Great laptop that can handle most everything!
After doing months of research I finally came down to buying a Lenovo (which I have never bought before). Needless to say I am VERY satisfied with this product. Most of what I do is HD video editing (1080p) with Adobe software (premiere, after effects) and gaming. All in all, this laptop has exceeded my expectations on what it can do.DISPLAY: The 4k display is amazing to look at. It indeed is an IPS panel unlike the TN panels found on non 4k Lenovo y50's. All colors are produced correctly, no need to calibrate. Viewing angles are great, I have no problems with them, you can clearly see the screen from all directions. Keep in mind though that 4k hasn't become standard yet, so some 3rd party software doesn't display correctly (ex. buttons are way to small on some programs). You can work past this though, for me it was not a big deal, just keep in mind until software updates accommodate 4k displays not everything will display correctly but is still workable.GRAPHICS: Most of what I do is video editing and the Nvidia GTX 860m has cruised through everything I push at it. Haven't tested modern gaming out all the way yet, but from reviews online the 860m should handle most modern games on high at 1080p. I did test an old game of mine, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 from 2009 which ran at 4k at 60fps. With editing I can vouch that with CUDA or OpenGL Adobe Premiere runs fast with rendering. About 5min for a 1080p 2:30 minute video at 15bits. Intel also has their integrated graphics for less demanding tasks and conserving battery. You can set which programs use which video card, but most of the time it switches automatcallyCOOLING: This laptop has run so cool despite the heavy work I've been using it for. The fans kick in, but you can barley hear them, even when I ran Call of Duty at 4k it barely made any noise or created any noticeable heat. The chassis on this thing is amazing at containing the sound. Temperature wise, I can second all the reviews that say this laptop runs cool even when under heavy load on the GPU and CPU. The fan located by the hinge has not caused me any problems and it doesn't affect the display.SOUND: The Dolby software that comes with the laptop really enhances the audio. Without enhancements the audio is a little muffled, however I'm an audio buff so most people won't really recognize the difference. Loudness is excellent, and the sub woofer on the bottom works flawlessly.DESIGN: I love the design on the chassis, however it is a fingerprint magnet, especially on the back cover. The keyboard glows red, and the keys are very visible at night. I have not found a problem typing on the keyboard, but like anything you adapt. I came from a laptop without a number pad and I'm fine typing on this machine.MULTITASKING AND CPU: The i7 4710HQ (a quad core, with eight virtual cores) handles everything I've put on it so far. Multitasking is a breeze, and windows 8.1 runs silk smooth. Programs open fast, there is no delay at all. I can switch between gaming, video encoding, and chrome all at the same time without any lag.STORAGE & MEMORY: I ordered the model with a 512GB Solid State Drive, and I couldn't be more happier. System boots up completely in 7 seconds, and shuts down just as fast. If you are able to go with the Solid State drive, the traditional hard drive Lenovo has is a 5400rpm which is not a fast performing drive. I also went with 16gig of RAM which depending on what your doing, may be too much. 8gig will be adequate for most people. My purpose for video editing requires enough memory for more intensive tasksBATTERY: I haven't tested this out fully, but from my experience so far without being plugged in, I get about 4 hours with constant streaming of video on YouTube with power settings at balanced and running off of the Intel Graphics. This won't yield 7 hours, but for the top line hardware this is packing, 4 hours is great!PORTS: 7/24/14...Just tested out USB 3.0 transfer speeds, downloading from a USB 3.0 hard-drive the speeds are at about 128mb/sec which coming from USB 2.0 is amazing. There are 2 USB 3.0 ports and 1 USB 2.0 port. A full size HDMI port is also a plus for this machine which allows you to hook up to a 4k monitor. This is a great laptop all in all. The design is fantastic and overall this laptop will handle most everything you throw at it. I highly recommend this for anyone looking for a new laptop, that could replace a desktop. Also one important thing I found in this laptop over a power house laptop like MSI, ASUS, etc the cooling was what steered me toward this, because cooling in a laptop is so important in knowing what the lifespan of your hardware will be.What ever you decide, you will not be disappointed in this laptop. Great machine!UPDATE 9/23/14: So I've had this laptop for two months now, and it still performs amazing! Battery life is still solid on it, just a little over 4 hours when off the battery (with no wifi on). The solid state drive is still super fast, I've used about 150gigs of space so far. Boot up time is still 7-10 secs, same for shutdown. Gaming has been great on this thing, the NVIDIA 860M is holding up very well. Ran Skyrim on 1080p with max settings and I'm seeing 45-60fps. Build quality of the chassis is still strong, little to no scratches on it and I've been traveling with this laptop. The screen still remains fabulous on it. And I'm noticing more programs are support 4k applications, particularly Adobe (photoshop, lightroom, etc..), which by the way, video rendering in premiere on this laptop is super fast thanks to CUDA from the NVIDIA card. The only annoyance I'm having (which I believe is software/driver related) is that anytime I highlight something on a white background, there is an adjustment in the brightness on the screen. Kind of weird. It's not a major adjust in brightness, but I do notice it. I've turned off auto-brightness in windows 8.1, however that has done nothing. Either way, that little bump still doesn't stop me recommending this laptop to anyone who wants a portable powerhouse PC.UPDATE: 4/9/2015I'm still rockin' this laptop. Don't know what more I can say about it. It still performs like a tank. This is also my first SSD storage pc and I gotta say I don't think I'll ever go back to tradition platter hard-drives. I've loaded this thing up with stuff, moved files all around, and it still boots in 7 seconds. No lags at all for loading applications. Video-editing is still my primary use, along with with everyday tasks, and gaming. Looking forward to getting the Windows 10 update for this system. Nothing has malfunctioned on this laptop either. No issues with drivers, hardware like wifi (which has great signal strength), usb ports....ALL GOOD. I still recommend this laptop to anyone, and I noticed on Lenovo's site they are starting to include the 900 series GTX NVIDIA chips. Wonder if I can upgrade the video card?!UPDATE 10/8/2015So I just installed Star Wars Battlefront Beta and man I gotta say that it runs amazing on this laptop. I was worried since CanIRunThis told me my laptop wouldn't handle the game. On 1080p resolution with everything set to medium I am getting around 40fps with the GTX 860M 4gb NVIDIA card. I will say the default resolution was at 4k when I first opened the game, and with the settings on Auto it was actually playable but was hitting 20fps. The thing about this game though is that even if you lower a couple settings it still looks amazing. I am guessing that I will be able to get 30fps with higher settings and a resolution set at 2k. Anyway just wanted to update and say that YES this laptop can run a brand new game perfectly that is very graphics intensive.Other than that I've still had no problems with the laptop. Haven't upgraded to Windows 10 yet. Will update when I do. ThanksUPDATE: 8/6/2016After two years, this laptop still rocks. I use it full time for my videography business as well as playing games. Recently downloaded LOTR: Shadows of Mordor and it runs flawlessly. Would still buy this laptop again. Windows 10 runs great on it. After the initial update, there were some older lenovo drivers that did not work properly, but Windows seemed to update and fix all those drivers automatically. Again can't say enough after two years with this computer. It's never failed me and has truly helped me start my own business. Thanks Lenovo.

