Perfect
I ordered a couple of these after driving all over New York and New Jersey and Connecticut holding my iPhone. From what I heard, the fine for using a handheld device is pretty steep, especially in NYC; not to mention it's dangerous in tricky situations. (And there are many tricky interchanges in this area.)This phone holder is perfect for my car. I ordered a couple of different ones because I didn't know what would work in my car. This one looks like the least elegant design, but every element is perfect. There is an arm with a sort of spring operated clip that you insert into the vent and it clamps onto one of the louvres when you release the trigger. It makes for a very stable attachment, but is easy to attach and easy to remove. Then the other two legs give some vertical support. The other phone holder that I purchased had a sort of a giant tweezers that gripped the vent, but then drooped because there was no vertical support and is not nearly as stable. The vise that holds the phone is also very stable, but wouldn't hurt your phone or scratch it. The ball socket allows you to point the phone in any direction, and it also seems stable, at least for now while it's new. I really think this design is perfect at least for my car. And no sticky stuff or suction cups. Glad I bought one before the ticket. (An acquaintance of mine got an expensive ticket in NYC for holding his phone, and then on the second offense he was arrested. His wife had to go bail him out.)Well, I'm supplementing my review after three months of use. The ball joint was loose and my phone was drooping; I had to keep picking it up to see it. I figured I'd just buy another one--but wait--it turns out there is a large nut to tighten. As soon as I tightened it, it was as good as new. This inexpensive plastic gadget has gotten me through some of the gnarliest traffic in New York City, and the New Jersey Turnpike, and also through the hills and mountains of East Pennsylvania. It's perfect, at least for my phone and my car. I wish I could give it six stars.FYI, I have an iPhone 5c and a 2005 Audi A4, but I think the photos should help the most in deciding if it's right for your car. This phone holder is the best design and also the cheapest. That's hard to beat.

Didn't Work for Me
Maybe how well this works depends on how your car is designed. I guess a "universal" design is kind of a pipe dream. At first I was pretty excited about this, the grippy part that holds the phone does a good job, the phone does not slip and can grip quickly and easily. There is a ball joint you can use to rotate the phone in different directions. The issue is putting it on the vent. There is a little hook in the back you extend to fit behind the back of the vent lever and then release so it clips onto it with tension and doesn't fall off into the floor. The problem is, in my vehicle, the back part of the vent levers are made from a soft plastic, softer than the front, flush part. Because of this, once you apply the tension to the hook to hold the device on there securely, that soft plastic will flex and collapse and the whole vent will close and the mount just flops around loosely. It doesn't drop the phone, but it doesn't allow you to see anything on your phone or keep it in one location so it becomes pretty useless. The box it was packaged in was hilarious, "...fix on the Automobile cold steam outlet...can be quickly installed in automobile cooling steam outlet".

Not for vertical vents!!!
NOT FOR VERTICAL VENTS!!! I know it says you can use it on any car but i drive a RAV4 (2014) and the vents are vertical. A lot the pictures were for horizontal vents but they said that it rotates so I thought it should work. It does not fit well in the vertical vents, the fit is not tight & the slides left to right & jiggles about, not sturdy at all. Also the spring is really tight so although it will hold the phone it can be hard to put it in with one hand

Works great -- but cannot get a grip on every air vent.
To avoid glare & reflections and use my phone in a rental car, I was looking for a mount which I can attach & remove easily ==> CLIP TO VENT looked like a reasonable idea. This mount can fit air vents but there are limitations. The blades in these vents can be quite deep and the mechanism used by this mount provides a sturdy grip but it is designed to a range of fan vents -- but it won't fit all. In the rental cars I've used it in, I was able to attach it to only 1/2 of the vents, the others had such odd shapes or positions, the mount would not fit.Another positive point for this mount is the increased distance it can provide from the dashboard ==> more room to tilt the phone and room to attach a USB cable to power the phone while driving. Again, the details will depend on your car & dashboard but there I had no problems. The strong points for this mount are the larger room for adjustments which allowed me to avoid glare & reflections and at the same time, there also was room for the USB-cable. That hook-mechanism secures the mount even on rougher roads -- but the same hook limits the size of the vent it can be attached to

Doesn't work for all cars, otherwise a pretty good product.
I bought 2 of these. One for me and one for my sister. I tried it out on my car and I found out that my air vents are too large for this. I think my sister's car will be able to use it, but I will be returning mine. It would be really nice if there was a choice between a longer clamp and a smaller clamp in the package because I really wanted this device to work. The idea of it is sound but it is not designed for all cars in mind.Regarding how well it can hold my phone, it does a great job. My large Nexus 6 in my SUPCASE case managed to fit in it so it does have some large phones in mind. If I had a larger case however, my phone would not have fit so keep that in mind when purchasing. Make sure to measure your phone before purchasing. The way you can adjust the angle of the phone on a ball joint and tighten it is really well designed and doesn't require you to remove the anchor in the air vent.
