How much weight can it hold?

Tough question to answer. It is steel and can take a bunch of weight. We have hung lots of equipment and tarps on it no problem. We have never bent one and we use four of them whenever we camp. They are pretty tough. Even the thinner fold out hook is pretty solid. If there is a failure, it is usually because we are pulling them too far sideways in soggy ground. And if there is a problem, Snow Peak is usually really good about standing behind their products. I love these things and find them extremely versatile.

Can you hammer the pile driver in at the top instead of using the manual pile driver as shown? What is it made of, will it rust?

Snow Peak tells us the following: no, the Pile Driver is designed to "drive itself into the ground" manually, as shown in this video clip. They do not recommend pounding the item with a hammer, as this may deform the Pile Driver. As for materiality, the Pile Drive is made from chrome-plated steel; if left outdoors, yes, this item will succumb to the elements. When not in use, they recommend storing the Pile Driver in a dry, temperature-controlled environment.

What is the maximum height fully extended?

The Pile Driver has a length of 44".

Does it come with a carry bag?

Yes, it comes with a functional clear plastic tote bag with a closure at one end. We are avid campers so we decided to buy the extremely sturdy canvas bag. It is made to last a lifetime. This hanger/pole is featured in a YouTube review titled "Camp Laundry and Lighting Hangers". Sorry the snapshot of the pole bag is pretty poor, but it can be seen better in the video.
