I see the attaching end is steel - what is the rest of the shank/end made of?

They have a end cap made of plastic at the end of the shaft with a ring. I suppose It's there so the tool can be hung up on a wall or pegboard. I took mine off. Underneath this piece Is the same metal shaft as the rest of It Is.

Is this stainless steel or is there a paint or coating on it?

This is zinc coated steel, not stainless.  It is not considered food safe.

Question 3

Is the maximum diameter of the head exactly 1.75"? I need one to fit through the 1.75" neck of a carboy. Thanks!

I brew beer and use carboy for secondary. I used this for a roof coating mixer in a 5 gal. bucket. The mixer is 47mm at the widest point of blade. Its larger than 1.75inch.

Question 4

I would think a hexagonal shspes shaft is better than round   Any stripping in drill chuck?

I would be very leery of this mixer and possibly the manufacturer.  The "present day" mixer is completely different from the one I bought.  The differences?  Mine is all steel.  The shaft on mine is hexagonal the whole length.  The mixing end is welded.  Lastly, mine has a double spiral at the end to do the mixing; not paddles.  The present day mixer has none of those characteristics.  The only similarity is that they are both "mixers." By the way, my mixer cost $3.72 but that was 5 years ago.

I do not know why they would use the same part number for a completely new design.  (If they did ... I didn't check.)  Is it because they wanted to benefit from good feedback on the old design?  The new mixer may be good but the feedback may be tainted.

In reference to the hex vs. round design; yes a hex is much better but the round one might work if the chuck is tight enough and you don't start the rotation suddenly.
