Western based on the life of William Frederick 'Buffalo Bill' Cody. Cody (Joel McCrea) is an army Indian scout who follows up a military career with a more spectacular one as a larger-than-life super-showman, touring throughout the world with his spectacular Wild West show.

BUFFALO BILL 1944 DVD from FOX
Although I have been a western film fan for 60 plus years, there are still quite a number I have never seen, and this one, even though the battle scenes and others have been used countless times as stock footage. The first hour is simply a classic traditional western with the delightful exception that it shows the Cheyenne as the victims of the white man's greed and treachery. They don't want war, but when they ride....Director Wellman has captured some of the most spectacular epic battle scenes and used literally hundreds of extras. The Cheyenne are pictured as warriors to be respected and at the same time, feared. McCrea is just right as Bill and O'Hara matches him and is perfectly cast as an Eastern woman who comes to love Bill and "the west". The second half (or third) is about Bill's time in Washington, his fall from grace and mighty comeback. The DVD is excellent 4.3 ratio. Technicolour is brilliant and the subs are good. A lovely film and highly recomended. (P.S. Mitchell and Buchanan are on top form as Ned Buntline as Sgt "Chips" respectively).

Excellent western!
This dvd has a good picture and sound quality eventhough the film is rather old. The character of buffalo bill comes out quite symphatetic and realistic. The story itself is also good and not centered only on fighting the indians, but also on his private life. All in all, I would gladly give this movie a five star!.

William Wellman's Buffalo Bill
Wild Bill Wellman was known for speaking out about his movies if he did not like them. The man who gave us movies like Wings(1928), The Public Enemy(1931), A Star Is Born(1937), Nothing Sacred(1937), Beau Geste(1939) and The Ox-Bow Incident(1943) I'd really like to know what he thought of his Buffalo Bill(1944) because it's not very good.Joel McCrea is Buffalo Bill Cody in this fantasia. I'm not a big fan of McCrea and only think he made about four or five worthwhile films but to be fair he always did his best with what was given to him. Maureen O' Hara is good as usual but the chemistry she had with John Wayne isn't here with McCrea. Anthony Quinn delivers as always as Yellow Hand the Cheyenne. Thomas Mitchell is fine as Ned Buntline but Edgar Buchanan is pointless as an old Cavalry Sergeant he doesn't have the comic appeal or soldier like toughness of Victor McLaglen for example. Scraping the barrel here though is Linda Darnell as Yellow Hand's sister who teaches at a school for white children while dressed in like Pocahantas , was any of that ever even probable in the West of the 1870s?There's a battle between Cheyenne Indians and the U.S. Cavalry half way through the film. It's entertaining but nothing like that ever happened. McCrea's Cody is something of a modest country bumpkin nothing like his historical counterpart. The film is full of cringeworthy moments. I don't want to give too much away if you watch it but they include a scene with Darnell and O' Hara about a dress, a scene where Buchanan is about to tear the U.S. flag apart and of course the ending when a little crippled Tiny Tim like child calls out to Cody "God Bless you Buffalo Bill." I mean come on. I often say that old films are not as cheesy as people think but this one can be. If you watch it you can enjoy it but you won't want to watch it again for a very long time.

A ROUSING , RARELY SEEN WESTERN !
A cracking western with a rousing finale.Very much in the 'John Ford' vein although this was skilfully directed by 'William A Wellman'.Filmed in beautifully Technicolor and with a nice turn from a crusty 'Edgar Buchanan'.Good quality picture and sound on this dvd.Highly Recommended !

Sehr gut gemachter Indianerfilm
