Mind-expanding hallucinatory sounds drift in and out of drones and ragas, from the lysergic sitar of Ananda Shankar and trippy Bollywood vibes of the 1970s to more recent concoctions

For fans of novelty effects. . .
I'm generally a big fan of the Rough Guide series of records, but some of their compilations just don't work for me--including the recent "psychedelic" and "rare groove" sets from different world regions (India, Africa, Latin). These selections seem more interested in novelty effects for the sake of novelty effects, regardless of whether they're at all compelling musically or lyrically. The effect is something like listening to an hour of Ray Stevens greatest hits (if such a collection exists?), with a smattering of evocative material surrounded by deservedly forgotten tunes. For anyone exploring musical styles around the globe, I'd recommend almost anything else in the Rough Guide series.

Compiled by the guru of World Music.
This album has been compiled by the living legend of World Music DJ Ritu &, as such, this is a special, comprehensive presentation of psychedelic India. A must listen which will not disappoint. I recommend all of her Rough Guide compilations of Bollywood & related music.
