Does this need oil before it can be used?

No it comes ready to use. Occasionally oil the blades as per the instructions.

Does the 24v batteries used in mower operate this machine?

Dear Customer, No, the 24V battery can fit the 24V tools, for this hedger trimmer, you should purchase 40V battery. Or, you can purchase the 24V pole hedger which can fit the 24V battery. Below link for your reference https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0855WJYJT Thanks

I can see the hedge trimmer pivots forward but can it pivot backwards too?

The cutter pivots slightly backwards to about 20° which is good for cutting the face of a hedge, forwards is about 80°.
