Cool design and very well made, but not very practical
This clock is very, very well made. The design and mechanism are impressive. The colors are a matter of taste, which I happen to like, but the deep red makes it difficult to read the time in low light. The luminous hands and markers are not very bright unless you first expose the clock to a VERY bright light, but then the glow does not last very long anyway. The alarm is louder than the Wenger pocket clock, but still not very loud and it automatically stops beeping after about 20 seconds, making this less useful as a travel alarm. It's also not very practical as a pocket watch since it is very heavy (for a watch) and takes two hands to open easily. If you like gadgets, especially exotic ones, you'll really appreciate this clock, especially this 1884 edition which includes the classic toothpick and tweezers. I was tempted to keep this since it is more nostalgic than the 2010 edition, but 2010 edition with the silver face is easier to read the time in low light.

beautiful but almost useless, overpriced
I am first of all, a lover of things Victorinox. I was anxiously awaiting this little travel alarm, as a luxury 'upgrade' to my blue plastic version of some 10 years ago.The clock is beautiful, but imho, not as beautiful as the glamour shots, once in hand. The face, a lovely metallic red with numerals that perfectly match the gold anniversary printing on the red plastic scales (the red covers) are actually a bit of poor contrast, even in good lighting, although giving it a rich look indeed. Why the lowest rating? The primary function, the alarm, is simply too quiet. On several occasions after it arrived, i put it on the table (2ft max) and sofa arm (1 ft max) while watching TV at a low volume-each time i was unaware of the alarm sounding. Its a pleasant two tone beep. Later, with no ambient sound on, but reading, the alarm is audible, but barely, from about 2 ft. With the slightest ambient noise, such as air flow from central air, nothing will be heard. Likewise, when I used it to awaken, on my nightstand, 2ft from me, no ambient noise barely audible. It did not awaken me. To rely on this for making a flight, or meeting , as is so often the case when an alarm is necessary, is the crux of my rating. It is useless in this regard. Yes its really that bad, and I really wanted to be able to keep this piece, but I wont. Also, being able to read an alarm clock in the dark is important to me. The numeral position markss are painted with a lesser quality luminescent paint. Not super luminova, not tritium. Simply, after strong exposure to both sunlight and later a blacklight, the points indeed glowed, moderately, and quickly faded to a very very low level after about fifteen minutes. The face itself it virtually unreadable in a dark but not pitch black light, where a white or contrasting black face would be.The heft (the metal case -clearly not the quartz works) gives this the feel of quality, the scales are gorgeous, the open clock is beautiful. Operation is, imho, ok, but not great. The crown pulls out- to first click , and rotating it one direction makes the alarm hand travel -one direction, rotate it the other way and you can adavnce the date window display. Sounds adequate , but for fine tuning 6:00, 6:15:, 6:30, its not that convenient, as you must again go all the way around and try again-no big deal, but not that convenient. Alarm plunger design is nice, pull it out, and there is a confirming beep to let you know the alarm is on-little consolation given my impressions on alarm volume. Press it and you turn off the alarm.Packaging is impressive, and clearly designed to make this item appear to merit its extremely high original retail price, but im my opinion, given the original price and the now heavily discounted price, its a prime an example of Swiss Army Brands marketing the Emperor's new clothes.Shame on them for failing to combine utility with aesthetics, the essence of the swiss army knife. Wooden box, cloth pouch, angled display board and padded display cradle (cant diplay the watch open to read the face however, all really give the impression of luxury and exclusivity. I took the bait, especially given the typical glamour photos showing the piece, but I am really disappointed.By compairison my original SAK blue plastic travel alarm with crescendo alarm, tritium hands, and super light weight far better reflects this philosophy. This alarm starts so politely and rises to a level that I can hear anywhere in the house (down the hall and seventy feet into the kitchen!) , yet isnt obnoxious. A guarantee you wont miss your flight or client meeting. As a lover of all things swiss army, I was not even ambivalent about keeping this, as it simply would not serve as anything other than a desk clock for me, and one a bit too small for that purpose. And, battery replacement is a pain, and certainly not one to have to address while traveling. No simple ability to open and replace it with a common size, as you needed. Nope, you'lll likely need to find a jeweler, because its waterproof, it has a screw back, and takes a smaller, shorter life type of watch battery. My issue, is, while waterproof, and touted too as a 'pocket watch', imho, not only too bulky but too heavy for these uses to be realistic, thus this clock's form again abandons function. You on the other hand, may find its beauty enough, and clever design (mimicing the knife features of scales and tweezers and toothpick) to compensate for what I complain of, as it IS a beauty.

Jewelry-like timepiece
This travel alarm clock is beautiful to look at and to handle - it is quite the precision instrument! It is very easy to set up and the alarm works well. My only complaint is that I would like a volumecontrol to increase the alarm sound. The beeping that the alarm makes is quite pleasant and not the annoying"noise" that usually comes with an alarm. I am a light sleeper so I don't if it would be loud enough fora really sound-sleeper.
