Useful Resource for Specific Strategies
I'm nearly through this book and, overall, I've found it to be an easy read and quite helpful. The initial chapters were a little too "touchy feely" for me, and filled with a lot of what I call "empty business words," but the chapters on strategic approaches to building, sustaining, and growing a practice have proven to be useful. I've taken a lot of notes and plan to implement several specific strategies outlined by the author. I will say that the book is riddled with grammatical errors, typos, and layout errors, which as a stickler for grammar, I find distracting. This edition would benefit from additional review(s) by more discerning editors... But, in trying to look past that, I can say I'm pleased with the general content of the book and expect it to be a helpful resource.

Finding this book very helpful
I am finding this book very helpful. As an intelligent, newly licensed therapist, I had some of the obvious basics in place (a nice website, good business cards, etc) but I had absolutely no experience in the world of small business and marketing. I found Lynn's attitude about marketing very refreshing and relieving (e.g. don't do anything that stresses you out too much, because you're unlikely to draw in customers if you come off as stressed-out - makes sense!).If you are comfortable and secure with the idea of small business building and marketing, you may want something more general or standard (e.g. Duct Tape Marketing). But if you find yourself feeling well outside of your comfort zone with the standard therapist marketing advice (e.g. put together a presentation and deliver it at your local community center, go to chamber of commerce meetings to network), you are likely to find something you can do in Lynn's book. I did. Her ideas on how to build a clear, positive direction and attitude, were really helpful for me as it helped me identify the anxieties getting in my way and build my confidence in the area of building my business.

Guess I was expecting something else?
Based on the table of contents, I was expecting more practical, hands-on business information. There was literally ONE paragraph discussing practice organization as a sole proprietorship. More attention was given to LLC/INCs, even so, I guess I was expecting more depth?I found much of the information very generic. Practical how-to aspects were not addressed, except to say "hire a lawyer/accountant/bookkeeper, etc." I was expecting a more detailed overview of the work involved in setting up an Ideal Practice, for instance sample ROI, intake, and consent forms. Nope.Hope this helps someone else...

She isn't going to give you clients if you don't do the work
in reading the uninspired by the revelations of Lynn Grodzki in helping you in your practice and the excuses given that it couldn't be helpful, that I found hysterical to read.In my 16 years of private practice as a bodyworker, this book has created an even stronger clientele that I have been seeking for. Consistency.Look, as I tell many who start a practice. Just because you open one up, have business cards made and your family know this practice you are just creating doesn't mean anyone will come to you and No book or Person will give you clients, but they sure as heck help you build and it works. The problem that this book might not be well recieved is because of the limitations they not only put on themselves but on others. I loved how this book came about. It works for any profession not just Therapists, but anyone working with clients...If you are seeking for someone to give you clients this isn't for you if you are seeking how to build a practice this is the one for you.

I recommend this book for someone just going into private practice
I recommend this book for someone just going into private practice. It doesn't have all the answers and it is 15 years old. However, Ms. Grodzki has sound advice. I started my private practice knowing next to nothing about marketing practices and it's been an instructive book. The mental health field has changed even more since 2000, the year her book was published. I live in a poor state and being insured is pretty important if you want mental health care. Ms. Grodzki doesn't address the trials and tribulations of dealing with insurance companies. Her focus is on the cash paying client. That being said, it's still an informative, reassuring (for this marketing/business virgin) and positive read.

Wow! Wow! This book could be the bible of private practice!
Wow! Wow! Now this book contains pretty much everything one needs to know on the subject of building a private practice. Lynn Grodzki is an amazing author and coach. To me, she is THE business coach for therapists! The knowledge and ex-pertise in this book is mindboggling. The book doesn’t just focus on the HOW and WHAT to do (what do I need to do next?), but also focuses on the WHO (the person you need to be-come to do this successfully).Lynn lists numerous ideas to build your practice. What is most important is creating a business that embraces YOUR values. The book is truly a must read for anyone interested in the subject of private practice!

I Loved This Book
Lynn Grodzki offers two invaluable things in her book. One, was the ability to get me unstuck and out of my fear-based paralysis about the future of my practice and the future of the business of psychotherapy. She has done this through her unbridled enthusiasm and inspirational message that apparently comes directly from her own business experience. If someone has a very successful practice than I want to know their experience, hope, and strength. Her positive mind-set has helped shake me out of a "victim" and "scarsity" mindset that was polluting my "off" hours,i.e. the hours when I didn't have clients in my practice.Secondly, she offers a ton of practical advice for a clinician like me. How to start thinking like a business person in addition to being a skilled clinician? Her book has gently led me forward, past my resistences, towards thinking much more intelligently and responsibly about the business end of my work.
