My First Girlfriend Is a Gal: The Complete Series [Blu-ray]

This is a review of the standard edition blu-ray/DVD set. The set includes two blu-rays and two DVDs. I've only watched the blu-rays. Blu ray 1 has episodes 1 - 8 and blu-ray 2 has episodes 9 and 10 and an OVA. The included extras are nothing to write home about and can be skipped without remorse. It comes with an English sound track and a Japanese soundtrack with subtitles.The plot - Junichi Hasiba is a second year at high school. He's a bit of a loser and so are his three closest friends. They spend their time playing games and reading about girls in magazines. The three friends trap Junichi into asking out Yukana Yame who is "gal" and very pretty. This is the story of how Junichi learns that gals aren't easy and that they are people with feelings too. It's a growing up/first love story with comedy and touching elements.Animation - This is animated in a relatively simple style. There is a lot of fan service which is of the mild ecchi kind. It's no High School DxD as there is no nudity but there is a lot of fanservice and that is mostly what this anime is known for.Soundtrack - I don't normally listen to the English sound track but after reading some other reviews I decided to give it a go to figure out if the "Valley Girl" accents would make a difference. This was a mistake. The accents are irritating after just a few minutes and worst of all the English script changes the feel of the anime for the worst. It becomes a darker, more knowing and much more cynical anime and loses all the charm of Junichi's journey. The Japanese version has its awkward moments but fits with the premise of the story much better.Commentary - This is a love story and a story of growing up and realising that looks and dress code don't define people. It is certainly funny and awkward at times and some of the characters are very dubious. The one friend who is best described as a lolicon sails very close to some areas that should not be condoned in any way. The character interaction is very good and Junichi's journey. as he realises that Yukana is a human being with feelings and thoughts of her own is very well done in the Japanese version. The English version changes the character of the story too much as it becomes far more cynical and manipulative. More Western cynicism but less Japanese.Overall this is fun and the amount of fan service should not be underestimated. It does,however, have a message and character development. It stands watching more than once and is highly recommended.

-just got my LE version from amazon, just like these girls its gorgeous to look at, prettiest artcover box I 've ever seen-first time I have ever bought an anime specifically for the English dub, its definite worth buying, I really bought it for the one episode where the girls read the light novel, basically girls talking dirty, but after watching the anime, I actually like it when the dub cast starts the valley girl slang talk, its really entertaining, especially when the pink hair girl first got her hair color changed and starts imitating valley girl slang, absolutely hilarious.-fyi, shows boobs but no nipples, has butt, panty and bra scene with groping, by the way, just like the spray on girl, the panties look sprayed on, can see the curvy details.-if you cant afford the LE, I would definitely buy the regular one, far as I know this is the only anime that has girls talking in valley girl slang.

Great anime, pretty funny but sadly it's only a season but i still enjoy it

I just literally finished the series a moment ago, and feel compelled to give my feelings on this. First, on the positive side, the series was really good with the love story with many likeable characters. The bit of development that occurred in the series was mostly done well, and was enjoyable. I don't get off on fan service, but would also say that I can appreciate it at the same time. I definitely think they covered those bases well through out the series.Now to focus on the negative... First off, as some others have mentioned in their reviews, the pedophile friend was horrible and way, way too much. It was extremely disturbing and made the show difficult to watch at times. I tried to look for some justification on it, maybe the "its a different culture" kind of thing, but I don't believe that would even be found acceptable in Japan. It was really gross and disturbing. **MINOR SPOILER ALERT NEXT SENTENCE** The sad part is there was an easy way out with this with another character in the series, but the writers threw that out immediately. **SPOILER OVER** I for the life of me can not fathom that at all. On a lesser note now, as I mentioned before, the development of characters was good, but to me that really didn't get very far. I really feel a lot was left on the table. I assume that is because the series was so short so far.On that note, I will close by saying I feel this is a very enjoyable series, as long as you can close yourself off to the disturbing pedophile thing. I really do hope they do decide to proceed with a sequel and in that series find a way to end that disturbing portion in a good way. I think most who enjoy the love, harem, fan service, etc. kind of anime story line type thing will appreciate it.

One of my favorites. Animation is top tier. Lots of fan service, makes you wish you'd pay more attention in high school.

Low key one or my favorites when I first started watching this I wasn't sure how to feel about it but after the first 2 episodes I was hooked. Super funny and entertaining anime definitely worth a watch.

I loved tons of a grown jokes and Humber not fir kids the adult jokes will pass over kids heads they won’t understand the meaning of the jokes in the sires ps one nude woman

This anime was really cute and had sexy moments the voices for dubbed were good if u like a romantic comedy its definitely a pick up for your collection

My first girlfriend is a gal is about a boy named Junichi Hashiba a boy in his second year of high school who is your stereotypical anime high school boy who is still a virgin until his friends come up with a plan in which Junichi asks out the Hottest girl in the school Yukana in order for him to loose his V-card. I should say that this is not a show for everyone but i had a lot of fun with it and thought the dub was also really good even better than the subtitled version in my opinion. The Limited Edition box set is also probably one of my new favorites I love the pink and glittery chipboard box and the lenticular art cards (while very risky as per the shows nature) are really well done and of pretty good quality and I also like that the blu-ray & dvd version is 100% uncensored and uncut. The only thing is I wish is that the included art book was a hardcover art book and not a cheap paperback art book. But other then that if you really liked this show I would recommend picking it up on blu-ray and for those who are on the fence of picking up this series I would recommend to stream it first to see if you like it first.

Most of the jokes and the characters are amazing. It's definitely a must, if you like Anime with awkwardly love and uncertainties.
