What an inspiring great book
Ed this is the best book I've had the privilege to read. This one and the other one was about a guy that fought in the Huertgen Forest. God Bless you Mr Shames and I have no doubt you will see all you men when you get to heaven. I felt like I was there and was absolutely amazed at the warrior and compassionate spirit in you. Thank you for sharing your life with us. There must be a special place for men like you in The Lord's Kingdom. Thank you again for your above and beyond service.

My great uncle was a member of the 101st Airborne
Another fan of Ian Gardner's work. Have his first two books, as well. My great uncle was a member of the 101st Airborne, only in the 3rd Battalion of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in the HQ Company, and was referenced a few times in Ian's second work "Deliver Us from Darkness." Not sure that he ever knew or would have known Ed, even though Ed started out in the 3rd BTN, but I know that Ed's story and experience represents much of my great uncle's. Am eager to read Ian's account of Ed's military history and experience with the 506th. The detail and depth with which Ian recreates history allows any reader to feel that he/she is there and experiencing it all...sights, sounds, images real or imagined, the horror of it all, and those moments which must have touched the troopers immensely as they gained an understanding of the gratitude of those whom they liberated in France and Holland. Thank you, Ian, and I look forward to another great read about this hero among heroes and leader among men.

This is a no-holds barred book that puts you in the middle of the great battles of western Europe from 1944-1945
I just finished reading "Airborne," and found it to be an extremely valuable look at parachute warfare in World War II. It really shines when read in conjunction with Ian Gardner's trilogy on the 506th Parachute Regiment of the 101's Airborne in Europe during the war. As told through the eyes of Col. Ed Shames, who at 93 is still on active duty! This is a no-holds barred book that puts you in the middle of the great battles of western Europe from 1944-1945. The Col. is a truly amazing leader. This is also a very unique look at Easy Company and its men. If you are interested in the day to day grind of U.S. Paratroopers in the war, this book is for you.

Recommended read.
I've read this authors book before. I found this one to be more straight forward and not having to deviate so much to keep everything into context, time and place. This was just mostly following Troopers journey thru Europe and his exploits, which I found captivating. I couldn't put it down once I started. Recommended read.

A neglected viewpoint of Easy Company
What a great book!. I have enjoyed this author's previous works, but this one is on a new level. I found the writing to be engaging and flew through the book. I also was left wondering about the other tales of "Easy Company" from Ambrose or the TV show. I think anyone who has an interest in airborne warfare or simply enjoyed "Band of Brothers" would enjoy this.

Another Great Story About Easy Company
Band of Brothers was a great introduction to the heroes of Easy Company but the picture of their exploits is incomplete without reading this book with Ed Shames viewpoints. Must read for complete view of all the outstanding accomplishments of the heroes of Easy Company.

Disappointed-Big time!
I did not enjoy this book at all. Having read many more about the 101st, their battles and the people involved, I looked forward to getting to know Ed Shames. That's the problem, you don’t get to know him. The book just does not engage with him or what he did in any meaningful way. When compared to other books It skims over everything, delivering very little detail, Easy Company fans will be disappointed as it barely mentions any of the well known people or describe what he did in the the company in any detail. This book could have been about anybody by just changing the name. The Combat story of Fred Bloggs would be just as interesting!

Don’t bother
I was disappointed with this book. I’ve read most of the Band Of Brothers books, and this one comes close to being one of the worst. There wasn’t enough Ed Shames to much of the author.
