It works
The 1RM Method took me from gym hero, to powerlifter, to winning my class in my first powerlifting competition in the space of four months. This book delivers results. It's that simple. Strength Coach Farncombe is currently head coach of the GB powerlifting team, and one of the most well respected and knowledgeable powerlifting coaches in the world today.Reading this book felt less of a learning curve, and more of a vertical climb given I'm a novice lifter, and many of the concepts were completely new to me. The book is really aimed at coaches and lifters who are already performing well and want to take themselves to the next level. Being a newbie to the game I had to read it twice! The book teaches you:- Different approaches to peaking up depending on what program you were using before;- How to space your sessions to manage both muscular fatigue and nervous system fatigue to get the best from each workout;- How to manage and undulate volume and intensity so you don't lose strength or fitness while tapering;- Revisiting the essential mechanics of the competition lifts;- How to manage the stress and pressure of competing, and get into a warrior mindset;- How to intelligently select your lift attempts based on previous max effort sessions;- How to warm up effectively for each lift on the day;- And most importantly, how to create a supercompensation effect so your strength peaks exactly on the day of the competition (I was sceptical about this until I experienced it myself and hit PBs on the platform)This is not a general book about powerlifting. This is an exact template for peaking, tapering, and intelligent planning so you are the strongest you've ever been on competition day. It's a book about how to win competitions. And it works.

An excellent bible for powerlifters & coaches
I have been powerlifting for a year, and after having completed my first competition I was looking for a book to: help me improve my technique; outline a 'recipe for success' for future competitions; provide a better understanding of powerlifting programming; plus, explain the sciencey bits behind training and programming. This book achieves all of these.... and much more.I personally think this book - and the level of detail within - is incredible. With tips on what to look for in a coach, example program guides to ensure you fit in all three lifts, rest days and accessory days into 7 days, and how to get over the mental/psychological barriers of lifting heavier weight (it's all down to supra-maximal work - all explained in the book). Farncombe has an impressive amount of knowledge, and his passion for the subject is clear when reading his 1RM book. It seems like a slim book, but it has more information & detail you could ever need, and has helped me approach my training and programming in a new and improved way.

FANTASTIC PEAKING METHOD
I am a long term competitor in powerlifting, and can`t express how brilliant this book has been for me. I love compiling my own training program, trying to stay away from the well known ones simply because as a Dad of 2 young kids and the busy work life I lead, I don`t have the time to train any more than 3 times a week for an hour or so, and never seem to get the full benefit of any well known program as I can`t commit the time in extra workouts, accessory movements etc.Because I enjoy doing my own programming so much, it always left me wondering what to do in the weeks before a competition. This book, and the 4 week method in which it takes you from lifting heavy in general, to peaking properly for a competition, along with the massive confidence it gives you to hit your numbers is unparalleled in my opinion. The training is tough, but not too tough, and with volume days and rep max days it really has everything to get the heavy weight on your back or in your hands, and hit your target reps. I have used this twice now and had 2 of the most enjoyable competitions in my life. I will never peak for a competition using any other method. The final point to note is that it is a 4 week method, and I really love this as I was used to doing 8 or 12 week peaks, where I would inevitably get ill, miss sessions due to my work or pick up a small injury. With only 4 weeks to give it your all, this has simplified the entire process and I now go into the day of the competition feeling amazing.

Fantastically informative and a great read but with appallingly reproduced figures and tables. Sort it out!
Incredibly informative and very obviously written by someone who is quite clearly and expert in his field, this otherwise excellent book is let down by rather poor grammar and sentence structure (was this not read by an editor prior to publication?) and frankly appalling and uninterpretable figures and tables. I can only assume that there has been a problem with the latest batch that have been printed as my brand new copy has images and tables that are completely indecipherable. A really excellent book let down by a few details.

A great guide to peaking
The author goes into great detail on why many peaking systems fail to deliver optimum results and how his system differs. It gives training plans but it's a shame there is no information or another book on training for the rest of the year. As a consequence, I'm trying the Sheiko system with the official and brand new Sheiko Gold app. It features AI to determine the optimum training on any given day whether it's off-season or leading up to a competition using your specific data, such as recovery status.
