We Are Water Protectors: (Caldecott Medal Winner)

This is such a beautiful book! The story, the artwork, the message, the representation... all are outstanding! It made a great gift for my little cousin! Thank you to the author/ illustrator. Ya did good! Aho!

This book is such a gem! Telling the truth about racism gives tiny people the truth of the made up system of “race” and to helping them to be rooted in truth as they work to dismantle the system of so called “white supremacy”

An instant hit and classic with me and the half dozen kids I’ve already gifted it to! My 3 and 7 year old nieces from difference families are in love with this book and asking all the right questions. I am thrilled that they love it as much as I do because understanding the critical relationship we have with water and the need for stewardship is incredibly important, whether you know about Standing Rock or not - and whether you are indigenous or not, though it is all the more sweet that it was written by and indigenous person. I spent over four months at Standing Rock. This book amazingly captures the inspiration I felt there. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I hope you will consider buying an extra copy and gifting it to your local elementary school. It’s a book I hope will become widely available to all.

I pre-ordered this book because my children are water protectors. In fact my youngest learn how to say water in Lakota before she ever learned it in English... which she learned right there at Oceti Sakowin #NODAPL camp. My older daughter remembers so much from that time and she was only seven. This book is gorgeously Illustrated and although it doesn't go into depth on the details of environmental protest, it definitely memorializes a Time that is very special to us. And it memorializes that time in a way that is authentic to our experience. As we head into an unknown future where water quality, global warming, and political agendas the try to wield those topics like props... I think it is so important that we remember the lessons we learned at Standing Rock. That was not a protest or a war. It was a mind shift. Somewhere already there. Some shifted during that time. But as we go forward, more and more of us are going to be walking along as Water Protectors, Earth Defenders, and land stewards. #MniWiconi #WaterISLife

As a native person who stayed in Oceti Sakowin during the NODAPL protests, I totally adore this book. I am so happy to give it to my daughter. All around a fabulous book that represents native people well! 🙂

This is a beautiful, book, written and illustrated by Native women: Carole Lindstrom, the author, is tribally enrolled at Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, and Michaela Goade, the illustrator, is Tlingit, a member of the Kiks.ådi Clan. Native children and adults can see themselves represented in the book and nonnatives can see an authentic story that shows how children and adults are working together for the earth and the peoples of the earth. I recommend it for libraries, classrooms, and homes.

Beautiful artwork and great theme. You can tell the author it's very passionate about this topic. Four stars is simply because the language is a bit stilted in areas and doesn't read very smoothly. I find I'm adding additional words to create better cadence when I'm reading aloud. But my two boys love the book and it is a frequent bedtime request. Very much recommend.

I bought this book to my little cousin who has developed a strong connection to water! I want to support her love for this sacred resource!

Beautiful illustrations and meaningful story from a community whose voice is often not heard. Great exposure to diversity for children. Ending is hopeful but not obvious enough for younger children. Will have to explain.
