Best investment you'll ever make
I had been wanting this set for a long time but you know how it is, there's always something more pressing like the electric bill. Anyway I'm a big fan of Robson Moura and the more I learn about BJJ the more I'm a big fan of Robson. When people say "old school" they generally tend to think of the big guy get on top put the presh game which is totally legit, but as Robson himself says, at 135 lbs., I mean the big guys can just bench press you off them with no problem. So he had to find another way. And the way he found is pretty mindboggling. To me, "old school" doesn't have to just mean the top, it means submission grappling with the emphasis on the submission and Robson is all about the sub. Usually when he shows a pass it's a pass to sub combo and a good many of his subs are BOGO subs like his wrist lock/omoplata combo that is on this set. I've heard his bjj described as elegant, one friend of mine called it "rockstar bjj" which is maybe the best way to put it. But the thing about it is that it's totally doable by normal people and totally submission oriented. I mean it takes you a minute to wrap your mind around and body around it at the beginning but that's mostly because you will be amazed at the simplicity. Expect to have big red palm marks on your forehead. Now, is this the first dvd set I would recommend to a white belt? Probably not but just because I personally believe that you have to go the hard way before you can appreciate the easy way. It may sound backwards to say but you have to climb the mountain before you get to party. Because it's not til you've had the bejeezus beat out of you, and you've tried all those classic positions that don't work because your opponent knows those moves too, that your brain is ready for Robson Moura jiu-jitsu. What else was I going to say, oh I know. The original purpose of bjj was that the little guy could beat the big guy. But a lot of bjj that is taught today is taught by big guys and frankly a lot of that big guy bjj is not really practical to use with people larger than yourself. The big guys get all upset when you say that but it's true. As a medium-sized female I have had the experience of being "the big guy" because a lot of girls are tiny but I've also been the "little guy." And I enjoy getting on top and smashing as much as anybody but the problem is when you meet somebody bigger and stronger, even when you can get the position those guys can defend with brute strength. With Robson Moura bjj they're tapping before they even know what the heck just happened. And yes I love bjj and just being on the mat but I also love to win, I admit it. So, do what you want, if you don't believe me check out Robson on YouTube. He has released a few dvd sets but this is where it all began and this set gives you the foundations of some positions he has continued to build on. There is way more information on these dvd's than I imagined. I am just sorry I didn't buy these a long time ago and that's a fact.
