does this vector for cats kill ticks as well?

I can't speak to the chemistry of Vectra, but only to my own experience. My cat is an indoor-outdoor guy, and I check for biting critters on him every night. Since using Vectra (about a year, now) I have had to pull fewer ticks from him than ever . . .maybe 6 this summer. He has remained flea-less since I started; he doesn't run off when I dose him; there is virtually no odor. We are both happy!

Are the ingredients the same for dog and cat?

I don't own a dog so I am not certain - but since Vectra makes a separate treatment for dogs I would assume they are not interchangeable.  On the other hand, the actual ingredients may be the same or similar but I would guess the dosage differs, particularly since most of these products are designed to work by he weight of the animal.  I do know hat at least one brand of flea treatment for dogs specifically says not for use on cats so I'm guessing the same applies to others including Vectra.

does this medicine needs a prescription?

No, the entire Vectra line is categorized as a general use pesticide and is therefore regulated by the EPA, not the FDA.  There are no EPA regulated products that require a prescription.

What is the difference between the 'Green' version and the other one?  The active ingredients are the same - which one to choose?

Accepted Answer

The "green" tube is for cats weighing more than nine pounds.  I assume by "the other one" you mean the brown tube.  As you noted the ingredients are exactly the same.  It's the size of the dose that differs.  The dose for larger cats is .041 fluid ounces per tube while the dosage for cats under 9 pounds is .027 per tube.