Think twice before buying this computer
Only one word could describe this computer: disappointing. Although the specs are impressive, the screen doesn't reproduce colors accurately (specially yellows, which look dull and brownish). The screen brightness is so low, you cannot see it if you're indoors near a window on a sunny day. The keybord has odd spacing and always find myself hitting the wrong keys even though my hands are pretty average in size.I would not recommend this computer at all. For this money, you're better off buying a MacBook Pro and running bootcamp, I certainly regret not doing so.

Constant Popping sound coming from laptop while on.
Great laptop, runs any program no problem. However, the day after I first started using the laptop, I experienced a clicking/popping sound coming consistently from the left upper side of the keyboard, almost as if it was from the speakers. This sound comes even when headphones are plugged in and volume is off. This issue has yet to be resolved, even after calling Lenovo and Amazon. Will update.

Love the UHD but miss my CD Drive, The laptop is sturdy but heavy for a laptop without a disk drive.
Good all around PC. Sometimes extremely fast but other times not. I blame a lot of this on Windows 8. Love the red lighted keyboard. 4K is pretty cool. I miss my CD drive. I have recently been having trouble with WIFI with this laptop. Being forced to reset WIFI once. Not exactly sure what is going on. It is not my router.

Not perfect but pretty good gaming laptop for the price!
Some notes about the laptop:Lacks some modern creature comforts like:Dedicated multimedia buttons Play, Stop, Previous, Next, Screen brightness, Audio volume. Some suggestions:Use Chrome or IE to enjoy a good browsing experience.Don't use firefox, has some issues with the render engine running slowly on 4K displays. There is also an option to boot to desktop built in 8.1 buried deep in the start menu.Use an external HDMI display which has 3.5mm audio jack or digital audio out to eliminate noise when plugging in audio cables.Pro's:PricePretty good gaming laptop, considering it has 100x the graphics processing power that my 4 year old laptop had.4K monitor built in.Can drive an external 4K monitorVents the cpu/gpu from the base of the monitor (very much like any Mac Book model of laptop)JBL sound is pretty good for listening to No AgendaCons:Only has HDMI out for external monitors.Red backlite keyboardNo shutter over the webcamFace unlock is picky about lighting, hair styles, etc. Expect to spend a lot of time typing in your password and training it. Or Turning it off.Requires internet to setup and create or use a shiny new Microsoft account that will attach the installed copy of Windows 8.1 to for login and password. Also on 4K displays a lot of stuff needs some UI tuning (for applications that support changing the DPI) Most computer stuff runs @ 75 DPI, So on this most UI's need bumped up to 140 DPI to be usable. There are a lot of built in windows applications that are difficult to use because of this UI scaling issue like: Windows media player, Control panel utilities, IE.HDMI spec sucks because when a monitor which is used for audio goes to sleep (screen turns off) So does the audio that would be passed through it. Inconvenient when listening to music or other audio only stuff.Takes about 45 minutes to get up and running after opening the box and waiting for windows to finish setting up and creating accounts.Everything considered its a pretty good laptop, I have yet to get around to installing Linux on it. If I do I'll probably try out a few flavors of Ubuntu to checkout hardware compatibility.
