used Item
This was a used item. Takes great photos. Only problem ---The screws in the lens mount were lose and I think one is striped. Should have been a little cheaper because of this. For the price I had to keep it. I will get it repaired.

Mandy mo. Tamron lens
This lense is amazing. I was a little unsure how good this lens really was. The equivalent of Nikon, costs £5000. This lens was a fraction of the price, but I already have another Tamron lens and I'm very pleased with it. So I took a chance and I'm so glad I did. It takes some super photos, it's clear and let's in a fair amount of light so the pictures are bright. I thought that when it was fully out it might start to loose its quality and start to go a bit blurred, wrong! The picture was great. We'll done Tamron. You've me a very happy photographer :))

Good value for money
I bought this lens as a replacement for my Sony 500mm f8 prime lens as I found the fixed aperture to be a bit of a handicap. I am pleased to say this lens was a worthwhile purchase. The lens is mainly metal with a plastic inner tube and zoom/focus rings, the construction is decent on the whole. The only criticism I have is that when the lens is held in a downwards position between shots the lens zoom creeps a fair bit. The lens is quite light for it's size though which is a real boon when you are in the field and have to carry it about all day.The glass is good quality and at 500mm the images are pretty sharp even at the starting aperture of f6.3. The starting aperture of f6.3 isn't that bad and especially on a Sony body where you have inbuilt image stabilisation the images I was producing were sharp and bright with the correct settings. The objective lens is large (86mm) and helps to suck in available light which helps with keeping the images bright. There is very little noticeable distortion across the frame at the different focal lengths and CA is well controlled in most situations and the deep lens hood supplied helps to prevent internal reflections and lens flare effectively. I also found that vignetting was pretty low which considering I am using a full frame body is good performance.A monopod is advisable to use if you have one as it will steady your shots by taking the weight off of your leading hand and reducing the muscle induced wobble that tends to occur with larger lenses while taking a shot. There is a mounting ring which comes with the lens for attaching to a monopod/tripod and it's good quality so you can trust it to hold your rig securely. The autofocus isn't lightning but is fast enough for most situations and uses the camera body's built in focus motor. I found that for air shows, wildlife and motorsport photography the lens was able to keep up ok.If you are after a 500mm zoom lens for less than £1000 I think you will struggle to find a better lens than this. It has all of the features you would expect and can take some beautiful images. Definitely recommended for those on a budget.

Excellent zoom
