Columbia Men's Silver Ridge Cargo Short

I've always found Columbia's products to be exceptional in both quality and fit but allowed myself to be swayed by the many reviews that said these shorts ran small and recommended ordering a size 'or two' larger than your normal. So after cancelling the order I had placed minutes earlier for two pair in different colors in my usual 34 waist, I changed the order to 36's. What a mistake, the 36's were way too big. With the help of Amazon's outstanding customer service dept. I returned the 36 waist shorts and re-ordered the 34's. They fit just the way I hoped they would. They offer a 'little' extra room in the waist but that makes them extremely comfortable and makes me extremely happy! I never should have doubted that Columbia's products would be anything other than what I expected, including being true in their sizing. These shorts are of a nylon material that is quite a bit lighter in weight than the cotton shorts I've been used to but it has a quality feel to it and dries much faster than my cotton ones. They come with a nice complementary colored woven fabric belt with a nylon buckle that snaps to 'latch' and releases by simply pressing one end of the buckle. Though I generally opt to remove the belt, which slides right out, and use one of my leather belts. After reviewing Columbia's shorts I was disappointed that they didn't have the type pockets I like except for the Silver Ridge. The front pockets are nice and deep and made of a mesh material, again for faster drying and weight, and I like them. The cargo pocket on the left leg is also very large but is zippered which provides the best security but it's the right leg cargo pocket and rear pockets that I really would hate to do without. They too are large pockets but they have the overlapping flap with a Velcro closure. They just seem to be the best combination of security and convenience. The 10 inch leg length is a couple inches longer than what I'm used to and come to just above my knee but they look good and the length is very comfortable. The other item regarding looks that I like are the Columbia name and logo done in a contrasting color, the logo on the leg and their name on the left rear hip just below the belt. The style and material are new to me but thank goodness the quality and fit are just what I expect. Recommend anything by Columbia highly. Update: the two pair of shorts described earlier were in colors "gravel" and "fossil". Gravel is a nice gray/green shade, w/more toward green. The fossil is a bone tan color. Both are very attractive. Since my previous order I also ordered a pair in the color "abyss", a very deep blue that looks classy. All 3 pair fit the same and all are the same high quality.

These Columbia shorts are generally absolutely great. The material is lightweight, but sturdy, the fit is good, and the design is outstanding in terms of being suitable for hiking and traveling. The cargo pockets are large and allow for safely carrying whatever you need on a trip, and one has a zipper, which is great. The only problem - as with any Columbia pants and shorts is that they only have even sizes. If your waist is size 33, like mine, then you are out of luck. Having no choice, I bought size 32, which is smaller than what I normally wear. It is OK, but a little tight in the waist. However, size 34 would be huge. My advice: if your waist size is an odd number (31, 33, 35, etc.), buy a size down. DO NOT buy a larger size unless you are in the process of gaining weight.

These shorts have some great aspects. They are lightweight and quick drying. The pockets are a good size. The waistband has some give, but they should have more. They are comfortable while standing, but they get too tight when I sit down. The right cargo pocket has two design flaws. First, it's rotated around so far to the right that you end up sitting on whatever is in it. Second, it's got this oddly placed single Velcro closure; it's only on the left side of the pocket flap and doesn't keep it shut. It's too small and it's only on one side. There should be two and a bit larger, one on each side of the flap or, if you have to have only one, then it should be in the middle and be much bigger. Having said all that, these are still the best cargo shorts I've found. I had gotten some other cargo shorts from Duluth Trading that I liked a couple years ago, but they changed the design and the color choices so now they don't come in black, really show sweat badly, and aren't really quick drying. The original design of those shorts was better than their new one, but these Columbia shorts are much lighter and quicker drying (and cost less). I have looked around at a bunch of other shorts and can't find any better than these Columbia shorts.

I'm on the taller side at 6', with a lot of that in my legs, and the 12" inseam took the shorts over my knee cap. Need to buy 10" inseam next time. That's not a complaint. It's just a heads up to hopefully save someone else the issue of having to return and buy the 10" inseam. The product is great! Stretch waste band, very comfortable fit, lightweight, good for a nice evening out, hiking, even swimming i n a pinch. They look great. I'm a really big fan of Columbia products. Best value out there with competitive pricing and nice quality for the working man:). Go Columbia!!

Great shorts. They are very well made and lightweight. Warning: they are very true-to-size. Most pants manufactured today are larger than the listed waist. I'm sure they do that on purpose, but just take any pants out of your closet and measure the waist and it will likely be one or two inches larger than the listed size. Not these, they are very true-to-size. Also, the 10L is "regular," per the tag and 12L is "tall." Also, the fit is nice. A lot of shorts are overly baggy and tend to have very wide leg openings. These are akin to straight leg jeans; not skinny and not relaxed, but just in the middle.
